West Berkshire Council provides important local services for around 155,000 people across the district. We provide education, housing and social services; we're responsible for roads in the area and we provide rubbish, recycling and other waste services.
As well as these critical services we also make sure there are other local amenities and attractions such as Libraries, leisure centres, a museum and our Grade II listed Shaw House.
Choosing to work for West Berkshire Council gives you the opportunity to work in your community and for your community. It can give you a real sense of achievement and the satisfaction that you're able to make a difference to local people.
Here's what our staff told us in our 2015 Staff Satisfaction Survey:
•Over 70% feel a sense of personal achievement through their work
•There's a great team ethic, with 86% saying that their colleagues co-operate well to get things done
•Over two thirds say they are able to strike a good work-life balance
•Most of our staff tell us they're proud to work for us
In a large, sometimes complex and fast-moving working environment, these are figures we're really proud of, and compare favourably to the best private sector workplaces.
We employ around 1,500 staff across the organisation. Most of these are based in Newbury, at our offices in Market Street or West Street. However, with so many different jobs we also have people who work out in the community, at one of our smaller satellite offices, in libraries or schools or even sharing space with some of our partners in other buildings. If you're interested in applying for a job we'll tell you where it's based in the job description.
