About West Covina Unified

West Covina Unified School District has a goal of reaching 800 API points by the year 2010. Monte Vista's API score is 761. This is a 17 point gain in 2007. Monte Vista is very proud to announce we have the most students in the district scoring in the proficient range on the English Language Arts portion of the California State Test or CST. Students – more... will continue to be tested in grades 2-6 during the spring in language arts and math. Fourth grade students will take a writing proficiency test and fifth grade students will be tested in science as well.

Monte Vista will continue to use the Open Court Reading program in all grades. This research based program focuses on reading, writing, listening and speaking at all grade levels. Grades K-5 will use Houghton Mifflin math while grade six will use McDougal Littell. Our SDC class will use the Saxon math program. We have a new adoption in our social studies this year and we will continue to use an integrated science curriculum focusing on California State Standards.

Extracurricular activities are an intragal part of Monte Vista's culture. Families have been encouraged to sign up for an after school program called ACES run through the YMCA. The program is funded through Proposition 49 and provides after school enrichment for Monte Vista students every day until 6:00 p.m. The program features an extension to the school day. Our site will provide literacy development, arts and music, physical education and homework help. Monte Vista will continue to offer a Drama Club where students will perform live performances for the school and community. We will be broadening our athletic program to incorporate our sixth graders. Students are invited to participate in sports friendly competition during their lunch break. Students gain important sportsmanship skills through organized play. Our library known as The World of Reading will continue to support our students in their academic achievement.

Monte Vista offers a safe school environment. Students participate in our yearly Monte Vista Assembly where students, teachers and staff learn important safety rules for our campus. As a reminder, our school has a closed campus policy. Parents are encouraged to walk or drive their children to school. Please drop your child off outside the gate allowing them to enter the campus on their own. All adults entering the campus must enter through the school's office. Please make appointments through the school's office to visit or schedule a meeting with your child's teacher.

Our teaching staff of 27 teachers and complete staff of 56 encompass dedicated educators who are always working in the best interest of Monte Vista students. Highly qualified teachers are continually given professional development in the areas of differentiated instruction and core curriculum. We are also proud to announce Monte Vista's teacher of the year, Vanessa Martin. Ms. Martin was also chosen as West Covina's Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Massey, our Office Manger, was recently selected as the classified employee of the year. Our congratulations go out to Ms. Martin and Mrs. Massey on these highest honors. These members are just two of the many professionals on our campus who are here to support our students in so many ways. Monte Vista truly is a wonderful place.

Monte Vista encourages active involvement from the parents of our students. Starting in October, a monthly calendar will be sent home informing the community of activities here at Monte Vista. Our PTA will be featuring a Family Fun Night in October and all are encouraged to join PTA this year. The Senior Mentoring program gives students one-on-one tutoring instruction to targeted students. The Republican Women's Club offers added support for students at our site. We welcome these volunteers who tutor our students in need of additional assistance and support the school with resources.

Monte Vista is achieving success through the partnerships vested here on campus. It is with these groups that student needs are addressed. With constant support and communication we strive to meet the needs of all students who step foot on our campus. With our parents, teachers, staff, community and administration Monte Vista students will continue to be successful in all their endeavors. – lessMore from ZoomInfo »
