In our ongoing commitment to provide advanced, high-quality care to our patients, West Suburban Hospital's Cancer Center is proud to offer a new development in radiation therapy called intensity-modulated radiation therapy, or IMRT.
IMRT achieves what was once impossible with other radiation therapies: it precisely targets the cancer while substantially reducing exposure to surrounding healthy tissue. Using specialized software and computers, physicians are able to modulate the radiation into pencil-thin beams, adjust the intensity of each beam, and guide the radiation around sensitive areas. The result is fewer side effects, fewer complications, and improved cancer control rates. With its pinpoint accuracy, IMRT also allows for more safety when dealing with delicate areas, such as the prostate, left breast, and brain.
