State registered Nurse Aide (Former Employee) –  Hopkinsville, KYSeptember 11, 2017
Loved the work, loved the patients. If you can get past typically workplace drama then it's an amazing place to work. Safe, secure, you do work with psych patients so if that isn't something you're interested in it is not a good first job in psych unless you have grit, compassion and the sense to learn from somebody else.

Direct Care Worker (Former Employee) –  Staunton, VASeptember 10, 2017
This is not the place to work if you want to be treated fairly. The management doesn't care unless you happen to be a favorite of theirs. The patients are the only reason to work there. Long hours little pay and no thank you from anyone leads to low morale. Benefits are good if you can watch out for the cut throat mentality. No idea of teamwork
Pros
Benefits, patients
Cons
Long hours poor mgt lack of teamwork

Behavioral Health Intensive Unit Registered Nurse (Former Employee) –  Hopkinsville, KYSeptember 8, 2017
Western State Hospital was a wonderful place to work for but nurse safety was not a priority. If you were hired through the temp services you were paid very well but benefits sucked. If you were hired on through the state the pay sucked and benefits were great

Psychiatric Security Nurse (Current Employee) –  Lakewood, WASeptember 7, 2017
I was nervous and very skeptical to accept a position there, but they have made great progress in the past year. The management is as expected in a large organization but communication is good if you speak with your supervisor and manager. It's very fast paced for LPNs and PSNs during day shift with med passes and many responsibilities.

Lots to learn in this environment if you are willing to take on the challenge.
Pros
Great learning experience in the mental health field.
Cons
Lack of work ethic amoung PSAs and MHTs.

Difficult work environment due to antiquated culture

Very difficult, antiquated culture which impacted patient care and employee morale. As a public hospital, it is micro-managed by the state legislature.

Psychiatric security attendant overiew of job
Psychiatric security attendant (Current Employee) –  Tacoma, WAAugust 15, 2017
A typical day is never knowing where your, actually going to work you get pulled to different wards throughout your shift. then you are to read variouss reports about the different paitents and there behaviors, and what to watch out for. What I have learned is it's not always the patient having a bad day, it's who you work with that shift and who was on shift before you. They are improving on managment right now, but every workplace is a working progress!
The hardest part of the job, is when you don't have the authority to actually help the patient or give advice that they doctors and nurses actually take into consideration... the enjoyable part is that people "patients" actually recover and take their medications and they work effectively and they move on to another facility to another chapter in their lives. What I have learned is that it pays to have an education, and a good head on your shoulders everyone has a part in taking care of these patients and in hopes of them actually recovering! and living a semi- normal life outside the hospital.
Pros
experience and pay and benefits
Cons
the hours of the shifts should change/ and more opportunity to move up in the hosptial

OPX Operator (Former Employee) –  Tacoma, WAAugust 4, 2017
Greek coworkers for the morning or night shift. The typical day at western state is to find out about the status of the clients and who was on security duties. The days activities IE clients moods or any emergency calls to the contact team for Nurses. Who's the Head nurse for the night, who is on call in emergency pharmaceutical issues. Who was the contact for emergency hospital visits. Work place culture was very good close nit team. The hardest part of the job was if a patient is in the last stages of life and the complications of paper work that is needed to have the person moved from Western state to a hospital if the client expires. The most enjoyable aspect of the job was when you see a client or patient complete there cycle with Western state and they have made a recovery and are making the transition to independents with the help of there counselors and their own will and strength.
Pros
team spirit
Cons
Not compensated enough in pay.

Miserable Place
Mental Health Technician (Former Employee) –  Lakewood, WAAugust 3, 2017
Miserable, unsafe place to work. The only way you can advance your career here is if you are related to or in a relationship with someone in management. Serious lack of patient care.

Unsafe

PNA (Current Employee) –  Staunton, VAJuly 27, 2017
the job is a good place to start if your looking into going into psych. the mandates are the only downfall to this job. the hospital itself is a good environment to really learn about how the brain works.
Cons
mandatory overtime

Chief of Safety and Security (Current Employee) –  Lakewood, WAJune 5, 2017
Western is transforming. The management team strives to connect with the staff. The hospital is rapidly advancing in their ability to manage some of the most challenging patients as they move toward recovery.
This is a historic facility with terrific people who work well together.
Pros
Job has meaning, autonomy, opportunity for growth, creates and impact and makes you feel connected.
Cons
Safety is improving but not quite there yet.

Recreation Therapist (Current Employee) –  Lakewood, WAMay 31, 2017
A typical day is full of adventure with support by team members. I have inspired patients and my coworkers, to work through each day and allow them to have a better life. I have learned how to work with many people of different cultures and backgrounds. Management has worked with supervisors, to trickle down information, and make the hospital a safe place, while helping the patients meet their overall recovery. The hardest part is having to work within a limited budget. The most enjoyable part has been to work with great coworkers, and to have helped 100's of patient's work towards their recover over the years.
Pros
Continuing Education days, healthcare, free parking
