Its a job.... That's about it
Security Officer/Shift Leader (Former Employee), St. Louis, MOOctober 10, 2014
Pros: no micomanagement, free uniforms, simple job functions
Cons: horrible upper management, terrible pay, the rules change from day to day
The post I was assigned to was mostly enjoyable. My coworkers were very friendly and my immediate supervisor was nice, but upper level management was horrible. I watched them fire people for no real reason and not even tell them until they arrived for work the next day. They did a horrible job getting shifts covered so we handled getting shifts covered – more... amongst ourselves. There is no real opportunity for advancement unless you know someone in upper management or a company owner. They did nothing to protect the officers in many cases against client abuse and we didn't even make $10 and the "fringe benefits" are not even worth paying for. – less

Security Guard (Former Employee), 1st Ave Way ste 210 Federal Way, WAOctober 1, 2014
Pros: the people and staff and sites
Cons: contract ended too soon
I started learning how to become a security guard at this company with good and informative instructions on how to be a good security officer with training and philosophy about the position. Management was a great help and assistance in carrying out my duties with regular hours and sites.

Sergeant reports for duty!
Supervisor (Current Employee), Saint Charles, MOSeptember 22, 2014
As I report for duty, on a typical day, the Sergeant that I am relieving will fill me in on details that occurred throughout the night. This is why we report for duty 15 minutes before clock in time. I will summarize the other shifts Post activity reports and send a summary to the property manager. Next, I head out on patrol. I try to keep students – more... and contractors from parking in prohibited spots. I will then familiarize myself with the property and anything that has happened that needs to be noted. I will then go into the office and perform computer surveillance. Filling out incident reports is a very common thing that officers do. Having to be very descriptive, and to the point. After my shift I will brief the next supervisor and I will clock out. – less

Allows nepotism, discrimination, and retailation against employees who speak out
Security Officer (Current Employee), Metairie, LASeptember 18, 2014
Pros: hospital employees are nice
Cons: company doesn't care how their site is being run nor do they care about their employees
Worked for this company for the past two years and I have never seen anything like this. Worked at a hospital in Louisiana and the director and captain are mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. The captain also is a aunt and godmother to a employee and all work on the same shift. The major has a cousin working for the company as well and at the same site – more... as the major. Males are allowed to walk off their post and return as if nothing ever happened. When you ask questions regarding certain company policies, your hours get cut. Worked for two years and never once met the area manager who has since been fired for stealing from the company. Certain individuals are allowed to advance while in their 90 days of probation, their is no room for advancement only if you are related to someone, officers are allowed to wreck company vehicles and not be taken for drug testing. A employee had a stroke on the job and it was never reported to the area manager and this employee has been allowed to return to work and this employee can't even walk nor control their bodily functions. Hospitals have codes everyday and if something really bad was to happen, this employee would be a casualty. Maybe one day they will get tired of hiring just warm bodies for their sites and hire reliable employees and start listening to their employees who have valid concerns as to how their site is being run. – less

Good job to have as far as work tasks
security officer (Former Employee), Domtar paper mill, Ashdown, ArSeptember 17, 2014
Pros: great dealing with public
Cons: different rules for some and another set of rules for others.
Work days were routine, If you like dealing with the public this was the job, Most jobs you work alone, unless you work front gate, There was nothing bad about this job. Monitor site, Check vehicles ,identification, visitors, daily logs, answer phones and mill alarm systems. The only down side was; the company rules didn't apply to some and the company – more... rules were only enforced if the Captain didn't like you. It was ran without the eyes on the Captain only eyes on paperwork handed in from captain. The most enjoyable part of the job was the different people that would visit the work site and the regulars that would be there on a daily bases. – less

Security Officer (Former Employee), Compton CaliforniaSeptember 12, 2014
Pros: its a job
Cons: incompetent people in supervision
My experience with Whelan Security of California was good however, there are several problems im going to share. The major problem I had with Whelan Security of California is that they did not have too many accounts in the Southern California area. They are losing a major contract in Torrance with Toyota & I do not see them being successful in Los Angeles – more... County.

My second gripe is the lack of quality people in management. The branch manager in the Los Angeles region is understaffed and the field supervisor does not know the meaning of the term, "professional", as he is a former Navy Officer.

Also, The Nissan LAPDC account & The LISI AERO SPACE ACCOUNTS ARE THE WORST ACCOUNTS TO BE SENT TO WORK FOR.

The Post Commander at the Nissan account in Compton is a woman who barely speaks good English. She is not fit for site supervisor nor to be apart of any kind of supervisory position because she has been late to work between an hour to 4 hours late. Also, when the corporate executives arrive from Japan or from Tennessee, she is either not present or schedules herself to work at night when the VIP'S have left for the day. Lastly, this woman is the sad consequences of affirmative action. She may come off as respectable and professional but when you make a mistake, she is quick to throw you under the bus and have you written up or removed from the account. She has fired hundreds of female guards because she does not want anyone questioning or challenging her authority. Her uniforms are innapropriate as she shows way too much cleavage & flirts with management on a daily basis. DO NOT WORK AT THIS SITE!!!

LISI AEROSPACE is another contract to avoid at all costs. The guy in charge is best friends with the branch manager!!! This man in charge of liso aerospace does not speak good English and the people in charge of lisi aerospace harass security on a daily basis!

The post commander is another victim of affirmative action and he is very rude and likes to raise his voice at you.

Although Whelan Security is a good company outside of California, they are horrible in the Los Angeles region.

I resigned from The Nissan LAPDC site after 3 loyal years of service and they never thought of promoting me or giving me a raise. I was so loyal that I was willing to relocate to the midwest, where the HQ is located, to work for that promotion.

I do not complain about my job unless I feel that management is treating others unfairly or if management is incompetent. – less

Good Job
Area Manager (Former Employee), Wichita, KSAugust 28, 2014
I loved working as a security guard. I handed out visitor passes, verified personnel, walked the perimeter to check the premises. The management was hard to communicate with because they were located in Saint Louis Missouri. We didn't really get to work with other people from our company unless it was shift change. The hardest part of the job was being – more... on call 24 hours a day 7 days a week. – less

A job i loved
Security Officer (Former Employee), Decatur, ILAugust 26, 2014
Pros: working my post
Cons: keeping the system running smoothly
exciting and challenging. I've learned to help the most disgruntled customers. logging in thousands of truckers an a daily basics. Waving a the clients taking their information, clearing visitors and keeping the post running. Management is very supportive and will be there in a flash. My co-workers is the best crew to work with there isn't anything – more... hard about my job I hated to leave but my Father was sick and I had to move back to Texas – less

What a joke
Security Guard (Current Employee), Oklahoma City, OKAugust 22, 2014
Pros: keeps you busy
Cons: health insurance sucks, and the payroll department can't get it right
Health insurance is a joke no primary provider, the management is a joke, they expect you to work to much leaving no time for yourself or family. I wouldn't recommend this company to anyone I know. I am currently looking for a new job away from security. Very high turn over and management doesn't get in any hurry to replace anyone who has quit.

Structured, Organized, Clear Duties, Great Work Place.
Security Officer- Seargent (Former Employee), St. Louis, MOAugust 21, 2014
A typical day at work would include regular patrols, computer monitoring and coordinating with fellow officers. I learned the routine of whatever post I was assigned to. As sergeant, I assigned duty routes to security officers as directed by the Post Captain. I enjoyed working with my co-workers. Together, we made our place of work a great environment. – more... The hardest part of my job was having to secure relief for officer getting off work, due to last minute call-offs. The most enjoyable part of my job was simply the security officers' staff and the staff that worked at the facility in which we were posted. – less

Gives me balance and able to do fire training/safety
Fire Administrator (Current Employee), Canton, MSAugust 21, 2014
Pros: company car
Cons: no holidays off
Typical day is to make sure all the safety and fire protection is in place at Nissan. I meet with facilities to make sure we are in code, I also meet with safety about any safety issue. I mange about 20 Fire Brigade officers and 25 volunteers to be trained and for fire suppressions. The hardest part of my job I am on call 24/7 and covering about six – more... million square feet of building. The most enjoyable part of my job i have meet some many wonderful people. – less

A good security company.
Security officer (Former Employee), St. Louis, MOAugust 4, 2014
Pros: the pros of this company was that they keep you busy.
Cons: the cons of this company is there is too many people trying to stab a person in the back.
A typical day for me was patrolling my assigned assignment. I learned how to be very alert on my assignments. The management at this company was marginal at best.My co workers were very friendly. The hardest part of the job was learning different assignments.
