Beware of Pathology Transcription Per Diem Position
Pathology Transcriptionist, Whittier Pathology Department - July 24, 2015
I had a bizarre interview at Whittier Hospital a couple of months ago for a per diem Pathology Transcription position. On the phone, they told me the position was 1-2 days a week, with the "possibility of more work" if things got busier. They would not tell me what the pay rate was.
When I drove 30 miles to the interview, I was informed that the position was "one day a week, sometimes no days a week", depending on how busy it was. They told me a previous employee had quit because of the unstable schedule; I wonder why?
However, despite one day a week employment (if that), they expected me to be available on that one day when they needed me!
I am a single mother, have to pay a baby sitter when I work, and they expect me to drive 60 miles round trip for one day a week, but to be available at a moments notice when they need me?
I told them I needed fulltime employment and could work with them if they were flexible, but they told me I needed to be available at any time during the week. I told them that wouldn't work for me, and the interview ended shortly thereafter. What irritated me the most was that they could have told me all of this over the phone before I drive 30 miles there and 30 miles back (on top of paying someone to watch my child while I interviewed). They also could have been honest upfront about the hours, instead of saying it was "1-2 days a week, more if we're busy). Please beware of this position. They are not being honest with candidates.
