The Wm. A. Natorp Company is dedicated to providing our customers with the highest quality plants and services. We are proud to produce 200,000 units of annuals, 400,000 units of perennials and shrubs, and 12,000 field and PIP trees annually for our retail and landscape customers. We are searching for an Operations Manager to coordinate and oversee all aspects of production and a staff of 65 employees at our 300 acre nursery located in Mason, Ohio.

Position Summary

The Nursery Operations Manager leads the staff to achieve the company’s vision and other goals by developing and maintaining a positive work culture and overseeing all aspects of plant production.

Key Responsibilities: People, Plants, Facilities, Strategic

People

Creating, encouraging, and sustaining a highly functioning, self-directed management team by building an environment of empowerment and accountability

Providing the staff with training, resources, tools, and support needed for success and professional growth

Communicating and ensuring that individuals and nursery teams understand their responsibilities and performance expectations

Providing feedback and guidance to employees on a regular basis, recognizing individual employees or teams for positive contributions, addressing performance issues as they arise

Introducing and promoting problem solving skills and resources that will help all employees work with the challenges that may arise in the course of their work day or projects

Plants

Coordinating all aspects of crop production processes with the growers, including crop selection, planting, fertilization, disease/pest management, harvesting, and the purchase of hardgoods needed for production

Managing the allocation of employee and material resources required to produce quality plants in an efficient manner

Facilities and Equipment

Working with the production team and the mechanics to see that opportunities and deficiencies are addressed promptly and effectively

Ensuring safety, security and environmental standards are met on a consistent basis

Researching new technologies and evaluating their usefulness to the Nursery

Strategic Initiatives

Participating with the executive team in the annual planning process including budget design, crop selection, production goals, intercompany initiatives and staff development

Seeking out new ways to enhance profitability

Working as a partner with Natorp’s Landscape, Wholesale Supply, Bulk and Retail Divisions to achieve company-wide goals

Required Skills and Abilities

Five years of experience in operations management is required.

In order to work in individual and team settings, and to encourage leadership skills, the ability to communicate effectively is key to success in this position

Strong Delegation/Empowerment Skills are needed to empower and enable individuals and teams

Conceptual and Strategic Thinking is required to consider the whole picture as well as day to day operations

Knowledge of large scale annual, perennial, shrub and tree production preferred

A working knowledge of nursery technical and mechanical skills is preferred
