It was okay. But took me a month after being hired to start

It took a month to get hired. Back ground check, 3 references have to fill out a survey about you, school records and shot records. Blood test, saliva test, and urine sample (not even joking). Typing test may be required.

I think you will find that the bad reviews come from the badly run departments, typically any department that functions in a support role. I've seen a lot of good people quit and "move on" either because they felt unapprecited or because there was no room for advancement in these departments.
