XO Holdings gets down to the Xs and Os of business telecom services. Through its operational subsidiary XO Communications, the holding company provides telecommunications services to large corporations, small and midsized businesses, government agencies, and other telecom carriers over a network of about 1 million miles of metropolitan fiber. XO Communications offers local and long-distance voice, dedicated Internet access, private networking, data transport, and managed services such as Web hosting and bundled voice and data services. The company has more than 90,000 customers, including Covad Communications and SAVVIS. Billionaire financier Carl Icahn owns the company through his ACF Industries Holding Corp.
XO Holdings has made more than $1 billion in revenue every year for the past five years, but it has never been a profitable company. However, it recorded a positive net income for the first time in 2009 -- not for product sales, but after selling about $53 million in marketable securities.
XO Communications has been expanding its international presence to meet the demand for telecom services in Europe and Latin America. In 2010 the company expanded its fiber network an additional 800 miles and added its fourth international gateway to Mexico, the third-largest site for telecom traffic in the US. XO Communications expanded its IP network services in Europe by 30% through an agreement with Ireland-based Hibernia Atlantic. – less
