Great place to work
Advocate (Current Employee) –  Kingston NYJanuary 27, 2016
Over all YAP is a great place to work, only if you are not interested in advancing. And the pay isn't great and they do not give raises.
Pros
flexible schedule
Cons
no advancements and static pay

Parent Advocate (Current Employee) –  Canton, NYJune 20, 2016
This job allows one to have a true client's world view. Your day can be unpredictable which requires flexibility.
I teach parents how to work with their children whom have been diagnosed with specific disorders.
I have learned many of the clients I work with lack basic communication, coping and independent living skills that prevents them from having successful relationships with services. A high percentage of my clients have mental health diagnosis's which requires a strong knowledge of diagnosis and CBT practices as well as strong Crisis Intervention skills.
The most enjoyable part of the job is watching people accomplish their goals.
Pros
Hands on work
Cons
no vacations, no sick time

Mentor at risk youths (Current Employee) –  Fort Worth, TXJuly 10, 2016
Great environment. Ability to learn and grow with youth as positive mentor very rewarding. Helps with learning how to stabilize own life and see what youth needs and what ou have to offer. Helps strengthen weak parts of your own life. You pick up kids from home and take them out to go do things they normally wouldnt get the opportunity to do themselves. Can go to the movies, can go bowling or what ever else you feeel like doing. CO workers are nice and helpful. like to get out and see the changes and opportunities other people can make.
Pros
rewarding
Cons
usually later in the evening

Interpersonal workplace focused on improving client development with flexible hours
Youth Advocate (Current Employee) –  Newark, N.J.March 24, 2015
The Youth Advocate Program allows for a flexible schedule and is great for a second job on the weekends. At YAP, you are expected to mentor and be an advocate for young adults in foster care and in the juvenile detention system. This offers the satisfaction of helping youths who need it the most and influence them onto a better path. Your immediate supervisor serves as a guide for the experience and offers advice and counseling as well as guidance and directives. Co-workers formally assemble once a month during staff meetings where they discuss issues and concerns of their youths and of the program. The most difficult part of the job is establishing positive relationships with not just the youths, but also the parents who may have their own understanding of your position. Although this can also be the most enjoyable aspect if the youth and parents are engaged and compliant with the program.
Pros
Flexible hours
Cons
little benefits

Therapeutic Staff Support (TSS) (Former Employee) –  Chambersburg, PADecember 7, 2015
While employed as a Therapeutic Staff Support for children on the Asperger's and Autism spectrum, I gained so much fulfillment in helping the individual child as well as, a strong support for their families. Every day was a new experience. I was fortunate enough to have a professional, knowledgeable and caring management team that educated, encouraged and perfected my skills. I can't elaborate enough how supporting those who have physical, mental or learning challenges enriches your personal life. The work was demanding, in that, specialized and accurate documentation was vital. Each day was different for I tailored my work schedule according to the schedule of the families' contract with the company. My job entailed, shadowing the individual child while at school, home and community activities while collecting data that was integral for the mental and physical health professionals to monitor and tailor their intervention strategies. Strong bonds were made between the child, their family members and I.
Pros
Challenging yet very rewarding opportunity for working with special needs children.
Cons
Demanding and continually changing work schedule.

Behavioral Health Specialist/Mobile Therapist (Former Employee) –  Frackville, PAAugust 19, 2015
Working environment is in the community, homes and schools with clients and their families. Enjoyed working with school staff, families and clients. Management is not supportive and training is not up to par. Co-workers talk during trainings or are on their phones and management does not care if workers are properly trained. They are not up to ethical par either where clients are concerned.
Pros
working with clients and families
Cons
managment lacks ethics and support

Counselor (Former Employee) –  Atlantic City, NJMay 10, 2015
Meet and greet client and parent. A challenging job as environments not fit for one to live were occasionally the work site One thing I learned is most of our personal challenges leave room for emotional uplift at our place of employment. Self-awareness helps, but placing clients needs before our own can be therapeutic. Non-judgment thinking is what I've acquired
Pros
enjoy counseling children
Cons
some clients needed a to spend a week or two in a housed facility

Therapeutic Staff Support (Former Employee) –  Franklin, PAOctober 16, 2013
Management was awesome and made you feel important. They always remembered Birthday's and gave you some sort of yummie candies on pay-day.. A typical day is the same as above.. Co-workers were good and everyone worked together as a team during monthy meetings in training. The most enjoyable was working with children and making each day brighter for them.. TSS help complete goal and to help them bocome a better person by working with families in the home.. The hardest part of this job was getting your paperwork completed due to a lot of documenting and organization.. The hours were bad and not enough to support yourself.. I love being a TSS and helping children. I am looking for much more stability..
Pros
same as above...
Cons
not enough hours to make a living...

Laid back environment. Learned to cope with at risk youth and their parents in their environment. Management was not very tentive to the needs of the Office Staff.
