We are looking for a Software Specifications / Technical Writer (Clearwater, FL)
TOPS Software, LLC has an immediate opening for a qualified Software Specifications / Technical Writer with 3-5 years' experience. The Writer will create and update detailed functional specifications for our software. The detailed functional specifications include User Interface, Reports, System Process and other specifications. The Writer participates in specification reviews, and may conduct the review with all stakeholders, including, but not limited to, Development, Quality Assurance, Professional Services, Technical Support and Executives.
The Writer will be expected to create, maintain and manage supporting end-user documentation and web-based context sensitive help for TOPS Software's products and services by adhering to established style guides and following industry best practices in technical writing. The Writer will also be required to manage the distributed versions of our documents and provide updates as assigned.
To perform your job responsibilities you will need to be capable of interviewing staff, third party experts as well as prospect and/or clients in our related field of business. The Writer must be able to organize the research and translate into functional specifications. These can then be used as a basis for test scripts, training, support and marketing materials.
> Plan, design, research, write, edit and maintain installation and configuration guides, system administration guides, release notes and instructor and participant training guides.
> Create and update context-sensitive help.
> Develop and adhere to style guides.
> Use standard industry best practices in technical writing.
> Determine the documentation requirements and appropriate strategies needed to effectively convey the information to users by studying engineering or programming specifications and directions, experimenting with the software and interviewing subject matter experts including software engineers.
> Use instructional design techniques to enhance training materials.
> Author and maintain knowledge base content.
> Maintain and manage documents in archives to reflect code and content changes though the lifespan of the documents.
> Develop and maintain installation, configuration, how-to documentation and online help for both customers and employees.
> Manage multiple assignments simultaneously, while working independently and with other employees.
> As an integral part of cross-functional product teams, you must learn the products by hands-on experience.
> Complete writing assignments according to set standards regarding order, clarity, conciseness, style and terminology.
> Review published materials and recommend revisions or changes in scope, format, content, methods of reproduction and binding.
> Assist in laying out, doing final proofs of materials for publication with the marketing and IT departments.
> Strong communication and presentation skills.
> Develop an integrated documentation process for end-user training that could include print, online, and asynchronous training materials. Technical writer will assist in the creation of scripts and or final asynchronous training material.
> Assist in writing marketing material to promote and sell TOPS Software.
> Willingness to learn and dig deeper when faced with an obstacle.
> Work will be performed on-site and within project deadlines.
> Other duties as assigned.
> Outstanding writing, editing and proofreading skills.
> Knowledge of standard industry practices in technical writing.
> Knowledge of information mapping and instructional design.
> Excellent intuition about structuring documentation.
> Ability to learn tools required for content management and publication of documents.
> Capable of preparing charts or graphs in support of document creation.
> Strong verbal communication skills with engineers, product managers, subject matter experts.
> Solid knowledge of the documentation process from design to commercial release.
> Excellent organizational skills.
> Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision.
> Highly motivated individual able to grasp complex custom software applications and learn quickly.
> Must have a demonstrated ability to work within deadlines / Effective time management.
> A sample of prior work must be presented at interview.
> Excellent attention to detail.
> Ability to work successfully in team environment.
> Experience in writing functional specifications for commercial software a plus.
> Software development exposure a plus.
> Familiarity with Madcap Software a plus.
> BS/BA in computer information technology, computer science, engineering or equivalent.
> Must be able to provide samples.
