Today I was offered a position as a contractor with a 3rd party staffing firm to be a project manager for some of at&t's technical projects in the midwest.

I'm filling out background check stuff and am wondering if my DUI from last year will bar me from employment. This is a 100% remote office position and there is no driving required.

Any thoughts?

I had a petty theft charge from almost 7 years ago and was still given the job at AT&T. I think what really plays a role is the amount of time that has passed from your offense. I remember after my background check had passed, the HR manager who was dealing with my hiring asked me if my character still reflects the past and if take responsibility for my actions ...and of course I owned up to it and explained how I grew from it and would never do such a thing again. What I would recommend based on my experience is before your background check is finished but after you've submitted everything, is get into contact with the HR manager and explain how you grew from your mistakes and what you've learned. I think they want to hear that you're mature enough to take responsibility from what you've done .

I know you don't want to hear this, but if I had to bet money I would say that you wouldn't get the position because of recent the offense occurred. Good luck!

Hi, I interviewed for an FTE position (project coordinator/sr. Specialist) at AT&T today. I also have a petty theft charge from a little under 7 years ago. I had just turned 18 when it happened. Could I ask you if you think I should say something before they run the background check? Is your position an FTE or contract position? I'm not sure if it makes a difference. Or now that you are an employee, do you know if petty theft would bar me from being hired? Thank you!
