Long Disappointed with Agencies in Palatine, Illinois

If you want to waste your time and energy to enroll, be tested and sit and wait for a call that is never going to come......go to a recruiting agency.

Your time would be best spent searching job boards and only responding to direct employer listings. Unfortunately, when you post your resume so that it can be reviewed by a potential employer, you get calls from agency recruiters all day long. Leave your answering machine on and ignore recruiting agencies! Some sites allow you to exclude ads from agencies......do it!

When recruiters get your resumes, I think they contact your former employers for leads for themselves. There are many companies out there that we have worked for that have not used agencies in the past, and this is a great source of information for the agencies.

So while you haven't found a new job yet, they are contacting your current employer to let them know they have candidates in the event of a vacancy.

Not sure they really ever try to get YOU a position.

I have worked in staffing agengies for several years and what I am told to do is when someone comes in, get the hiring managers name of all of the places the canidate has worked for and start callint those people for leads. You are absolutely correct.

I have signed up with Adecco, OfficeTeam including sitting down for tests, filling out paperwork including tax forms, direct deposit, etc. and have never even been sent on an interview! I don't know why they make you waste your time if they know they aren't going to help you.

I don't mind speaking with recruiters on the phone for potential jobs but when they start saying to come in and do the whole nine yeards, I get very frustrated.

As I have been told by staffing agencies, they are not obligated to place everyone who walks into their office. They place only the people that have the skills that they can work with and place. If you do not have the skills thier clients are looking for and or skills that make you placeable they will not continue with your application process.

What's even worst they tell you, you have a possible position then they tell you the employer wants to wait and see if they get any others first before they make a decision. That's bull, if they were such good employers then why can't they or do they need to go through a temp service to recruit hard-working people? something is wrong with these employers.

That's very true! It is very frustrating when they are suppose to help place you in a position and don't. Because if they waste your time it looks like they are very busy to there supervisors when in reality they aren't.

I just have to say that some of the comments above seem a bit silly - particularly the people who wail about an agency taking information you provide to find leads for themselves. I don't see anything wrong with that.

Consider... if you are going to an agency to apply for a job, what do you care if they use your information to perhaps find a job for someone else? You don't work there anymore, you probably wouldn't work there again if the agency tried to reinstate you there and there is absolutely no skin off your own nose if they use the information.

Even if you had been called in only for the purpose of the agency fishing for contacts, the effort still might produce results. I can see where your information might find another person in your career field a job and that would open up a position in that career field that you might be able to fill. Perhaps the other person had to drive cross-town while you were driving the opposite way each morning, for example. Now both of you have a shorter commute. It happens.

To me, it is just another method of networking for a job and in the process, more than one person benefits. Besides, I doubt anyone actually goes to apply for a position advertised and gets there unaware it is an agency?? If you are against the whole process, then just don't apply, but there is a good done by agencies. In particular, they are great for finding temporary work while you continue to search for that perfect job.

Lastly, my experience has been that about half the time I've gone on assignments through a temp agency, I manage to either be offered a better job at that company or gain contacts from peers at the assignment who are also looking. It sure beats sitting around writing this sort of stuff for free. :)

This ageny is awful, I've been dealing with someone from ADDECO and everytime I call her it's like starting at square one. She always committs to calling me back with info about a job or interview that I was sent on but never does, stay far far away unless you have nothing better to do than waste your time.

Previous Adecco Recruiter in Bothell, Washington

All of you are right on the money! This place is mismanaged and I walked out mostly due to the work ethics this place allows. I used to like working with agencies as a temp, but after this experience, never will again. Yes, they do indeed use your application for leads! In my region, most of the Adecco staff are inexperienced with recruiting and HR relations. They are in it strictly for the money and don't care what kind of a match the client gets. Don't waste you time going to ANY agency! You are better off working with a REAL recruiter.

I went to Adecco and got a job the very next day. They called me 2 hours after leaving their building, I interviewed the next day, and started working the next. Perhaps you just aren't that qualified or there just wasn't anything available that fit your criteria?

You just go plain LUCKY. Perhaps when this assignment ends, you won't be the next time. It's all in the game.

Hey Mike! Maybe they were desperate at the time they took you!? It's not a question of qualifications! Did you take the tests? You are having an ego trip. If you use a placement to get a job what does that mean about your qualification in the real world? Can't get one without Adecco?

Actually, I do qualify... no ego involved. They required that you type 20 WPM... I type 55.

They ask you be able to multitask and answer phones, which I can do. I passed all of their tests... and the assignment isn't ending. I just got hired on full time, with benefits... paid vacation/dental/health/life insurance.

Just because you had bad luck doesn't mean it is a horrible company. I had great luck with them.

And actually no, you can't get a state job in Kentucky without a college degree... I'm only halfway through getting mine and I needed income to put myself through college. I'm more than qualified and I have an awesome job. They hired like 6 other temps but they were all fired and I was the only one hired. Don't doubt my qualifications.

It has nothing to do with desperation, the policy is just that they -will not- hire you without a college degree unless it's through a temp agency.

I don't get what it is with you people... you don't get the job and you b*tch about it... then when someone -does- get a job, you say I'm either chosen out of desperation or that I'm not capable of getting a job on my own.

Jealousy is such a nasty habit.

I keep hearing people complaining about agencies and I must say it is up to the individual to find options that exclude agencies. I have recruited for placement agencies and have found people very good jobs. And no I am not the exception. The candidates I placed are very happy to be where they are for the most part.

The key to success when using agencies is

1 Don’t completely rely on agencies but make it part of your overall game plane.
2 Do not go for an interview with an agency unless they can tell you very specific information about the position they have that they are considering you for and what they pay. A lot of agencies will ask you to come in and fill out paperwork without a position in mind so qualify the opportunity. It is perfectly fine say you are extremely busy and will only setup interviews with agencies after they give you some idea what you are interviewing for. DO not expect them to give you the company name because normally they will not.
3 When you interview make sure you are specific on what your needs are and stand firm.
4 When possible try to get with a recruiter who has worked a reasonable amount of time for the company. (More then 1 year)
5 Understand that staffing companies work for the employer and not YOU. It is the employer who normally pays the bill and if something good comes from working with an agency it will in all likelihood be free to you. (If not DO NOT WORK with them)
6 Remember agencies have the pay bills and employees as well so be prepared for some pressure from the agency to take a position if they feel it is a fit. Just be firm if you feel it is not a fit for you.

Hope this helps and good luck to all!!!

We should all do a combination of searches. Agencies, online and contact prospective employees on our own. Agencies, call you to come in, you do lengthy interviews, lots and lots of tests, then they tell you "we have nothing right now" What is the point. We go in there hoping to get placed. Still, lots of them are doing a good job. Congrats to the agencies who are really working to place people.

This applies for temporary work not just finding a full time position. They normally have $9.00/hour positions for 1-2 days -- not much more, if that.

I worked with an excellent recruiter int he Chicago Market. She actually found me and 2 of my co-workers great positions. I think most services could careless about you but I really had good luck with her. She was very professional and very pleasant to work with and she didnt set me up like so many other service do!

Her name is Jeanna

Maybe if you send your resume and tell her what kind of work you are looking for she can assist you.

Well, good luck

I have dealt with multiple staffing services with hopes of landing a professional, full time job with career potential. These organizations accomplish very little and are really the biggest waste of time. I don't think they have good jobs or contacts, but, the rub is, they will never tell you the reality of the situation. Perhaps it is a quota thing. Maybe they need to appear like they are bringing enough prospects through the door. It is a bit dishonest.
