AKS is ridiculous

So indeed keeps deleting your account but allows your posts to stay up? yeah that makes some sense... and if that was true- were you not smart enough to stop using J5?

So professor Smack- I never considered Carolyn as a poster on this site - but it makes a lot of sense - especially when you hear Richard's mantra spouted back word for idiotic word and given how much sense J5's explanation made.

Also, good call on the Haiti board... I mentioned it last night to my S.O. when I saw a commercial and she said the same thing as you- that Sean Penn was probably smart enough to take the money and do what he wants to do with it. I will give Richard kudos for donating money, but lets be honest- it is not cause he cares-it is to spread his gospel.

Another thing-- before the last 4 or 5 replies there were 360 replies - now there are less - anyone know what was deleted? I will kepp posting if for no other reason than to have Richard, Carolyn and the think tank continue to waste time strategizing on this site- the more tme they do that the less timethey have to mess with people and when it comes down to it- thats what upsets me most about these people - they mess with your life- and as an ex- AKSer I say that with experience.

I agree with you, AKS is Ridiculous, I'll keep posting if it will keep them busy rather than messing with their employees lives. Who is Carolyn? I don't remember meeting her, the only two women I met, one was fresh out of college all bright eyed and naive and the other one was an ex-waitress (not that there is anything wrong with that). The reason why I know this is because I asked them what their background was, if they had any prior experience in the industry, guess that was a dumb question.... Hang in there, don't make yourselves victims, I just think of the whole thing as a learning experience, I didn't think it was real, because the interview, people, office environment was just so bizarre.

"J5" (Carolyn or DJ?), Whoever you are, you work at Alaska Structures. In August, you wrote: "I work at AKS." that is a direct quote. We all know that only a long-term member of the "family" would get frothing at the mouth mad at the critical comments here. Claiming that you only worked there "a few months" and then getting so worked up over our comments makes no sense.

You also exhibit a key characteristic of AKS employees, which comes from one of Richard's pathological habits. The idea that if you repeat something enough times it will be true. Stuff like:
"We're smackin"
"We've got a team of champions here"
"We're saving lives"
"It's all about the love"
"Richard is a business genius"
"Anybody who doesn't accept Richard's genius has buttons/a glass ceiling/victim mentality"
None of it is true, but gets repeated around the office in mind-numbing fashion until Richard and crew can believe that it is true.

The same goes for calling people "whiney losers" maybe if J5 (CB or DJ?) repeats it enough he/she can believe it.

A few months ago, Jackson Five wrote: "The ego armor of big daddy and his minions has a crack." How do you go from that to saying that AKS really wants people to make negative comments here?

In the last six months you've gone from Everett, to Buford, GA, to Delray Beach, FL, to Stone Mountain, GA, back to Delray. Is all that bouncing around what's making you flip-flop?

It might be stupid of me to think a reasonable, clear-thinking person would use the same name with different locations to fool us, but I don't think you are a reasonable clear-thinking person, and I don't put such a lame attempt to fool us past the limited brainpower you demonstrate.

AKS isn't removing your posts, although nobody here is doing more here to discredit AKS than you are. Your posts get removed because they amount to trolling, but they end up being a perfect illustration of the mentality and intelligence level of the "leadership" at AKS. Good job!!!

AKS is ridiculous

Hey J5-

Why don't you answer any of the questions posed to you? why are you on this site? what is your reasoning for bashing (again and again) the people on this site- if you came to this site to complain as you claim then arent you a whiney loser too? Why are you here?

Also as I asked before- please give us some concrete examples of why telling the truth about strange interview tactics or the working environemt is whining. Can you provide us with any solid examples of working for AKS that are positive to show we are whining?

Until you can answer any of these questions everythign you say is moot.

Your statement "Since you won't stop until all the bull is laid out lets hear it. Lay it out." shows a slip- what you are really asking us to do is stop - since in yor opinion nothing we say matters anyway why would you care if we laid it all out - you just want us to stop cause you know the "any press is good press" adage is not longer true.

i wish I could lay it all out- I really do... But I will state once again- I know another ex-AKSer who quit their role and received unemployment- think about that- Unemployment has some strict requirements- but when the state was told about the abusiveness of AKS they granted unemployment because rights had been violated.

Also one possibility for the others out there... I think the first J5 post may have been a real "non-AKSer" and that the VP of sales who really isnt qualified to be a pizza delivery driver much less a VP( i heard her ask out loud what 10% of a small round number was) used that name in an attempt to make herself seem real- which she isn't in any sense of the word.

Seriously - the VP of Sales could not figure 10% of a number less then 100 in her head... I guess she must have some other qualifications that only Richard can see....

Hmm. I'm trying to do some research on this company after getting a call about a job and I'm not really able to find much about the exact salary or detailed job descriptions anywhere. I'm also allergic to dogs and being in a office with several dogs is quite bad for my health, even after taking my meds. I currently work in a dog free environment and am just trying to see the benefit of a position where I can't get a straight answer to salary and job requirements... not to mention the dogs.

If dogs are bad for your health I don't know why you would even consider working there in the first place. From reading this blog it seems they don't have job descriptions because everything is sales, they called me too. Seems not worth all the hassle.

Definitely avoid even sending your resume if you see a job posting with Alaska Structures. I was called in for a panel interview, and hardly anyone introduced themselves, several kept walking in and out. They were very arrogant and told me I was wrong when I tried to correct them. The interviewers kept referring to their bosses as "the leadership", sounded very cult-ish.

They said they have a "gym" in the office, all I saw was fitness equipment blocking the aisles.

I found the entire experience humiliating; having other candidates present at your interview is not very professional, where is the confidentiality?

Someone should surreptitiously record their interview and post it on YouTube, or better yet, forward it to the Department of Labor or DOJ.

Don't know where to start about these douchebags at AKS.

I get a call shortly after responding to a Craigslist ad. The guy on the phone asks me if I can come in early the following day yet he doesn't know if the front door to the building is unlocked that early. He tells me to bring six copies of my resume, something I haven't had to do in almost a decade (most people have printers at the office to print as many copies of my Word file as they like). I get no email with a confirmation or directions to the office, a courtesy most employers have extended to me.

When I show up early the next day, as I expected the front door to the building is locked. I call AKS and the receptionist, a young overweight girl who seems lost, comes down to let me in.

Just like all cases, it's a panel interview that includes other candidates for the job. During the interview I point out that some of the questions have no valid answers because they were factually wrong, but I'm interrupted and told I AM wrong. Throughout the entire interview, the fat girl from the front desk keeps flashing a dry-erase marker board through the conference room glass door with messages for the AKS panel, as if they have more important things than me, after taking the time to drive to their office for a scheduled appointment.

The day after the interview I notice the same job has been reposted on Craigslist, so I think I'm probably out of the running. But then I search AKS on Craigslist and see that position had been reposted every 2-3 days for the past month!

I have some questions for J5. I am curious to here how she would explain these disturbing comments made by Richard the CEO.

1. Why does Richard say something like "I am the most loved person in the history of the world", when at the big expensive birthday parties threw for him (I assume by his followers on the company dime) the only people present were paid employees and dependent family? ( employees were told to bring family members but that doesn't count and there was I think one college classmate) Doesn't that seem like a big delusional disconnect between Richard's self image and reality? Is he aware that he is faking himself big time? And does he think he's more loved than Jesus?

2. After he gave a talk about sacrificing time with friends to work an applicant asked if he didn't think it was important to spend time with friends. Richard said something like he wasn't meant to have friends, and that he preferred or was "meant to have" DISCIPLES. (I'm NOT kidding.) Wouldn't that indicate him having a messiah complex? Does he think of himself as a messiah?

3. Is all this disconnect from reality by Richard why the employees also seem like they are not living in reality? Is the real reason that turnover is so high that you have to be willing to accept Richard Christ as your lord and your savior? If so, wouldn't it just be easier to ask applicants that question and save a lot of time?

1. deep down behind the puffy chest and mind f-ing he is a sad man with very few friends not on his payroll but he is too proud to ever admit this.

2. yes - he doesn't think is a the messiah, he thinks he is on a mission from the messiah which makes everything he does justified in his head. Richard's actions all revolve around him getting himself into heaven.

3. yes - you can work there and not accept him as your daddy but you won't have a long term career there. He honestly believes that jesus christ himself spent 2 weeks in his house in alaska...need I say more about anything? the scary thing is one person who works for him actually beleives this story!! the others don't but they humor him.

I'm a video production specialist. I got voice mail from "Leslie Quezada" yesterday saying she was from RWH Foundation and they needed a "cinematographer" for an upcoming gig. I called her back to get more information... sounded like some volunteer organization that goes to 3rd world countries handing out blankets and supposedly wanted someone to document it. Seemed strange, because I don't recall ever applying for anything like this. I asked her about it and her answer made me think that maybe at some point I had applied for some vague general "video production" position that they used to lure people. That was the first red flag. I asked if she could e-mail me more information so that I could look it over, but she kind of tried to avoid that... saying they prefer to meet in person. I insisted she send me more information. There's several reasons for this:

#1 - I'm a staunch atheist. I wanted to make sure this wasn't some whackadoo Christian organization with values I didn't agree with.
#2 - I don't work for free. She insisted they pay, but wasn't clear on what they pay.
#3 - I have no recollection of the job posting. I don't want to waste my time or a companies time... if I'm not qualified for a position I don't want to bother going in.

This was Thursday. She asked if I'd be available at 7:00am Friday. I said I was too busy so we tentatively scheduled the interview for 7:00am Saturday, but tried to get off the phone as quickly as possible so she would be forced to send me information via e-mail. This is common practice for me. Even if I have pen/paper in hand, I still ask for information to be e-mailed so I have a chance to look into the company. I ended the conversation without getting an address. (cont)

(cont)...
Then today (Friday) she called me again... I again insisted that they send me some more information and said I was in the middle of something (couldn't write down the address). Finally, I get an e-mail. No information. Just an address and an expected 7:00am meeting for Saturday morning.

That alone is strange. 7:00am on a Saturday? No link to the website? No detailed description of the position?

Kinda annoyed at this point, I do a little googling and find this thread. Don't know or care how much of it is true... it sounds like a waste of time. Cult or not a cult, I was turned off by it enough that I have to pass on the interview. Briefly considered showing up with a hidden camera just to mess with them and post it on youtube, but I'd rather just sleep in.

Sent an e-mail response to Leslie politely declining the interview and thanked her for her time.

Good luck with this nonsense, folks.

I was called in for the Graphic Artist / 3D Artist opening and was put through the same drill as everyone else here. Locked front door to building, long wait at the office front desk, arrogant attitude, but most inexplicable they never asked to see my portfolio which I'd brought with me. These people probably wouldn't spend the long hours they claimed if they stopped wasting their time (and ours too) with these mock interviews.

Audience of One in Bothell, Washington

Anybody who is interested in what the culture is like at AKS should watch the documentary Audience of One. It will give you a perfect idea of what its like at AKS. For an idea on how shockingly similar it is, the movie is about an ineffective blowhard preacher named Richard who thinks he talks to Jesus and is trying to make a movie bigger than Star Wars with a congregation of clueless and unquestioning people with glazed over expressions. The film was made about five years ago and it doesn't seem like he's any closer to getting that movie done. In the documentary, the preacher Richard says that he can look out into his congregation of yokels and see future leaders and CEO's, and that they are going to put out 40 feature movies, start an airline, start eight TV channels, a couple dozen resorts, and colonize another planet. The congregation sits there with goofy smiles on their faces just like they do at AKS when Richard talks about how great he is or when he makes preposterous goals that never get achieved. To be fair to the Richard in Audience of One he doesn't need to pay his congregation to have them smile and nod their heads at his crazy claims, and he isn't making a movie that is meant to shamelessly glorify himself. He might at least understand where the bible says
"Charity suffereth long and is kind, charity envieth not, charity valueth not itself and is not puffed up".
Or the saying "Charity which hastens to proclaim it's good deeds ceases to be charity and is only pride and ostentation."
At AKS you pretty much need to keep nodding your head and have a smile on you face that would get you barred from being within 1000 feet of any school or playground. I'm curious when the AKS Richard intends to finish his movie that is suppose to change the world of charity and help poor people all over the world. James Cameron made Avatar in about four years and even created new film technologies which earn him even more money. Whats taking Richard so long to finish his?

Not anything close to AKS except some of the description you wrote. There is no religious preaching to employees at AKS, I think Richard knows that may cause a lawsuit. Also they are making a documentary and that movie you mention has props and characters but similar in that someone who knows nothing of movies is trying to make the self proclaimed "best" movie ever made and change the world as we know it.

First off - I don't give 2 crackers what you think, I'm not pandering for your vain approval.

I don't recall a time I was ever "preached" to. Do you know what the word "preaching" means. Mentioning Jesus in a conversation or using religion in a conversation is not preaching. Did you even watch the Audience of One clip? I'm not saying Richard doesn't preach because he does preach but it never happened in the Kirkland office when I worked there.

you specifically said "There is no religious preaching to employees at AKS" but then one response later you say you never said that?? Wow- awesome debate skills. Mentioning Jesus may not be preaching telling someone they need to follow the teachings of Jesus to improve is preaching.. being told to follow a religious figure is preaching...

"I'm not saying Richard doesn't preach because he does preach but it never happened in the Kirkland office when I worked there." What are you even saying???

If you dont care what i think - why answer me specifically?

"I'm not saying Richard doesn't preach because he does preach but it never happened in the Kirkland office when I worked there." = he doesn't preach at work.

He tries to preach on the weekends at churches but he usually gets kicked out.

I worked there a while ago (6+ years ago) so if you were there more recently maybe he started preaching to his employees but I doubt it.

Just cause you didn't witness something doesnt mean it doesn't happen. I don't see trees fall - but I know they do. I (and a few co-workers) were specifically preached to...

I was there about 8+ years ago... so it is possible he stopped after it went on record that he does discuss religion at work..

I think I am done on this site for a while... I was coming on to help keep people away from the crazies but somehow got dragged into a lame online argument about someone and someplace we are all better off forgetting existed...

Sorry if this site got off topic- it should be for how horrible the AKS work environment is - not squabbling over what part of Richard's crazy personality we witnessed...

AKS is ridiculous said -

"Seriously - the VP of Sales could not figure 10% of a number less then 100 in her head... I guess she must have some other qualifications that only Richard can see...."

Maybe she overcomes her business uselessness because she lets Dick get inside her head and dutifully swallows loads of his nonsense always with a stepford smile and a "thank you Richard for the training". Maybe that gets her a pass for (if what many people on this forum have suggested is true)the sales team being in the red year after year.
What other place of business can you find where a secretary is more likely to be fired for a mixed up sandwich order then the VP of sales fired for the company losing a ton of money (maybe millions?) every year? What can any potential employee expect entering that kind of work environment? I think thats why discussing Richard's crazy statements is pertinent to the whole point of this forum. Especially since your value to the company is determined by how willing you are to believe him way more than any kind of actual business ability.
Why is it that in the interview they say that their mission statement is "Sell tents" which is blunt and direct, but then when you ask then what the sales were or if they are increasing sales or losing money its all the sudden too complicated to explain and they get all evasive? Doesn't that make the whole "Sell tents" mission statement bogus if it isn't backed up with straight forward results?

And Richard really should have someone in the IT department figure out which of his little disciples is logging onto this forum at work and dissing him. It would be funny if J5 was one of the inner circle. Richard seems like the kind of guy who is afraid of the truth though, especially when it contradicts his belief so he'll probably find an excuse not to do that.

Hi Everyone,

I wasn't going to come onto the site for a while- but I ran into another ex-AKSer who is doing very well right now and I just wanted to pass on one thing I hve learned from most ex-AKS employees.... After spending time at AKS people are usually so happy to be back in a healhty work environment that they seem to flourish quickly.

Everyone I know who has left AKS has had very positive career growth, not by doing what Richard said/taught/preached but by treating people, work/home life the exact opposite of what Richard "teaches". So in a way time spent at AKS can be viewed as a positive. You learn how not to treat people, how not to live your life and how to overlook the petty negatives that come with any role and how to be thankful at a position/career where your contribution is acknowledged and accepted.

So for those current AKS employees who want to leave but are scared about what might be...I say the unknown may be scary - but not half as scary as staying at AKS until it is really too late.

Thanks-

The reason Richard wants people to view this site is so AKS shows up high in the google rankings. Stop helping me. Richard believes he is on a mission from God. He believes that God knocked on his door and told him to treat people the way he does to test them. He believes nothing can stand in his way because God is protecting him.

I'm supposed to do a panel interview with AKS soon... After reading all this, I'm honestly debating on going. Is it just gonna be a waist of my time? I'm applying for the Desktop Support/Help Desk Technician (in Kirkland). BTW, does anyone know the salary range for that position?
Thanks,
xxx

haha just so you know they have gone through about 6 of those positions in the past year. Here is a quote from the CEO, "I have about 90% attrition in the first year, and I want that to go up." He truly does not want you to succeed. He has built a business on those who thrive on negative reinforcement. If you are that type of person, you will do well! FYI, they will not tell you the salary. Three or four employees will conduct the interview, and you will be in a room with 3, or so, applicants. They will play you off of each other, in a competitive manner. They conducted over 600 interviews last year (an hour per interview) to fill roughly 20+ spots, according to the CEO. Now if you think about that in a time management fashion, like most CEO's would, with 4 employees conducting the interviews, that is 2400 hours of wasted staff time... The CEO has chosen to literally waste a year of staff time conducting interviews and his goal is that you don't make it... haha its so bizarre you may think I'm making it up... haha just wait! I'm a business executive and I can't imagine that type of leadership. If you do go, find a way to film up haha OH and also know you will be watched, via camera, every step of the way haha... have fun!

There was NO mention of what the salary range was. I was also told that the range of 'Dictatorship Attitude' of the Alaska Branch Manager on a range of 1 to 15 is a 15!!!! The atmosphere in the office is COLD. I was interested UNTIL I interviewed. So, I retracted my resume.

Richard in Seattle, Washington said: Hmm. I'm trying to do some research on this company after getting a call about a job and I'm not really able to find much about the exact salary or detailed job descriptions anywhere. I'm also allergic to dogs and being in a office with several dogs is quite bad for my health , even after taking my meds. I currently work in a dog free environment and am just trying to see the benefit of a position where I can't get a straight answer to salary and job requirements... not to mention the dogs.

I just went on an interview Friday with AKS. AFTER she put the dog on the treadmill, we were double teamed in an interview. There was NO mention of the Salary Range or Benefits. I was told that the AK Branch Manager 'Dictatorship Attitude on a range of 1-15 is 15.' NO THANK YOU!

Decided to do some research on Alaska Structures after an unpleasant experience meeting the people there. Looks like they have filed 3 lawsuits against former employees in just the last 2 years for various reasons. That is just from looking up records in WA, and not any other states. That seems worrisome for anyone who is thinking of working there. Those lawsuits might be understandable for a big company like Microsoft, but for a small office with around 25 people or less, it seems like pretty bad odds. It suggests a vindictive and entitled attitude, and after meeting the CEO Richard Hotes, it makes sense because he is easily the most insecure and self-delusional person I have ever met. And the VP of Sales Carolyn is disturbingly servile and is constantly reinforcing the absurd delusions of Richard Hotes as some kind of remarkable person. Is that the kind of person they are looking for? And are they married? There's nothing wrong with that, but you'd think they would be up front about it if that is the case.

On another note, someone previously asked if the CEO Richard Hotes thinks he is Jesus, or a messiah. A former employee posted about a saying "WWRD" (not WWJD) which employees were supposed to keep in mind. Maybe it was a joke, but judging by the unquestioning faith shown by the VP, I would guess that it was meant entirely serious, and that if you work there you are not to ask what Jesus would do but instead ask what Richard would do. That is what you would expect from a cult. Some shady character claiming to be a prophet and a genius who can lead you to material and spiritual fulfillment if you give him your complete obedience. Although technically, maybe its not fair to call AKS a cult since in a cult followers normally pay for the privilege of being in the presence of a charismatic and persuasive leader. Since Richard Hotes is neither charismatic or persuasive, his followers are limited to paid employees.

I was recently contacted by AKS regarding an "Administrative Assistant/Sales Support" position. Does anyone here have an idea of salary and benefits for that position? I am not sure it's what I am looking for, but I need to find work. Thoughts? Thank you! :)

I interviewed there a little over a year ago. I'm actually kind of disappointed, it was only slightly odd. It was at 6am of course, me and one other guy being asked questions like what does a SIM card do and what does an intake manifold do on an engine? Not really sure what either of those questions has to do with any job there but i've had odd interview questions before. Two of the guys were on laptops the whole time, while one girl came in, sat down, then walked right back out w/o saying a word. A bald gentleman joined the interview after a while and talked about how people there are crazy about their jobs, come in at 4 am and work till 4pm and work on Saturdays as well. I knew right then and there I wouldn't work there but I got a job offer with a different company so it didn't matter. I wish I had gone in for a 2nd "interview" though. I'm sure it would have been interesting.

1. You should research the Manson family.
2. Do you think you insult a person for selling Amway? Is that a bad thing?

You should always insult somebody who sells Amway, IMO.

Greg - I was called invited to interview also for the Director of Administration opening, which was bizarre because I hadn't even applied. I had previously interviewed for another director role and I told the recruiter that if this is some unimportant group romper room interview, without any information provided - I wasn't interested... the recruiters response, "Um well we aren't interviewing anyone we have already interviewed!" My response, "Well you called me!" LOL... They truthfully have no idea what they are doing! They gouge the government for money - Kirkland's version of Halliburton - which is why they have money to blow!

I was called this afternoon to go in tomorrow morning at 9AM for a group interview for the admin position, but after reading these comments I am not going to show up. Some of the comments make this place sound like a cult or some kind of psychological military interrogation technique. I'm sorry, it just doesn't sound right. I was given the address, told to bring copies of my resume, not given the name of the company but figured it out because the lady who called me had the name of the company in her email address. It's a waste of gas and time, no thank you, and thanks so much for all the people who posted comments here.

Thanks to Jeff and Suzanne and few others for your thoughts on the Admin position - I got a message today. They only said they found my resume on the internet and wondered if I'd be interested in an Administrative Director position. Never heard of this company but I am registered on a few job sites. I haven't been in mfg in over 10 years, so I was a bit surprised when I found their website. I was tempted to ask for the job description as their website was impressive. Also found a brief:

Administrative Director

Alaska Structures, Inc. is looking for an experienced, high-energy Administrative Director that will support its Kirkland, WAoffice.

Qualified Applicant Minimum Requirements:
· Bachelor’s Degree
· 7 Years experience in a corporate administrative environment
· 5 Years experience in personnel management
· The Administrative Director must be interested in learning and developing business skills at the highest level.

I'm already working on a doctorate and have far more experience than this. Now being forwarned, I will proceed with extreme caution. I will absolutely never work long hours as a 'salaried employee' ever again - already tried being a believer for a charismatic boss who actually did write several brilliant books - but once bitten, twice shy. NEVER again. My life comes before my job. Thanks to you all!

You dodged a bullet today. Worst company atmosphere on the planet. They can not hire americans, so the bus them in from Mexico to work in the slave camp in Las Cruces NM as cheap labor.

Most of the people on this site apparently cannot take rejection. The interview process is not the best because they have three people doing the interview, but they are not all present throughout the whole process. They do try and keep their identities to themselves and people in the office choose not to give their names out. I was not selected for the administrative position, but I have no ill will toward the company and just wanted to let people know what to expect. They will try and have 6 people at the same time to interview and there will be 3 interviewers. If you arrive for the 6am interview, not all the interviewers show up on time, so this does not reflect a very good process since only the person on time gives their view about you. They try and see how close your mentality is toward a dictatorship, and, the closer you are, the better your chances. If you just got out of the military, this may be a viable option since you are used to this type of environment. The person complaining about the dog exaggerated. I am allergic to dogs and thought these dogs may have been some type of police or guard dogs. The dogs belonged to someone there and they just wanted to see who you where (wagging their tale and all). The CEO Richard Hotes was one of the individuals at the interview and was also one of the ones that were late. He specified that he does not really care about the product, but rather, that it is all about the bottom line. Now, before you complain, just remember that your bottom line is the pay that they provide you. So, do not be hypocritical and bad mouth a company because they like great revenue, just like you want a great paycheck. The job listing for the position did not go into specific job requirements and said nothing about the position, and so, I asked about it. The CEO said something to the effect that “You should already know what your job is, since you applied for it, and I should not have to tell you what it is.” However, when he mentioned that
