Get as much as you can when you sign on at Amazon.com because it is very hard to get good raises or bonus after you are in. If you are offered a job, work very hard at the negotiation of your salary and bonus, it will be the last time you will have the power in your court. A great raise at Amazon is about 3%- 5% of your current salary. Travel depends on your job. Many people traveled a lot while other did none. Benefits are par with the industry, not great, but not bad. I personally didn't care of the health care, but that was a personal issue.

I worked at the Fulfilment Center so I don't know about their corporate office in Seattle. The base salary for Area Manager starts around $64,000 and can be negotiated upwards to $70,000 if you have the right skillset and education background (MBA). You recruiter will push hard for you to accept $64K because (in their words) "you are getting a complete package consisting of base pay, benefits, 401K, and stock options." Still negotiate upwards as much as you can. One good strategy is to ask for $74K upfront and then work backwards to $70K. That way recruiters feel like you are meeting them half-way. By the way, Ops Managers start at low $70K through $85K.

In terms of bonuses, Amazon gives a sign-on bonus ($10K) when you first join, then another $10K upon completion of your 12-months. The stipulation is that you have to repay the 2nd bonus if you quit after your first year. I have heard of managers who quit and STILL did not repay either bonus, effectively netting a base pay of $64K + $10K (1st month) + $10K (12th month) = $84K salary for working for 1 year. Good income.

In terms of culture, here is what I observed for 2 years. As a company, Amazon has a lot of potential. They are very innovative (thru Kaizens) and results-driven, which means they are profitable. However, as a Manager or Associate working at the FC, you will be truly miserable. That's a known fact of life. Their culture is cutthroat to the point of "dog eating dog." Backstabbing is a fact of life. You are given daily "feedback" by your Ops where it seems nothing is good enough. Little fun fact, out of 25 managers in our building: 2 quit, 2 were fired, 3 transferred, and 1 is in the process of quitting. Low morale is a big issue in Amazon.
