What do you think -- is this company going to survive and thrive? Are they looking to expand their staff, or do you think layoffs are inevitable?

How does Autodesk stack up against the competition?

Layoffs are coming but necessary - especially at the management level and in product marketing. Its bloated and there isn't much productivity. Just a lot of meetings.

As a former employee and a current shareholder, I just hope they give it a lot of thought. There are a lot of very good people but for some reason, Autodesk tends to whack the good ones. I wish I had more faith that this time would be different.

ADSK announced a 10% RIF in January 2009.

ADSK has survived other economic downturns, there is no reason to suspect they won't survive this one. Typically, ADSK customers have the time available to upgrade software during economic slow times hence downturns like this (while difficult) haven't been fatal in the past.

To help individuals affected by the economic downturn, Autodesk has announced a program to provide a FREE license for the educational version of: AutoCAD, Revit Architecture, Autodesk Inventor and/or AutoCAD Civil 3D. FREE on-demand training is available online for those with internet access.

This program is also available to former employees (such as myself).
