I used to live in Charlotte. I moved to knoxville, TN. I have the qualifications/credentials. Went to interviews, etc, blah, blah, blah. But each hob had 700 applicants, 400 applicants, etc. I couldn't oompete!(Nor did I want to). Foregt the temsp, they are a joke (except, Possibly Snelling Staffing). I prob sent out 500 resumes. Had 15 interviews, 1 job until my husband got transferred. I was soooo glad to get out of of Charlotte. Good Luck!!!! It's a joke out there!

Allstate in Roanoke is hiring. I had a friend who worked there. The turnover is incredible!! Only good thing: day-1 health insurance. But, I am also aware that moving is a pain and not possible at this time.

You are not alone. I echo the other comments. I am more than qualified. There is so much noise, chatter, false postings now; I would say it's impossible. Only by dumb luck to land a job. Forget about applying out-of-state unless you are in the $150K plus class, or in sales/marketing. As soon as they see your address, it's into the round-file. I was recrutied by an out-of-state company for three months. When I reported to work (after about $20K in Company and my costs (to be reimbursed); I was FIRED after about 30 minutes - by a guy with no credentials whom they hired at the same time!!! Neither HR nor the V.P who hired me would even discuss the situation. I'm going to work as an undocumented day laborer: all cash, paid daily. Being 6' tall and white as Canadian snow...do ya think I have a chance?

"White as Canadian Snow", I like that!! I hate to this, but in the USA, the red-blooded Americans are the Minority! They want 21 year-olds out of school who will work for nothing. I am 33 and will work for less than I feel I deserve, as a lot of people will. It's the CEOs that do nothing and get everything!!!!!

You are in my prayers!

All of you people on this board are a bunch of whiners!! How myopic and un-appreciative can you be? Try working for a living in a third world country.

Up your education level, your skill-sets, and your attitudes and identify exactyl what you want and go after it!!

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

Keep crying and keep spewing garbage about whites being the new minority, etc.

Bone up on your knowledge of global economics and compare yourself honestly to the type of worker our economy needs today.

Are you willing to relocate to find work? Do you have the skills firms are looking for? have you checked to see where the job growth is or will be and have you trained yourself for that career?

Keep checking the want ads..and all you will find are jobs that can't get filled anywhere else BUT the classified ads.

Everyone's blood is actually blue, until it comes into contact with oxygen. No wonder why you guess don't have jobs, that Chemistry 101!

In other news...Companies want to hire the best and brightest workers they can find to work for the lowest wages (duh!). That's kinda how the business world works. Last I heard, having a low unemployment percentage (2%) is a good thing for the job seeker, not the other way around! If there are less qualified people without jobs, than you should have a better chance of getting one. Someone above mentioned skill sets which is true, you must have the one's employers are looking for. However, the job will always go to the potential employee who will do it for less. I don't know how "Un-American" BoA is, but it sounds to me like they are doing what any business would/should, making the bottom line BIGGER! "Filler-Employees" (ones who work in the bank branches as tellers and such) usually don't have that many desired skills because they job is repetitive. Anybody can do it! Therefore, turnover is oftentimes higher and pay is oftentimes lower for the not-so-coveted positions. BoA will do what they have to do to find and hire managers who can supervise these people, so that is where they will put there time and effort into.

The whole illegal-immigrant credit card thing sounds pretty dumb too! Not that they're doing it, that's smart! But the fact that you all are complaining about it! Oh my gosh, there's an extremely LARGE population out there that doesn't have access to credit, let's NOT service them! Come on, gimme a break! If our government is going to be so non-chalent about illegal immigrants living and working in this country, than it is a companies right to go ahead and provide these people a service. Believe me, it's not like they are crossing the border for a friggin BoA credit card!

To the guy in Norwalk...I am applying in the Cleveland area and Columbus. I hear things are much better in Cincinatti, Columbus. Cleveland is getting hit with all of us in Akron who can't find work. It's a mess out there and I hear that other states have problems as well.

If you are HVAC and licensed, I'd start my own small biz and help people who are unemployed by giving them a break. I can only afford to hire retired guys who charge 20. an hour for trades...and they are never without work.

Ohio is having serious problems in this area and every recruiter will tell you this is true if they are honest. Good luck to us all.

I am 51 and I am seeing that we are grouped with the 29-35 year old group in terms of not wanting corporate BS to have to deal with and just find a focused job in something where we are autonomous and productive........hard to find unless you own your own biz.

I am in Massachusetts and have been out of work since Sept. I have been to recruiters, looking on line and networking. There seems to be no jobs in this area either. (I am 40, college degree and twenty years of business experience). I am even looking at jobs that pay in the $30,000 (before I got laid off I was in the $70,000 range) and not getting responses! Hi:
I am in the same situation. Exactly. I am living off of my savings, which used to be my retirement in a work of progress. I am deleting all I have at this point and there isn't a thing I can do about it. I work part time, but still need family help to get me through this. I worked for a nonprofit in Ohio which was exempt from any law concerning discrimination when I left to have surgery. Now I am without healed up, but can't find work, have no health insurance , and my care is starting to erode. I can't get a doc to see me and let me pay cash, for less than $100. for a consult or check up. This is why the ER's across the nation are filled with people who have the need for general medical care...what a mess this country is in and what is going to happen to the next generation...our kids??

ERIC, people are educated and skilled , the jobs are not here.
Physical disability and health issues also keep some people from being able to do certain jobs. Some can't afford retraining and upgrading of skills.
Some are losing it all due to an inability to bounce back from a major setback.
My $139,000 Cleveland Clinic surgery was not covered by insurance.
There are too many issues that people are involved with that make your statement too general and sweeping across a complex problem. I think the country is about to make some major changes that are separating the classes even further and this is only the beginning, unless you are self employed and doing business much in cash. Good luck to all of us.

White, Male, single (especially) but married too = forget it. They are GIVING jobs to everyone else and this country wonders what the heck is wrong with it and why service stinks, products stink and why violence in our cities is out of control (not that I condone that behavior) BUT it does explain a lot!

Wake up USA. Wake UP. Stop crapping on the folks with the experience and knowledge and start hiring us!!!

Eric,

I cant wait until you're the one who is sitting there combing through pages of jobs which you are highly qualified for, have tons of experience and real-world knowledge about, and have a proven track record with dozens of references but your resume is tossed aside because why should they hire you when they can hire someone 10 to 15 years younger and pay them 30 to 40 thousand less and, if at all possible, hire someone in India or China to do it for EVEN LESS and not have to pay benefits nor taxes on those salaries?

Global Economy my rear. Its call "squeeze as much profits as possible" out of an already very tired workforce and its going all explode one day. You'll see. Good luck. Dont lose that job and dont leave that job because there ARE NO OTHERS FOR YOU out there, unless you're a female, black, hispanic or overseas wanting to do off-shore work in the USA.

DONT even TRY to deny its happening.

I honestly think someone is BS'ing everyone with these low unemployment numbers which get reported every month. Then you see jobs in the papers and no one responds. You call them and they dont want to talk to you. You walk in and they speak to you like you're trash.

What goes around, comes around - recruiters, HR folks, CEO's... You watch.

they want dirt cheap cost over quality higher cost experience, because they figure the customer (who gets treated like crap for the most part) will stick around even with lousy service, and in the present state of affairs and confusion and time restraints, it's probably true.

Not true at all. I fire ALL companies that treat me like crap. There are plenty of competing places to buy ANYTHING these days. These companies better wake up...

I actually put in my cover letter that I was willing to work as a FREE INTERN to see if would be a good fit for them. I also said I would work at entry level pay.

Guess what? I am an single white american born male, Bachelor of Electrical Engineer degree, with about 4 1/2 years experience.

Something horribly wrong is going on in our country. Don't bother to write to your congressman. I did that and he just gave me job hunting advice that I already exhausted. That's why I wrote a complaint letter to him in the first place, about the state of our economy and jobs. Those politicians don't care as long as they can ride out there terms to their liking.

PS, I'm still unemployed, just hit my 5 year mark.

I believe you absolutely!
I have a friend who had 28 yrs. service with the Good Year Company and was given his walking papers last year. He's only found one job, was fired from that after 2 months and continues to consult.

Can you do some consulting?

It's not any easier for women, white, professionally degreed...there is no difference. I am interviewing for jobs at 30k and my sons make more than I do in landscaping, neither went to college. The bottom line is that this is a service economy and the only way to make a living is to own your own service company or be very very versatile. IF I didn't have physical limitations ,I'd start a service company...painting, yard work, anything, and I"m sure I'd have a means of supporting myself. I'm without health insurance and pay for all my own meds and health care needs. Our problems are not isolated, this is what is happening across America...everywhere. Our economy is changing.

What kind of engineer?
