I'll turn 60 this September.

After turning in an on-line resume to ATT, I realized that an employer can determine my age by looking at the year I graduated from college.

That employer can then simply send a return email saying they are considering other employees.

Has anyone else suspected this possible strategy?

YES! I recently started looking for a new job and ALL the large companies I have applied to ask the same 3 questions early on in their applications…
(And you must answer them or the application won’t move forward)
1: Education level?
2: School attended?
AND THE BIG ONE: 3: YEAR GRADUATED?
And one other note: ALL the large companies (no exceptions) will not accept your resume via e-mail or fax … they insist you go to their sites and fill out the application. Oh yes, you can insert the resume at the end of the application but if you’re over 40 or 50 don’t expect more then a reply, “We will keep your application on file.”
So is it age discrimination? YES definitely!! And the big question is why do our so-called HR / ACLU guardians allow it to happen????

As far as your resume, leave the year off. I doesn't really matter when you graduated but that you did. To get around online applications, see if you can find out the name of the person actually hiring, talk them up and filling out an online application should be nothing more than a formality. Bypass HR, if at all possible. They are they there to winnow down hundreds of applications to a reasonable star 10- and they ain't too nice in the process.
