C&B is a wonderful company, unless you work for them. The products they offer are outstanding.
They hire on for seasonal means only. If after 3 months they do not like your style, they will easily let you go. The company doesn't want to invest any insurance into their employess, so they will hire 40 people each season, and once that season is over, so is the job for many people.
I enjoyed working in the call center, it's interesting to take catalog orders over the phone. Another perk is that the merchandise is available in a showroom to explain to the customer the texture, size, color, etc.
If you apply for a job with them, MAKE SURE you are on time, and miss no days of work, and be prepared to work at least one weekend day.

I've worked for Crate and Barrel at the Madison Avenue store for about 2 years. It seemed like a great company at first, but soon I realized that the company is very misleading. One thing that had caught my attention was that ALL of top management are caucasian, despite the fact that the work environment is wonderfully diverse. They promote from within, but not too many latinos, blacks and asians are getting promoted and some have been there since the store opened in the 90's. The ones that do get promoted, after months and years of hard work and dedication, only get BS titles. Its equivalent to someone being told that they are now supervisor, but yet they are still wearing the smock/apron and recieving little pay and alot more responsibility. I have also witness caucasians that only been with the comapny for a few months receive outrageous promotions before a more qualified non white associate does that has already expressed interest in moving ahead. I have always been comfortable with my sales position because I was there part time while being a full time student at NYU studying business, so these statements have nothing to do with bitterness.
Another thing is that they treat all fellow employees as if we are in high school. The dress code is bogus, not becasue of what we are told to wear and how to look, but because of the fact that not everyone follows the dress code. In other words, a manager will say that they don't like the way that your hair looks and you need to fix it, or your shoes look like that they can pass for sneakers from a distance, so you will have to change them. However, management trainees are walking around with their tattoos, tongue rings and wrinkled/untucked shirts on. What a wonderful example to set for your fellow employees...
Crate is an okay company, but it is full of lies, brown nosing and spitefulness. So proceed the Madison Avenue store with caution while I continue to work on my degree(:

I agree with blaqualicious in Brooklyn, New York, but every time I try to reply to this post, I think the post is so close to the character limit, it won't let me add comments as a reply. I could take out some of their comments, but it's all valid.

My response: Class action suits, on contingency, where the law firm offers to take the case and won't charge you and the other participants lose. I don't know whether this is possible, to file a class action on contingency, but I would assume some law firms file their own lawsuits, without provocation, this may be possible too. It can't hurt to ask. I'm tired of discrimination and favoritism and nepotism.

The interesting visuals I imagine when blaqualicious in Brooklyn, New York describes management's criticism of people of diversity's hair and apparel, I can only imagine they don't like hair or dress different from their own, which it appears is all white, no kinky hair or street styles, huh? I don't mean to offend by saying kinky; (in no particular order): Black/African American/Latino/Hispanic is all beautiful.

This company is a complete joke. Managers hold grudges with workers, unprofessional work environment and lack of diversity in the management team. Oh and they don't have any male managers. The only male manager we had was arrested for Grand Larceny, stole thousands of dollars from the company. The pay is horrible as well. I use to work at the Manhattan store that was across the street from the Apple store, on Madison ave.

I went there months ago to apply for a job. There was a changing of the shifts. From what I saw, if the I.N.S. ever went there, I think they would have a field day.

I'm stunned at these comments. I worked in the Orlando store, and my 2 managers were a black woman and a Hispanic man.
They pay was better than any other retail job I've had in FL.
MOST of the dept. leads were minorities of all types.
I guess the NYC stores are less progressive than down in the South? Go figure.

Not only that, they hire illegals who have fake social security numbers....... The only way they get away with this is that they are a privately held company...if they were public the government would know what goes on.

It is so amazing that this 'company image' stretches throughout the company. I work in the distribution center in naperville, il, and I have seen more brown-nosing, bogus promotions, giving jobs to friends, etc, in my four years there than is believable. I have seen managers hire family friends in lead positions wheen there is better qualified people who applied. The only way they can get away with this is because they are privately held... the head honchos at the top have free reign without public or government knowledge! If they were public, there would be lawsuits throughout.

In your case there are no male managers, but believe me this company practices "equal discrimination" The only way to move ahead is to be a brown-noser... It doesn't matter that you work hard or care about your job. The only thing that matters is which managers are your friends and which one you can BS with. Not to mention, in the distribution center, most people are related. I have seen countless husband/wives, in-laws, etc, move their way up the ladder through which manager they know/are related to... what a joke, my only hope is one day people will stop buying their products and the public will get to know them for what they really are......

i work at the madison ave store in NY for 10yr and its a complate joke they dont promote form with in unless you kiss butt or back stab people. they always hire people to be mangers form the outside and fast track them to say they promote form with in but its all lies. they do have/had people of other races mangers but mostly white female. they hold gruges against anyone who has a free thought in thier head. all they want is young and dumb people to boss around. in the past it was a great job and i really enjoyed working there. like blaqualicious in Brooklyn, New York said "only get BS titles. Its equivalent to someone being told that they are now supervisor." for i seen it happend then that person gets in trouble if people dont listien to them for we all know that title is meaning less. the way they treat us now is so bad the morale is so low. i was a big supporter of the mangers and the store. but when i got ill they and came back i am beign treated as an outcast. i am not bitter just very upset that a job that i enjoy working at turn into a nightmare now if i do anything its usely undone or i get yelled at.

well that's another issue, they work through temp' agencies, who don't check their social security numbers, so the companies gets cheap illegal labor... however if you work for the company, you will see that the managers/supervisors are all related.... for example, there is a father/daughter, husbands/wives, in-laws, etc... all in higher up positions... when did you apply? are you coming into the madness?

I know, but idiotic people in management don't know, that you can motivate and make people feel good about their jobs and their work with little or no money. Crate and Barrel doesn't get it. The morale at their stores has never been lower. The economy is affecting sales. Yet the management is telling the staff that they will no longer tolerate mediocrity and there is silence when asked about layoffs. Their policy about the first person who speaks with a customer gets the sale is ridiculous when a second person spends 99% of the time closing the deal, and when an employee steals a sale, they are never punished. Employees are asked to come in at 8:30 in the morning for meetings when a one sheet piece of paper handed out could be as effective. Employees are asked to dress upscale when they are not earning enough to buy nice clothes. One employee who made a complaint to company headquarters and asked for annominity (and was promised) was escorted out by security.

everything i've read is true. crate favors women - particularly young, single women. never, and i mean never question 'authority' as it will be the last time you question anyone at crate. i can't speak about the corporate offices, but at the regional/area/store level it is all about who can kiss butt the best, who can house sit for the area/regional manners, and who doesn't have a penis. age is a big factor EXCEPT if you are an area or regional - then it only matters if you are a woman. don't get me wrong. there are some excellent store managers and area managers. one regional, who shall remain nameless, is a joke. i've even seen managers come down on someone because they didn't 'smile' at an area manager. they were marked and eventually let go. that's insane. it doesn't matter if you know the business, have good cs skills, get the details, etc. it is all about who they like the most WITHOUT regard to talent, training, skills, ability. let me say again, there are some good managers who somehow have slipped under the radar - but they are few and far between. the passion that gordon has spoken about for so long seems to stop at the regional/area level. it's too bad because crate has lost it way.

I worked for crate for 11 years with the majority of the time in nyc, C&B gave me pleanty of opportunities. Theres a reason people dont get promoted even if they have been working there for ten years, Its because they are LAZY!!!!! Its not race or gender these people need to get over it its a shock that most people who have been there that long havent been fired, oh yeah you either have to get caught stealing or kill someone to get fired. Another thing Crate & Barrel is about selling an image not just inventory, thats what retail is if you dont like it quit.

I've read these comments and for the most part I see a general consensus...don't work there if you aren't willing to suck up. I work for the one in Chicago, the Michigan Avenue location. It's hard finding a job these days. Sometimes people will take anything on account of they need something to pay the bills, but working for this company is neither good for the soul or the body. The employees can be great at the store I work for, but management...there just isn't enough time to describe the disgusting, repulsive way they treat the people that are undeniably making the money for a company that has no regard for the employee. This isn't a rant, this isn't a disgruntled employee seeking revenge, these are the facts. Until they rework the training for management, working for this company would be a lost not a gain...I will say this, you can meet great people and depending on the people you link up with you can learn a lot to move on to the next best thing. Other than that, please don't waste your time.
