I haven't been at Dillards long enough to say anything about the company itself. In fact, I rather liked the merchandise and people I've met in management. I was so thrilled when I got that job: a retail job with a higher than average pay scale and full time hours. It wasn't till I was put into my department that I got to feel the full effects of the sink or swim environment. Now I'm no stranger to sales and the idea of a quota; In fact I initially welcomed the challenge. But I couldn't make it. We had 5 others in my department who became aggressively attached to the register to the point of not allowing me to use the ones often in range of customers. So I roamed and greeted guests. But all the friendliness in the world isn't going to make someone buy something they aren't all too interested in. It was especially discouraging to help a guest just to have them thank me and take their purchase to a register with a ready and waiting cashier. In my time at Dillards, I met a lot of bright and fun people so I can't say the entire experience was a wash. The job might have panned out better had I been in a different department or had less competition. My store usually had more employees than customers in my department at any given time. I can't say I ever befriended any that initially started in my department as they all saw each other as competition for their quotas. I kind of feel the pressure on sales fosters that sort of negativity when staffing is high and so are the quotas. But that's just my own personal opinion. I do believe given the right circumstances or personalities, one could make happiness for themselves at Dillards. And though I'm exceptionally friendly and would even go as far as to say ambitious, my personality wouldn't allow me to fight or throw a coworker under the bus for a sale. Not even the less than friendly types. I do wish anyone embarking on a Dillard's career the best of luck. You'll need it. |

Bi-annual update. Injured on the job--a torn ligament. Happened since I was forced to sit on the floor to fit shoes. We have those little stools for fitting but we aren't allowed to use them!? Since they get in the way of strollers??? Strollers don't get hurt--people do. Sent to customer service for 2 months. I have yet to see an orthopedic specialist as was recommended by the quack at the clinic they sent me to when I was first injured. I can walk a little bit--from the time clock to the back of the store and that's about it.
I also received a letter from their nurse case manager that they will be denying my claim since I have mild arthritis in the joint. Well, that's true, but I had that before my injury and have it in my other knee--that's not the issue. I am forced to continuously bend down, sit on the floor and rise up again, all day long. I am right handed and right legged as well, so the repeated strain day after day finally did me in. It could have been avoided if I had been allowed to use the damn stools. |

So, now I will probably be sent back to the sales floor without ever receiving any benefits from their so called Injury Benefit Plan. I cannot risk damaging my knee further and am unable to climb ladders to reach shoes in the stockroom. I'm just going to sit down and use a wheelchair to get around when my leg gives out. I plan to see my own doctor and appeal their decision. I will update. |

Serf, I was injured at work last May when two huge iron sign holders fell off a dolly coming out of the elevator & hit me on the right shoulder & they sent me to the quack at the "clinic" where I sat for six hours before I was urine & breath tested for drugs & alcohol & x-rayed. Then a so-called doctor told me I'd be OK & handed me some Tylenol & an ice pack. I already have a steel plate & screws in my neck & two herniated disks so I knew that you couldn't see disk damage in an x-ray. He refused an MRI & told me I was fine & to go back to work & start physical therapy in two days, which is extremely unwise before you check for damage so I knew better. Dillards refused to pay for me going to my doctor or another reputable one & I kept fighting them so they wrote me up for a bunch of ridiculous petty charges & fired me in July. I wanted to quit for a long time but I wanted more for them to pay my unemployment which I'm still on. Please get out now or start coming in late. Nine times is the magic number & they'll fire you. I suffered permanent damage in my right knee from standing on my feet for 8 hours a day & am having to pay out of pocket for the MRI for my neck. Luckily, there isn't enough further damage to warrant surgery but it's taken me three months to recuperate from the stress of the abuse & bullying I received at the hands of those sadists whose idea of fun is to pit people against each other & torture anyone who tries to do the right thing. Get on unemployment & then try to get on disability if your knee doesn't get better. It's just going to get worse for you there, as everyone on here can tell you. |

Again to Angry and Determined, That's exactly how I feel--angry and determined. I know I'll have to watch my back, I'm sure they will find some excuse to try to fire me. When I talked to their abominable nurse case manager, one of the first things she asked was, "Well, you have insurance don't you?" Did you speak to that monster as well? Pat whatsit? Why would my insurance cover an on the job injury anyway? Oh, I'm sure Dillard's has some back door deal with Blue Cr*p and Blue Sh*t. Insurance no-one can afford to pay for. I plan to leave eventually, but not until I get my leg fixed. It is walkable for short distances but definitely not bendable or all day standable. Suppose it goes out when I'm on a ladder--what if I'm on pain pills--will I pass my drug test? What if I sustain another injury from my leg giving way? I think about this all the time. I am not sure what to do at this point. I will have to protest I guess--be just as obnoxious back. If they finally do nothing--I still get to see their paid quack on Tuesday, Oct. 11. If he is of no help I plan to practice some civil disobedience. Wear the ginormous leg brace they gave (or buy one that actually fits me) with some custom pin on buttons that explains why I have to wear it. You know, campaign buttons. All over the thing. I plan to embarrass them into doing the right thing. |

Dear Serf, Yes. Pat Daly. She said she never heard of anyone that has had spinal fusion getting an MRI. She questioned my honesty & I "tore her a new one" on the phone. I hung up on her after that & never accepted her calls again. Then one of the heads at Corporate in Little Rock wrote me some threatening letters, which I didn't answer, & then faxed one of the letters to HR & they called me in the office to pick it up. I read it & called the B.... at Corporate & she was just like Pat. I told her I wouldn't send my dog to the quacks at that doctor they had & asked her if she would send her children there. By the end of the call, all she said was "Wow" & I hung up. You can be tough & you can be rebellious but, in the end, you will be beaten down. Please believe me when I tell you, from hard experience, they have an evil, viscious, borderline-law-abiding team of lawyers working to protect them & they know all the tricks. It might make you feel better now to rebel & be determined to beat them down but if you end up letting one of those quacks do surgery on you, or just let your knee keep getting worse by not going to a real doctor, you'll regret it. I could tell you a lot more of what's to come. I promise you, this won't end well. I still haven't found work because all my experience for the last two years was in retail & I'm out. My knee & spine won't let me stand all day & I don't even like shopping in department stores now. I'm in the process of starting my own business but it will be a while before I make any money. Dillards has been sued many times by former employees & they're notorious for fighting dirty. I don't like to lose & I rarely do because I'm not afraid of anyone, but getting fired was the best case scenario for me. You've got to know when to cut your losses & get out, one way or the other, before it's too late. |

Dear Serf, I know alot about employment law. I have spent countless hours at tne Univ. of Memphis law library doing research. When you find a good lawyer, please discuss the "Humpty Dumpty" law. If he or she does not understand what you are talking about, either find another lawyer, or if you really like them, have them do research on it. It basically says " in an accident, including workman's comp, the law says that you have to be judged and "taken as you are" rather than the defendent being able to claim pre-existing conditons. ALSO, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO GO THRU THE EEOC TO SUE!!!! I wasted a year waiting on those fools to make a decision when I did NOT have to! Good Luck and God speed. You are going to have to fight like a son of a b______ to prevail.

Memphislea & Serf: I have chosen to invest all my time & energy in moving on to get a better life. I did check with four lawyers & they said my medical bills weren't enough for them to mess with & they didn't have any interest in all the abuse & bullying, etc. It takes a ton of time & energy to hate & go after revenge. I believe, just as the Bible says, "The wicked will not go unpunished", & will leave vengeance up to God. It's not that I don't feel like getting the upper hand & making them suffer, that would be fantastic, & it's not that I feel this is the way to go for everyone, it's just that I need ALL my energy to go toward surviving now & I trust God to keep me safe. I feel like I'm a survivor of trauma after my ordeal at Dillards. I was only there five months but was at Nordstrom for a year before that. I thought Nordstrom was bad but it was a picnic compared to Dillards. I hope one of you DOES win against them. It WILL take monumental effort & time & resources to do that & if anyone needs a witness or anyone to testify for their case, you can count me in. I truly wish the best for your efforts & sincerely hope no one gets hurt anymore than they already have. |

Hello Memphislea and Angry, I want justice really, not revenge. Revenge takes a person to a dark place and I don't want to go there--was there before and cannot go back. I will seek my own cure first and then argue the points of law later. I don't dislike what I do--selling kids shoes is something I enjoy doing. I get along with my co-workers (really!) There are only three of us and we have a common value system. Honesty and a sense of fair play. My manager is basically a decent guy. I can deal with the quota and credit apps. What I cannot deal with successfully is corporate policy. They must follow, perhaps even wrote, the handbook entitled, "1001 ways to screw your employees". The idea that we must forfeit all of our rights as citizens of the US in order to hold a job is untenable to me. We must fight against corporatism--another name for fascism--wherever we find it if we wish to remain free citizens. I have a moral duty to fight for justice. God made me a fighting type for a reason; I expect he has a use for me in this capacity. Ok--off the soapbox now, lol! I have support and I am not completely dependent on the Dillwad (my affectionate term for the place) for my income. I do thank God for that. Angry--glad you felt like you could get out. I am not so confident it will be easy for me to find another job if I leave. I am an older worker and I need to accomplish a few things with my income before I bid it good-bye. But first--I have to be able to work and that's going to cost about 6000.00 Ouch!! I don't have their sucky insurance. I did the numbers and it would have cost that plus the deductible and whatever is left over after the 80% if I did have insurance. About 10,000.00 total. Cash patients pay less. |

Memphislea, Well, I hope I don't get fired. My leg really hurts and the stress from that puts me in a bad frame of mind. Once fixed I'll take it easy in kids shoes, be very careful of what I do and try to save some $$. I will appear to be quite content. I'll try to do what guys do and compartmentalize. How *do* guys do that? How can you sue? Didn't you sign that arbitration agreement? Yeah--the EEOC is not the way to go at all. I'm not sure they stand for much of anything anymore either. Everything that once protected workers is no longer in force or has been completely dis-empowered. As far as workman's comp there isn't any for us workers in Texas. Dillard's is allowed to opt out and provide their own, what is it called? Oh yeah--was looking for that first word "Responsible Injury Benefit Plan". The plan is not subject to state workman's comp laws or the state insurance commission--responsible only to Dillard's self-interest. There is one caveat though--I never agreed to be bound by the terms of their plan. The plan states that all employees are "automatically covered", but it's not like the arbitration agreement--I didn't sign anything saying I ever agreed to it. I don't know if wanting to prevail is a waste of time or not. I hate feeling victimized though--see what happens to middle children when they grow up? Going to see Dr. Paid Expert Witness later today. Wish me luck :) |

Angry, Yeah, I know they fight dirty--there's a lot of stuff about them on the net. Fore warned is fore armed though. Filing some of it away for future reference. That Pat Daly was a trip wasn't she? I can't believe she ever passed her state boards. Oh, yeah, she works for Dillard's--they hire the lowest bidder = pond scum. What does she mean she never heard of an MRI being necessary before a spinal fusion? She must live under a rock...in a cave. It's the definitive diagnostic tool for spinal injuries. She's a complete moron that tries to intimidate and bully people. I didn't let her get to me though, was my usual sweet ditzy self and left her exasperated. She practically hung up on me. Oh--that corp lady--DH? Very much the same as PD. I wish you all the best on your business venture. I've started one too and I hope I can make enough money with it to walk away from that place in a year or so. Selling bridal stuff on eBay. I sold a veil!! One whole veil!!! Hey--it's a start--79 bucks! |

It helps to know that you are not alone. I cannot stress enough the fact that you need a great lawyer! You need a "Bulldog"!!! Document everything! Keep a smile on your face and remember this; Do NOT talk about this to anyone at Dillards, even trusted co-workers. You are on your own there. Trust me! Will tell you my story one day.........

Hi Memphislea, Saw the doctor. Did not go at all well. My husband and I arrived at the molding downtown office--and no-one else was there, 10:00 a.m. We walk in and the geezer opens the door to inner office and tells my husband he has to stay in the waiting room. I tell the dr. that I'd like my husband with me. Dr. replies only patients can come into the exam room. I repeat that I'd like my husband with me. Doc says no and orders my husband to "wait outside". My husbands asks him what doc doesn't want seen or heard in the exam room. I repeat that i have a right to have my husband with me. Dr. Puffs up and says "I'M IN CHARGE HERE!" and points to me and says, "You HAVE NOR RIGHTS! THIS IS OVER--OUT OF HERE NOW!!". So, we leave--on my way out the door I call through the glass receptionists window that he's a disgrace to the medical profession. We head down to the elevator. I am shaking and my husband is fuming. We look behind us and the monster is right behind us. I stop and look at him and shake my head. He passes me--he can walk much faster, and I pause at the steps and look down on him and ask, "How do you do it? How can you sleep at night? I know all about you and the things you do to your poor patients. You're a disgusting piece of humanity." He actually stopped and listened to me. I hobbled down the steps and headed to my car--bypassed him as he had stopped walking toward his car--a shiny new Lexus. After a few steps I turned around and told him, "You know--you're an old man and you're going to die soon. (due to old age) All a person can leave behind are their good deeds. And nobody dies rich. You just die. You can't take it with you. You know how I found about you--it's all over the internet--what you really do for a living--selling your opinion to anyone who will pay for it to deny people care--and giving convincing other doctors to do the same." |
|

cont'd. I handed him a rating from a poor guy he refused treatment to who found out 3 months later his pain was due to bone cancer. He took the paper, sat down in hi car and read it. I told him, "The internet lives forever--whatever is posted there will stay there--long after you're gone. I called that woman DH at corporate and asked when i would be seeing a real doctor. She said she didn't know--I told her I had waited 2 months--to be treated like that!!?? I said I was surprised Dillard's associated with doctors like that. Then I said, No--I'm really not. The internet is full of garbage about Dillard's and I hung up. I expect I will be fired tomorrow? |

Serf, If you do get fired, consider it a blessing. There were times when I stood up to them, especially in the last few days, that I was very uneasy walking to my car in the parking garage at work. I knew they were watching me because one time when I was in my car in the parking lot of a doctor's office, I saw in my rear-view mirror, a guy pull up in a car behind my car, stop, roll down his window, & take a picture of the back of my car where the license plate is, & when I opened my door & got out to ask him what the hell he was doing, he sped off real fast. Dillards knew I was going to be there because I had to ask my manager for time off to go there. That's just way too much drama for me. You're a tough cookie & I'm glad you're strong. I'm 59 years old & my husband left three years ago after 22 years of marriage. I was a housewife for all that time & I was thrown out into the working world & being at Dillards almost did me in. Believe me, I can't afford to be without a job. Unemployment barely pays my bills & my credit card debt is going way up, so I was not in a reasonable position to quit work. I fought the good fight for justice, yes, that is a better term rather than revenge, but I'm all alone, trying to keep my home, & I need to stay far away from abusive situations & evil people in order for me to be able to make. I paid almost $200 a month for their healthcare & when I went for an MRI, they said I had to pay $2,500!!! That's the deductible!! I self paid for it & the total charge was just about $600, which I'm paying out. That "doctor" you saw sure did tell Dillards about what happened but they won't mention it to you. They'll just start writing you up for anything & everything. The day after that guy took a picture of me being at the doctor's to get an MRI, I was called into my manager's office & written up for five charges. One of them was being caught (camera or unknown witness) eating a snack on a Sunday. That's against the rules :) |

January Update Yes, Dillard's is definitely the worst sh*thole ever. I do have an attorney now and we'll see where this all goes. I can't quit (would need unemployment) and I'm in constant pain and have no patience for their crap whatsoever. Now they're stealing from me--and other employees I know of. I made two payments on my pay as you go credit card on January 1st, 200.00 and 250.00, all cash of course. They will not credit the 200.00 cash payment to my account, nor will the store manager give me my cash back. Says it's GE money's fault and there is nothing he can do. I told him that Dillards really sucks then, doesn't it? Well, I consider this theft and am not above calling the sheriff to come take care of it. I have called the cops in before when I was assaulted by another coworker and can do it again for being robbed. Other employees have had the same thing happen to them. They are stealing from us to cook the books. 275 stores with perhaps 20 at each store with a pay as you go card works out to over a million bucks (my low ball estimate) for not posting an average of let's say, 200.00 per person. If you close your account they will send you your balance in 3-4 weeks--after their fiscal year ends. This is too much. I am closing my account as soon as that 200.00 is posted. I will never buy another piece of cr*p from that store. I am trying to tough it out so I can get insurance at the next open enrollment. If they deny me, then I will just add it to the attorney's bag of Dillard's cr*p. I email every incident to management and print copies for myself and just keep adding it to the bag. The exceptions not excused is another issue. Document, send email to self, print and add to bag of cr*p. I am not sure where when or where this will all end, but I must see it through to whatever end that is. I am so angry today, it's unbelievable. I called in sick--I am that upset. Meanwhile--the bridal business is doing a little better. |

This is the most EVIL company i have ever seen in all my years. |

I started working at Dillards in October of 2010. I absolutely love fashion so I thought this would be the perfect job for me. Boy, was I wrong!! TRAINING: I went through 3 weeks of so called "training." LMAO! It was more like slave work. They put you in every department so you can "learn" about every product. Umm, no! You do their markdowns, mannequins, and slave work while they help customers and ring stuff up. The employees befriend you while your training so that you will ring stuff up under their number to help their quota then when you're done with training, they stab you in the back and talk bad about you in front of customers just to get a sale. On the last day of your training, you get 50% off of any "work-related merchandise." You basically rack up on new clothes. It's pretty cool until you have every dang employee harass you for that HUGE sale. DEPARTMENT PLACING: On the last day of training, the assistant manager took 12 of the trainees into the training room and asked us to list the 3 department we would like to work in and the 3 we didn't. Pretty much everyone went where they wanted to. One of my good friends, who I might add is a very laid back, no-conflict type of person, was put into the shoe department. Anyone who works at Dillards know that the shoe department is like being out into a tiger cage with a t-bone laying in the middle of the cage. You have to have tough skin and willing to step all over someone just for a sale. Well, this girl was NOT that type of person. And management knew that! She begged to be put somewhere else but they refused. Instead, they told her that if within 3 months she still unhappy, they will move her somewhere else. 3 months rolled around. Still in shoes. 3 more months: still there. Month later; FIRED! She didnt make her quota like she told them she wouldnt. They didnt move her like they told her they would so she lost her job along with 5 more people who asked not to be in the shoe department. |

RAISES: On my last day of training, I got a 50 cent raise. Not much, but some. Then in February, I got offered a $2.50 raise and a "Swimsuit/Coat Specialist" position. Of course I took it. I was wanting to buy a new car and when I heard the word "raise" a new car was all I could think about. BIG MISTAKE!!! I moved to my new department the first of March. Need I remind you that I was doing extremely well in Juniors but that took as quick turn. When I moved, I moved in the off season. I moved when Juniors was getting ready for prom which meant guaranteed sales and when it was getting too hot for coats but yet to chilly for swimsuits so NOBODY was buying anything. When you get a raise, your quota gets higher also. I would have a quota of $1200 and only one sale then that would roll over to the next day and be added to that days quota. Then before you realize it, you're $10,000 in the hole. And that never goes unnoticed!! |

PACESETTERS: This is the title given to the workers who will throw you under the bus and basically kill you for a sale. These are the workers that basically run the store. If you are not a pacesetter, you are NOTHING! Atleast in the store I worked in. That's about all I can think about as of right now. It's late. I'm tired. But I just wanted to give everyone a thorough review of the slave company known as Dillard's. You haven't heard the last of me. I'll be back. And remember kids, At Dillards you're not a person, you're just a number!! |
