Todd Mayson in Charleston, South Carolina said: Racism is a horrible terrible unfortunate fact in our society. But to suggest that the company is at fault is not factual. What area where the children in??? Where they in juniors or streetwear? These two areas are by far the highest theft areas in the store. These areas are constantly watched. Are you suggesting that if an officer is watching an African American then he must be racist that within itself is suggesting that all officers are racist. Trust me I know racism does exist and should be punishable but there are bigger pictures to each circumstance. My eyes are more open then you may suggest.

WE WERE FOLLOWED NOTICE I SAID WE... IT STARTED DOWNSTAIRS IN SHOES AND IT WENT ON FROM THERE. I WAS INTRODUCING THEM TO THE PEOPLE I WORKED WITH AND EVEN WENT TO THE OFFICE AND INTRODUCED THEM TO MY STORE MANAGER BECAUSE I WAS PROUD OF WHERE I WORKED. HE HUNG AROUND THEN DID A TURN AROUND AND KEPT US IN VEIW. YOU ARE BLINDED. IT 'S GREAT TO BE POSITIVE BUT BE REAL ALSO. BY THE WAY WE WERE ALL WELL DRESSED THAT DAY. SHAME ON DILLARDS FOR ALLOWING THIS BEHAVIOR AT THEIR STORES IT IS UP TO THEM AND THEIR MANAGERS TO DO BETTER!

CBS News SHOW: 60 MINUTES (7:00 PM ET) March 25, 2001, Sunday:
BRADLEY: (Voiceover) "Dillard's executives say they have an excellent record--just a handful of complaints among millions of customers each month. And they say their stores don't treat minorities any differently than anyone else. But recently, seven Dillard's employees have testified their district manager--a man who supervised 13 stores--commonly referred to black shoppers as "ni--ers" and "jigaboos." And worse than that, some people say that the company's overly aggressive security guards have gone beyond insults to police brutality."
www.drhrlaw.com/news/60minutes.html

"Founded in 1938 in Little Rock, Ark., the company has compiled a long list of ethical problems, including poor business practices regarding sweatshops, and disputes over not paying store suppliers, and the racial profiling of customers...."
www.ethicalshopping.com/companies/dillards.html

"The issue of racial profiling in retail stores gained national attention during the 1990s following two ABC television broadcasts ("True Colors" on PrimeTime Live and an ABC News 20/20 investigative report) and some highly-publicized lawsuits involving well-known establishments such as Eddie Bauer, Dillard's Department Stores, and Denny's Restaurants."

Are you saying that the officer knowing you are a manager at the store followed you because he is racial profiling? I find that hard to believe....not saying you do not feel that way, but maybe you are just paranoid. Maybe the officer actually thought you were stealing you nor I can see what his reasons were. I think it is very easy for people to take the easy target of racism for most every uncormfortable circumstance they find theirselves.

You can find similar stories on any company in this caliber. If this DM truly was guilty of these hateful and tasteless practice of racism then he deserved to be dismissed. Still this doesn't mean that Dillards as a whole or the members of the family are racist.

"Plaintiffs' expert Jerome Williams, a professor from the University of Texas, testified that while around 23 percent of Dillard's shoppers were black, they made up about 97 percent of those stopped by security. But defense expert psychologist Barbara Hart said the data was flawed, that no baseline has ever been established to determine if any law enforcement agency or any corporation is engaging in racial profiling. Dillard's has been on the defense in racial discrimination and racial profiling suits dating back to the early 1990s, agreeing to large settlements and paying jury awards in several cases."
www.setexasrecord.com/news/203571-defense-says-no-proof-of-racial-profiling-in-dillards-trial

"The store chain, based in Arkansas has also faced dozens of racial profiling lawsuits, claiming harassment and false arrest, in other states including Arkansas, Iowa, and Texas. Evidence produced in one case showed that although 16 percent of its shoppers were African American, 87 percent of the false arrest claims were made by them. In Texas, Dillard settled and paid money to the family of an African American customer who died at a store after being beaten and hog-tied while being detained, and has also settled discrimination suits by employees in Kansas and Missouri."
www.aclu.org/racialjustice/racialprofiling/21741res20051123.html

"...Dillard's careless approach to human resource management raises an important issue for all employers whose workers are in contact with the general public. Dillard's apparently hired a woman with some serious attitude problems. They compounded this mistake ("negligent hiring") by keeping her on the job ("negligent retention"), despite racist behavior toward certain (minority) customers...Dillard's put the wrong person on their sales team. They kept her there, despite poor performance."

I agree. Todd, Dillard's will use you up and dump you like garbage when you least expect it.

And, no, I never met any of the Dillards personally because whenever they came to any of the stores where I worked management instructed us not to look at them or speak to them. You know, like they are royalty.

I am a Dillards manager and I believe in my company and I know just by my own common sense that Dillards is not a racist based company. We are given a mandate from Dillards to treat each and every customer with genuine care to provide to them a happy shopping experience. Not one time in training was I trained to racially profile or to ignore Afr. Amer. or Latinos customers. I strongly desire to grow with Dillards to ensure injustices towards minoritys will not be tolerated. Racist are everywhere and does not exclude caucasians, african americans or any other race.

You are definately a bitter ex employee spewing elaborate lies. Not once have I ever had a bad experience where Any Dillard or Corporate employee ever was belittleing or condescending towards me or any one I saw them come in contact with. On the contrary, they were very polite and encouring and overly greatful. It sadens me to think you can say something like that with a clear conscious.

Funny, Todd, you're the only one on this board who firmly believes Dillard's is a great company. You even refuse to believe the preponderance of evidence that suggests Dillard's is a bad place to work. I used to work with a Todd who got promoted to ASM even though he had a poor work record and a well-known coke habit. One of his assignments was to hide in the parking lot outside and spy on employees going on their breaks. Of course, even as much as he kissed up they eventually fired him. Why did he get promoted anyway? Because nobody wanted the job. Retail management is possibly one of the worst jobs a human can hold.

So you have your beliefs (albeit misguided), and I have mine. I agree I'm bitter. I have nothing good to say about Dillards' nor does anyone else I know personally who ever worked for them. I met some fantastic people while I worked for Dillard's. (of course none of them are still there). That's about the only good thing I can say about the company.

I am once again amazed by how it is always an x employee who is trash talking Dillards, Belks, JCPen, and any other position with any company. I know my store and I know we are fair around the board not because of any punishment that may befall us for doing what is right but doing what is right for conscious sake. I am a diligent believer in the teachings of Christ and I firmly hold understanding and truth close to my heart and that is why I will sucede in life and within my career.

-Chris McGoey, nationally known store security expert, San Antonio Current

“I don’t like picking on one chain, but they are so bad, and they don’t show any hint of changing. Their guards are going to keep stopping people, and searching people, and beating people, and people, and it just begs the question: Why
hasn’t Dillard’s done something?”
-Chris McGoey, San Antonio Current

:: Dillard's Customer Mistreatment ::

How large a problem is Dillard's customer mistreatment?
Dillard's customer mistreatment, according to some experts, may be on the rise due to a disproportionate increase in spending power of African-Americans and limited growth of retail outlets in African-American neighborhoods.

Why is Dillard’s currently involved in lawsuits?
Dillard’s has been involved in a long history of problems between their company and minority groups. Former and present employees have claimed discrimination and customers have filed mistreatment cases against them. Punitive damages have been awarded to victims that have been able to prove they were wrongfully accused of shoplifting.

I beg to differ - we had a visit by one of the Dillard's recently and not once did he or his entourage stop to say hello or say thank you to any of us "sales associates." We are the ones out there everyday, especially in this economy. struggling to sell their merchandise and provide excellent customer service while we are also stocking, marking down, cleaning, dusting(fixtures top to bottom). Also, another issue I have with Dillards is the "PAY CUT" that I just got. The few who got a pay cut did not get sales from other associates while we were on vacation, off or on our lunch break. To me, that just seems dishonest and is not a true picture of one's selling ability. That was not a practice allowed in other retail establishments that I worked in. In fact it was grounds for termination. But in Dillards it is all so routine. Is that normal practice in every Dillard's?

I noticed every manager including upper management is always worried about being fired. I never have time to actually use my management skills because I am constanly being bombarded with possible visits from corporate. They seem to make rules as they go along. For instance, I have seen on several occasions an associate told that they can not switch departments until they have at least three months of increased sales in the department they are in...but if they like you they will transfer you to whatever department they would like to transfer you to. I was hoodwinked into the position I am in now as manager of both home store and childrens, which is a totally unreasonable coupling of departments, when I was interviewed for the job I was not told that the two managers before me had quit because of the unreasonable objections put before them. Homestore itself needs it's own manager to be productive. Hopefully matters will become better or they can expect my two weeks notice soon.

The Flag Store in Norfolk, VA has the same set-up. Home Store and Children's Dept. are managed by one Manager and this has been the case for the last 1 1/2. So as far as I can see this will not change.

OKay, listen to my store guys!! First off I"m going to start with two weeks ago!!

I recently started working at Dillard's and you have to go through a 3 week training course. However, when I was first hired I was told I was going to be doing Visual Merchandising!! Well, my second day there I heard from other employees that they already had a visual merchandising person!! so I talked to the store manager and she said she will talk to the girl her hired me, which her name is Emily! SO a week roles by and heather the store manager calls me in her office and she says, " first off I talked to Emily and she had no intentions of hiring me for the visual merchandising position and second of all we are getting negative feedback from managers in different departments saying you have an attitude, you do not wnat to be here and you have to smile all the time." I just told her that "I have never worked full time before so my body is not use to it and i ahve no clue what your talking about having an attitude.

" So then a week roles by and this morning the assistant manager talks to me and says, " Emily said yesterday when you worked with her you had an attitude, you never smile, you do not even talk to the employees and so on"

This is 100% wrong and I have no clue what the hell they are talking about because i have never given attitude and i make sure i do not at a job!!!!! I'm 100% sure of that... so then i asked the assistant manager... " is it because i was suppose to have the visual merchandising position and now I do not get to do it?" she said " no"

That does not make sense to me!!! so then i talked to a bunch of people,,, my mom and brandon... and they said to chew the assistant manager out and talk to her..and say your quit because that is not right to single someone out for things i did not do..

even the employees who i work with all day long said they have no clue what the managers are tlaking about!!!

so i went and talked to the assistant manager a

I have to agree with your comment about when the Dillards visit. They don't address anyone but ASMs and higher, it's just them though. Any other visit weather it be district manager or district visual person, they tend to talk to the people in the department. You have to be a stand out employee for them to talk to you though. Weird story though is that our district visual person was having a visit and she was walking with the ops manager and store manager and our dept manager and she comes up to me and say "Come on, walk with us" It was weird being included in that, but it a way it was nice to know that she was open to feedback from someone on my level.
Also about the pay cuts, we had two dillards in our town and one closed in Feb. So you would think our sales would be doing ok, but they're not. Every person in my department is getting a paycut. Some of these people came from the other store and they are getting a pay cut as well. People who have been with the company for 8 yrs are getting a paycut because our SPHs are doubled

I don't agree with the racial profiling involved with Dillards security, It all depends on where you live. We live in a college town, and 95% of the people who get caught shoplifting are white college or high school girls. We have a little room by the time clock where they keep the people who are getting arrested, its always some young girl who got caught stealing a shirt or some earrings or something.. So dumb, espically if they are a college student, they loose their scholarships because if it

I have worked for Dillards for over 20 years and the longer you work for the company the more they screw you. I make less than all the new people on the floor who do nothing but stand at the register and grab sales. Meanwhile the hard working employees doing the markdowns and stockwork are getting the pay cuts. Management will always go to the people they know will do the work and let the sharks do nothing but wait on customers and get pay raises. Also after so many years with the company I had to jump through hoops to get my time off we are only allowed to take vacation 4 months out of the year...Why Christmas,Presidents day,Memorial Day, Labor Day, Forth of July,Easter,Mothers Day,Fathers Day,inventory....I wanted take a week of the first week of july, easter week or mothers day week I was told NO for all of these. Finally after going to the Store Manager who tried to make me feel like I was asking for a million dollars he let me take Mothers day week wasn't that nice. Then my co-worker was able to take 4th of July week off even though I put my request in 4 months before him. I have also worked every single inventory shift for 20 years . I was always told I would get fired if I did not show up for inventory WRONG if you are a recent new hire you can get away with it. I also read a notice that EVERYONE has to work inventory or the sales floor no time requested off again a new employee was allowed to take inventory weekend off...Dillards does not treat their employees with any respect you would think that being for a company for so long you would be treated a little better but they do not value hard working loyal workers.

AFTER BEING AT DILLARD'S FOR A MONTH, I REALIZED IT WAS THE MOST UNORGANIZED & INCONSISTANT COMPANIES I'VE EVER WORKED FOR AND I'VE BEEN IN RETAIL FOR 26 YEARS. I'VE BEEN THERE FOR 3 YRS NOW AND FINALLY HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO GET OUT.
THE RATE OF PAY IS MODERATE. SALES ASSOCIATES START OFF AT A HIGH RATE OF PAY AS AN INSENTIVE TO TAKE THE JOB. AFTER 3 WEEKS OF "TRAINING", WHICH USUALLY MEANS DOING GRUNT WORK AND OBTAINING NO REAL "ON THE FLOOR" TRAINING, THEY ARE SENT TO THE SALES FLOOR UNPREPARED FOR THE AMOUNT OF TASKING THEY HAVE TO DO, WHICH TAKES THE ASSOCIATES AWAY FROM WHAT THEY WERE HIRED TO DO - ASSIST CUSTOMERS AND SELL. THIS RESULTS IN ASSOCIATES' SALES GOALS TO NOT BE MET, THUS A PAY CUT IS GIVEN WITHIN 3 MONTHS OF BEING START DATE. ALSO, ASSOCIATES ARE TREATED LIKE WORK HORSES, BY SALES MANAGERS. I'VE HEARD ASSOCIATES BEING YELLED AT, CUSSED OUT, CALLED NAMES, THREATENED AND EVENTUALLY SENT HOME, SIMPLY BECAUSE THERE AREN'T ENOUGH HOURS IN THE DAY TO COMPLETE THE TASKS AT HAND. I'VE WATCHED GROWN ADULT MEN AND WOMEN GOING ABOUT THEIR TASKS, IN TEARS, DUE TO THE HARSH TREATMENT DELIVERED BY SALES MANAGERS.
I HAD TO ENDURE MANY CORPORATE VISITS, WHERE I WOULD BE TOLD ONE WAY THAT MY JOB HAD TO BE DONE BY ONE VISITOR AND A COMPLETELY OPPOSITE WAY OF DOING MY JOB, RESULTING IN "WALK THRUS" LASTING UP TO 12 HRS, WHERE I WAS HUMILIATED AND MY JOB PERFORMANCE CONSTANTLY QUESTIONED. THERE WAS NEVER A DISPLAY OF GRATITUDE SHOWN FOR THE HOURS AND WORK PUT IN TO HELP THE STORE'S 40+% INCREASE.
AFTER A LENGTHY REMODEL, WHERE I WORKED NO LESS THAN 70 HRS A WEEK FOR 9 MONTHS, I WAS MET OUTSIDE BY AN ASSISTANT STORE MANAGER AND WAS CUSSED OUT AND SCREAMED AT BECAUSE
ONE PERSON (ME) WAS INCAPABLE OF PERFORMING NOT ONLY MY JOB, A JOB THAT COULD OCCUPY THE TIME OF 6, BUT THE JOB OF A LAZY AREA SALES MANAGER, RESULTING IN A BAD VISIT BY A DM. THE BLAME OF THE INCOMPLETED JOB DID NOT FALL ON THE AREA SALES MANAGER AND/OR HIS ASSOCIATES, WHERE IT SHOULD, BUT ON ME

Robert in Lancaster, California said: said: To all former Dillards employees,
I don't think you have worked retail long enough to have a clear understanding. There are some many things to consider in order to make it at Dillards or any other retailer. First, attitude is everything. Ask yourself,Do I have what it takes?,or Am I passionate about my job?, if you don't have neither you are in the wrong business. You also need to know who are your customers and understand your market trends in order to overcome any challenges. So stop blaming this company for your lack of success.

I would almost believe this..except there are FAR TOO MANY comments like this from employees i have spoken to personally, and on the net. Not to mention their stock price is plummetting. You may have to ask yourself: "Is this company's buisness plan a failure?"

My wife was just recently brought in for a second interview, and told she will be hired in 2 days. After researching this company, i told her that it's probably better that she passes this job up. I guess thats good for people like us that have an option like that..she just wants to work 'cause she gets bored. But, for those who need employment, i feel for you if you work at Dillards.

A-hole, Dillard's is okay as a part time job. In fact, part timers are more successful there because they don't have to do all the stocking and markdowns the full timers do so it's easier for them to meet their sales goals. Plus, they usually work the prime hours. If she chooses to work at Dillard's, I recommend the cosmetics department (if she can get in). Then she'll also get lots of free makeup, too!

I wouldn't recommend working at Dillard's period... not even part-time. And, especially in cosmetics...

How about their home addresses? I've got a couple of sacks of flaming poo with their names on them.
