And I've worked for some pretty crummy places in the past, too.

I started working at DG in late July, and I'm already on my way out. Bad management abounds in this place. The manager complains about Corporate constantly, but is their little lap dog. She keeps telling me that the store has been through a lot of crap, but doesn't tell me what.

I think the problem is just her bad management skills combined with the ridiculous expectations from corporate. In the few weeks that I've worked there- 1 assistant manager and 6 or so employees have quit.

But that's not what I really want to vent about- I want to talk about my own personal experiences there. I saw a sign on their door saying that they were looking for experienced stockers and cashiers. Having worked for 6 months at Target before- I figured that I qualified. Now, what's important to note is that I do have another job at a school- a job that relates more to my college degree, and a job that pays $10.64 an hour. But they don't operate in the summer, so I was basically unemployed.

I handed in my application in June, and I KNOW I put on that application that I was still employed with the school. I didn't get a job offer right away. The manager told me that they had enough people, and that if they brought me on, I'd only be working 5 hours or less a week (so why was there a sign in the window asking for help?).

A few weeks went by, and the manager called me back and asked if I was still interested. I said I was, and she told me to visit her so that she could give me some papers. I did, and it was one of those conditional job offer things that you have to fill out on the internet. She told me to wait until after 5 to do it because she'd have to get the system set up for me to do it. I waited, and it didn't work. She was gone for the next few days, so I couldn't do it then, either. Eventually, she called me back and said that I could fill it out now.

Then, I had to wait even more for that information to be sent back. When it did, I was called, and the manager asked me to come in (with the outfit on- yellow shirt/black slacks) a few days later. I wasn't doing anything, so it was fine, but I also didn't have any yellow shirts or money to buy one. My older sister ended up buying one for me, and was a little angry that I was asked to come in right away (little did I know that this was going to be a major problem).

I went in and sat in that stupid little break room for 3 hours watching their training videos. I was told that after watching them, I was going to be able to train a little bit, but when the videos were finished, I was told to leave. For two weeks, I was never put on the schedule. When I would talk to the manager about it, she would say that they just don't have the hours.

Then, a person was transferred to another store, and I was allowed to finally get some hours. I was told that the hours would range from 10-15, but they quickly shot up to 25- which was fine with me.

During the beginning days of work, I quickly found out how crappy they are. The first day I was on the register by myself was also the first day I had to close. When I went in to work the next day, my manager told me that I was being too slow (Really? I was NEW.). The AM was always complaining about the SM, and for good reason. She told me that she found a new job, and put in her 2 weeks notice over 3 weeks ago. She had also requested to be off on the weekends, and when she saw she was scheduled for a Saturday, she just left and never came back.

For a few weeks, my SM was constantly in a bad mood and bitching about how stressed she was. She once got on my case because I had a cash pick-up (this store has the managers count out the money and take it to a safe), but then later apologized because she was "stressed."

She then got super angry with me later.

I had assumed that she, you know, LOOKED at my application when she hired me, and saw that I was still employed with the school, and that I would obviously be returning, so when I went to talk to her about the schedule, she got really angry with me because I "didn't tell her I would be going back." I was stunned by the sheer idiocy of her comment that I just didn't say anything. She told me that the school would have to work around my DG schedule, but that's impossible since I work with a student the entire school day. Besides, even if my school schedule was flexible, DG doesn't even post their schedules until Friday afternoon!

So, the manager told me that I probably wouldn't be kept on as a worker- which at that point was FINE BY ME. I mean, I understand that employees need to be flexible, but this manager- she will change the schedule suddenly and not notify you. She's come up to me while I was working, and has told me that I need to stay an extra hour- never asking if I could, just saying I had to. She even got angry with me once because another employee said they wouldn't be able to make their shift on one day, and she tried to make me come in on that day- which was my day off and I actually had things to do that day, and told her I couldn't come in.

Twenty minutes ago, I got a call from a manager at DG, and I just let it go to voice mail. They're telling me that I need to come in early, but I'm not going to.

I mean, honestly. This is just a horrible place to work. The store is usually a mess, the customers are mean as hell, the co-workers are typically exhausted and they just quit because they don't want to deal with it anymore, the pay sucks- one of my co-workers was even screwed out of money from her paycheck last week (and she's been there 5 years!). The managers are pretty racist.

If you have no life whatsoever and enjoy working your butt off and being exhausted all the time for min. wage, then this might be the job for you.

Wow! You asked Dollar General for a job, and they generously gave you one. And now that you don't need them anymore you talk negatively about them. Dollar General is about "serving others". I wish I could give that manager a hug. Good help is hard to find.

Generously? I applied for this job back in June, In June, I was told that I would be hired, was officially hired in June, but didn't start working until late July. I've been talking negatively about them about a week after I was hired because of the non-work and constant excuses I was given. I just happened to find this site recently.

I have nothing against the job itself, but this manager is constantly saying one thing, and then changing it the next minute. When I went in to look at the schedule this past Friday, I asked her if everything was actually going to be over in August (which is what she told me), and she suddenly got mad at me and said that I had never quit. When I explained that she told me that I wouldn't be able to work past August because of the new work scheduling system they're going to get, she backtracked and told me that I "misunderstood;" that I would be able to work there on the weekends (and essentially never have a day off between DG and the school). But since I was given more hours at the school, I went ahead and quit.

Don't assume I'm some horrible worker. My manager likes me, and once she realized that I wasn't going to just leave the school for DG, she tried to work with me, and wants me to still be there. Don't preach at me about "serving others." I know what the environment is supposed to be like. All of my jobs have been in fields that serve others.
