I started working for DG in October of 2009. Just before Thnaksgiving our third key was fired due to a failed drug test. I was immediately offered the job and promised benifits and a pay raise plus full time status. Now it is January 3rd 2010, and I have no raise, still part time in the system, working 39 hours a week, opening and closing with management abilities, and also did not recieve Christmas pay or new years pay, when I closed Christmas eve, and opened new years day. My boss tells me it's nothing to do with her. Really? Cause the DM never answers her phone for a month for me, but will go behind me a "tattle" to the SM that I am annoying leaving repeated messages on her phone. So withholding pay, letting someone work third key but not paying them for it, and not even getting holiday pay or full time status. I believe I will wait to be canned and take unemployment from these people.

I experienced the same situation as you....Was hired in July, promoted to 3rd key in less than 3 weeks and then waited for months to get my raise and employee status to change from parttime to fulltime. It wasn't until the asst manager told the manager that I was going to give 2 weeks notice that the raise was on my next pay check. But my hours went from 38 to 40 per week to around 33 hours per week so the pay really didn't change and they waited long enough that I was ineligible for the fulltime benefits, hence I wait for another full year for insurance. We had our parttime 3rd key quit without notice, leaving us to work open to close on our weekends. How beneficial for the manager....being on salary she gains 5 hours per weekend toward her hours and the remaining keyholders lose 4 hours by being forced to clock out for 2 one hour breaks during this period. I feel that being "on call" and unable to leave the store during this time we should be paid, since we are responsible for all voids and returns/refunds.

Trust me the breaks really aren't breaks when you are constantly being paged to the front of the store to either void a product or perform a return/refund, do cash pickups and other similar tasks. In October I was informed of MANDATORY shrink training that was 144 miles round trip for me to drive....transportation was to be remitted....my manager gave me 104 miles, (distance from store to meeting) and according to DM we were to be paid from the time we left our homes to our return. Well my manager worked in an unpaid break so instead of getting paid from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm I was only paid for 5 hours. As for the mileage check? I have yet to receive it and it is now 2010. I loved the general work don't get me wrong, but the company doesn't care about the employees and cares even less about what managers are doing or better yet what they are NOT doing. I say good luck to anyone wanting to work for DG at all.

I had an Interview On New years day Friday and I got a call on the after on Sat and the asst manager asked for my social and how far did they get with me in the interview and what did they asked. I asked her If I got the position and she said yea but it sounded like she didn't know and she told me their was a drug test and a background check to do first. I called today Monday and asked her were I needed to go for the drug test and she said that the DM was doing my paperwork. So how how long do you think I have to wait to be told go do the drug test?

It shouldn't be too long. If your are being hired as an assistant or lead clerk then you will fill out your paperwork online. They have to set up new hire packet and then will tell you how to access it. It has the background check included in it. You will have to have paper to take with you for the drug test and they will tell you where to go. Make sure you ask what the hours are, the one we used is only open until 2 pm. I don't work for them anymore, but it is a good company. There are some bad DM's and other employees, but that's everywhere. Good luck......

That would be the people directly around you, not the company. I personally trained 4 gay and lesbian managers in my time with the company. If you were discriminated against then file a complaint. The only time I seen anyone fired was when they screwed up, period. I screwed up, I got fired. It wasn't the companies fault.

I was wondering cause they made me fill out the I-9 and all the other paper work on the express hiring and I already took the drug test and now I wait after being told to check back Monday on the results of the Background check. I think I may have the job, I will be a sales associate

You got the job or you wouldn't have filled out the paperwork for the background check, of course you would have to pass that (alot of people don't nowdays). All of that has to be completed and passed before they can work you. If you start on a Monday, it will be the following Friday before you get paid. They have excellent insurance also. Good luck to you and I hope you enjoy working there as much as I did.

We found out today that payroll is going to direct deposit and cutting out the paper checks today! some of us don't have access to a checking account due to credit problems and other reasons why make this change now does the company want to hurt the little guy busting his or her butt trying to keep there stores at model standard on very little pay and next to no hours? those who work less than 30 hours need that money to offset the cost of gas to get back and forth and to put what little money they get into their households to pay the bill's is it the companies desire to screw us over and save a little money in the process?i have to work 2 jobs and have a pregnant wife at home to support i need my paper check on a weekly basis and the cash in my hands is more important than a crappy piece of plastic that i hope would have my money on it when it was needed to pay the light bill ,put gas in my car or to get my wife the medicine she needed after the first screw up with payroll with this i hope that those in tenn. would see how they hurt the folks that they depend on to run those stores.

i am a key holder in a small town dg. since i have started there i have found that the manager NEVER works even close to 40 hours a week, and the assistant and i are constantly called in to cover hours. i also learned the the managers get very large bonuses. but in my case it is in fact the employees not to manage who deserve the bonuses. none of the mark downs get done, the day shift does no recovery. the girls working nights do all the work. i really think i need to file some sort of complaint, because the payroll keeps getting cut, but because she is salaried, the manager still gets paid and we are the ones covering her hours for her. she doesn't have to punch in or out. i can't believe it has gone on this long.

why does the company need to do a reset every year? last year when the new clip strip system when in we did new planogram setup's through out the store from what i seened the same changes we did last year are to be done again doesn't make sense to me why changes are need this quick .i work in a store that is consider a front to back but due to the property it sit's on the layout of the store can't be consider a true front to back and we experience problems with certain areas when we have map changes and event sale's if i was in charge of deciding what to classify this store as i would have made it a racetrack or something along those lines..our reset crew is due anytime now maybe the changes won't mess up the store any more than it is now..

Times are tough..but the reality is I am still blessed for what I DO have. Just be strong and smart about it. If it is what you enjoy do not give up on it - get in contact with the right people to make it happen for yourself. I was raised to know that "Misery loves Company". If you think about customer service - you are usually getting complaints and not compliments from them. :) Same thing applies to reading opinions of others. Just do what feels right for you and your family.

I just got a job with dollar general, I was offered minimal wage, at full time status, with possible promotion, due to my years of retail expereince, but, im scared. I dont want to take this job, unless i am paid for my expereince, is the manager telling me the tructh i wonder, maybe i should just pass the job up. im worth more than mininim wage

Yeah, right. Paperless. Then why am I still receiving an envelope every week with my earnings statement containing a blank check (stating "This is not a check") on the bottom stating how much was deposited into my account. So much for "paperless". WTF.

I was a store manager with Dollar General for 2 years. I was hurt with a steel cage; I am on crutches for the rest of my life. I have to have special shoes built. I have developed RSD due to the injury. Let me tell you what a wonderful company Dollar General claims to be! I had to have my cam walker replace in March. My lawyer had it approved; I went down to the ortho place to get my boot and arm brace. The specialist but the boot and brace on me and I was going out the door when the receptionist called me back. She said, I’m sorry but Dollar General is refusing to pay for the boot and brace. I had to take the cam walker and brace off. I watched the specialist put gloves on and dig my old boot (I had to tape it closed) and brace out of the trash bin and put them back on me. I was so mad, and mortified. I cried for days. It took me four weeks to get the walker and brace. I still have not got my shoe. I worked 80 hrs a week sometimes; I took a store that got robbed every 3 months. No one else would take it. This is the repayment I get for doing my best. I won my case and still am fighting. Please, Please think twice before going to work for this company.

You want the good and the bad. The good of Dollar General are the customers and the few faithful employees that are left at DG.I have seen employees fired for not smiling, but then I think, we all have bad days. I have seen employees who are slower at the register then others, let go because their basket size was not high enough, and for anyone that worked at Dollar General knows that means your stealing. Not!!! Let me tell you my story and you decide if you want to work for this company.

Nope, not from Hickory Hills. I'm farther north near O'hare. Haha, but now you've got me interested...

I was finally make Assistant Manager in August of 2009. At the beginning of this year I had a review done and was supposed to get a wage increase...that still hasn't happened and we're in April. No surprise. What is a surprise is that they apparently changed the anniversary wage increase. If I'm not mistaken it was a quarter after every six months. A coworker of mine confronted payroll and just about everyone else and found that they changed that rule in February of last year. Why is it that no one found out about this? And how can they seriously think anyone would want to stay with a company that can't even afford to give hard workers fifty cents a year.

On top of that, they don't even give stores enough payroll to run correctly anymore. I take back my comment on how there are always two people in the store. Now we spend the first few hours of the day alone and then from about noon on we have two people. And then they complain when things aren't being finished, freight overruns the backroom, planograms aren't set on time, customer connection shows poor results. How are you supposed to run a store alone and keep carts in the corral? I just don't get it.

I think the DM goes by monthly hours, because I got a phone call from her saying I have to shorten my hours by 4 or 8 or whatever, which means, I have to either work those hours alone, or fill in those hours and send someone home early. I know it stinks, and I tried giving my staff as many hours that were available without hiring on new people that would have shortened their hours.
More $$$ in the DM pockets in the end.

Having been a store manager for Dollar General, I can say that even though we had a matrix schedule, my DM often told me what to do and write it like I had done it. I agree with the lady who said run not walk from Dollar General.

Ronnie Salinas in Washington said: Im a 3rd key and my DM has threatened to terminate me due to my basket size. I've been with the company 3 years and have never had any problems...

I don't think that's right but I guess it's how many counselings on your average basket you were given. I'm pretty sure three counselings is a write up and I don't know how many write ups of that kind would equal termination. The best thing to do is suggestive sell. The way I do it is make conversation with people while I ring them up and hint at products.

Honestly, as a key holder I'm not on register much and I rarely reach the 50 customers it takes to be circled. You could try aiming for that. One thing to make sure you point out is if you had more than fifty customers, were more than fifty cents under the average, if you also had refunds that day that'll lower your average basket. I would look back for that. Your manager should be keeping an eye on that also and s/he should be backing you up if you're a good employee. Don't take crap!

you cannot force people to buy items they don't need or can't afford. that whole basket size counceling is a crock. with the economy the way it is, people need to rely on the dollar general stores for there prices and convenience. in the small town i am in, the grocery store has outrageous prices because they know people will pay that or travel 30 minutes to the nearest WalMart. Thank goodness for Dollar General, it is handy and affordable. But no on wants to be persuaded into buying things they don't really need.

I have been working at DG for a little over a year. Within the year i have seen so much crazy stuff happen. The asst. manager got transfered and a couple of weeks after she left our SM got fired. All of this happened around May. The middle of June our DM quit. We have been running our store for the last couple of months without a DM, a SM, or an Asst. Our store now looks like crap. DG is taking their sweet little time in bringin in some one to fill these spots. They keep telling us that they will have some one there in 2 weeks. I'm starting to get really frustrated. Cause the store is going downhill. Then I just found out that everyone I work with is making more money than me, even the new hire. Everyone is making at least 8 dollars but i'm only gettin paid 7.50. I have been working at this store longer than everyone except one girl. Who do I talk to about getting my pay increased? I am currently in training to be a 3rd key and i feel that i should be getting paid more than the new people that have just come in.

How is it you are in training to be a third key without an ASM or SM in your store? Do you have an ASM or SM on loan at the moment? I would suggest contacting your acting SM or DM for resolution of that concern.

We do not have a loan SM or ASM and the DM quit. The other 3rd key (who is currently in charge) took the initiative to train me because she needs help. She is working 14 hr shifts and only having one off day. She tried talking to the regional manager about the situation but he will not give ger a good answer. He keep saying he will get someone to come soon but it has been over two months and we still have no one. Last i heard he was looking for a ne DM but i dont know for sure.

Would you by chance have your store number and district/region numbers? I would also suggest reaching out to other stores for help and perhaps looking for you district training SM, they are usuallly DM's in training. I'm sure there are lots of ASM's foaming at the mouths for a shot to come be an acting SM.

You have to remember that your regional manager has got ALOT of stores to manage so the louder you guys are, the faster you'll get help. If I was in your 3rd key's shoes I would contact every store in the district asking to borrow ASM's. Just getting two yes's for a few days a week would make all the difference!

Please post your store/district/region info or pm it to me and I'll pass it to my DM when I see him in a few days. Also have your 3rd key email your RM and their boss with the same mail so that it can be put on record with HIS boss.

I commend you for taking the initiative to help out, i'm sure the 3rd key is grateful. Unfortunatly they would not be able to get you a raise, but the RM should be able to backdate that I believe. I will say that the problems are in all retail companies and if I were you I would stick it out. Hard work and the willingness to help out in a time of need will get you somewhere. Take the advice of calling other stores, or even a neighboring district and speak with that DM. It is a team effort, you just need to put the request out and don't stop until someone listens. The regionals are always quite busy and they are also used to people "whining" and may not understand how serious the situation is. Good luck to you......

My husband, who works an average of 16/7 managing a store. The greatest bargain at DG is their ability to acquire dedicated store managers with decades of experience a college degree, at poverty level salaries & overwork them. (to prevent paying hourly wages.) It takes a keen corporate eye to recognize their advantage over employees, who've feared or felt the sting of a distressed job/employment market. Keep opening those stores! There's still a lot of unemployed folks desperate to buy their own bile colored shirt & exchange their dignity for your bread crumbs. No more holidays planned with family either since you're only closed ONE day a year and I think it's probably Easter??

Bravo! You put the company culture across in a nutshell there! That is literally what you get as a DG store manager. Actually it's even worse at DM level - then, you never sleep at all, since you're on call every single second of your entire life.

The mentality is work them till they quit then fill the position and start all over. The retail stores are run on approximately 140 per week. In this, the stores will receive a minimum 1000 piece truck which every week which is to be "door to floor" in 2 days. Stores usually operate with a manager, an asst. mgr. a 3rd key and 1 or 2 part timers. Many complain of store conditions but there is little to be done when most times only 1 employee is working. Waiting on customers, running register and getting frieght up. The working conditions are horrible, not only at the store level but also in the field. I DO NOT suggest DG to anyone looking for a retail position. Sales have fallen consistently for the past 2 years since the new CEO [name removed], (who's claim is to be on the top ten executives with great golf handicaps who's company has the worst performing stock and sales. [name removed] who is in charge of store operations who has bankrupted the last 3 companies she worked for. With this kind of ineptness who would expect anything more?

Regardless of supposed sexual harassment or dysfunctional company culture, no matter what company one works for; there are laws and policies as well as social and professional "givens" in this the 21st Century. People on all levels of employment need to educate themselves and take and make a stand against any actual or perceived violations of law and/or policies in the work envrionment. Any company who does not practice, operate, and implement from a modern corporate culture perspecitve, is doomed to fail in the long term.

GMA_Nae in Somewhere In, Iowa said: Wow....Having been unemployed for 6 weeks; I was offered a part time position with DG in mid-July and gladly accepted what ever hours they could give me. I was offered 3rd approximately 3 weeks into the job and it being full time with a raise once I had completed my training I was excited. Here we are into October and I am working fulltime still at status of parttime and the raise? Well I have given up on seeing that anytime soon....especially since I started doing research on DG and most of the forums have very negative forums and very few positive experiences. This saddens me since I love what I am doing and I love working with my coworkers.....I am truly torn....do I continue to work for a company that has no regards for good employees and live on a shoe string wage or should I find employment elsewhere and turn in my keys?
Man this forum and others that I have found in other websites has become soooo discouraging.....Any suggestions?????

yesssss! start looking! wordt company in the world.....

longtimemgr in smalltown said: I have been with DG for more than 15 years. Although it is a challenge, it is not a bad job. It does depend on the people you are directly under. If you go in as manager, then do something to change things. I have always been told if you aren't part of the solution, you are part of the problem. I know there are some bad managment members out there, but there is also a survey on peoples receipts. If people will call and give honest remarks then maybe something will be done.

True that across the board! Commimitment and Creativity sometimes goes a long way!

My way out didn't materialize for the time being i have to stay to pay the bill's there's nothing in the way for a job here for me to apply for but if you have better option's in front of you take it and run like hell in the long run you'll be better off don't get trapped like allot of us did lousy hour's,DM's That don't care and constant manager changes and staff turnover i started out a stocker and went to one extreme to another at my store mostly get stuck on a register now a days really don't do that much stocking anymore only reason the customer still come in at that location is because of me they need to see someone familiar they had told me that much ! my store has a high shrink rate the district manager knows that but yet he doesn't let us solve the problem the way it needs to be done we know who shoplifts and if it was up to me i would put up a cork board with their pictures on it with a banner overhead saying banned then have them all arrested ''sign warrant's against them all''that would make a point to everyone that lives's in the surrounding area. my current manager like all the other's has his hands tied and not able to kick butt and take names to those that steal and cost the store money.if you remain with the company good luck to you and may god have mercy on your soul......

Did you violate SOP ? if not you have a case against the company and for the employee that didn't call in that's in the companies eyes is a no call no show and is terms for termination if that assistant manager isn't following ''sop'' report it to the regional if you have his or her contact info plead your case with him or her before you take legal action you might get your job back i've been through 2 managers and now on the third the last violated SOP and was terminated the one before him was fired for a reason that wasn't proven and was thrown out of court for lack of evidence and the company was sued and settle out of court if you still want to work for the company call and talk to the regional manager before you do anything else.. hope that helps you in the way you want...

DGDM in Irving, Texas said: I have worked for DG for 2 years.I am a District Manager. I have never worked for a company that berates and uses their employees such as this.

I accepted a job offer in Jan.2011.I was to be trained as an assistant manager. The co-manager at the time, highly recommended me for this job,to the manager, and also the DM. So I got hired. With in a week or two of being there,my hours drastically changed.
Last monday,I get a call from manager with good news, and offers me my assistant manager job.I worked one week, with all manager capabilities. Two evenings ago,he calls me an tells me,that another person will be coming in as assistant, and I no longer have my job as assistant.
In his office on Friday,he said to me I was "incompetant".He said "I have 2 types of employess. One is the ones who have limitied hours, and the others are ones who don't know what they are doing.

I followed up on his statement, and he says to me..you are not stupid by any means, but you know nothing about the job.Well he knew that, but in the week I had worked I busted my butt working anything and everything for him.And he knows it. The manager & DM had a meeting without me being present. When I got the phone call telling me I was being replaced after onlt a week,I asked Shawn what he told DM about me.He said it was not important. My staus if I choose to continue wroking with DG would be a part time associate.Or I could quit.
During the week I had worked,he made many condesending remarks to me,and I actually confronted him about why he was so rude, and treated people like they were stupid. He said,Gee..I did not realize it,but its the way I am.
He told me,he did not want me to take initiative on my own,as he wanted to make sure it was done his way. This has been such a sham. I have opened a complaint.I was wrongfully demoted.

evidently you could not perform your job duties correctly and maybe you juse weren't what he thoght you were capable of. Unless you have had several years of retail management experience, you probably weren't up to par. I have hired people that I thought could catch on and jump right in, but, alas, it usually doesn't happen unless they have prior experience. ASM is a big job and it's not easy. My ASM is my right hand, my assistant, my reminder, my "secretary" LOL, she knows everything there is to know, which encompasses a HUGE list of things. One can usually tell in a week or two if they can cut it or not. it takes a strong team to run a good store. Sorry, hate to burst your bubble.
