GEICO has developed a system where they can trim staff and yet appear to be hiring at the same time.
My mother has worked for GEICO for over two years as a customer service rep. GEICO does not want to be seen as needing to cut back, that would make people think twice about using them as an insurer. What GEICO is doing instead is playing games with call center performance metrics. When they need to trim heads, they become extremely nitpicky about what the reps say on the phone.
Most recently, my mother has been failed on calls for saying "no problem," for her voice being "too loud," or even for apologizing to a customer. She has been failed on calls for not hounding customers enough to keep their policy even though she has in fact offered all assistance. All of her co-workers here in Poway, CA are complaining about how nitpicky they are being right now. Recently a customer service rep who has been with the company over 20 yrs was fired for "failing" call quality standards.
GEICO needs to stop the dishonestly and deceitfulness and just call it what it is: GEICO is making adjustments because 2009 sucked for everybody.
The sad part is, they are starting new training classes for new reps, of which they are hiring less and/or paying less. They are willing to tarnish the reputation of their employees with involuntary dismissals just because they don't want to be seen as having layoffs.
