You know it's nice to see people wanting to work on a farm. These days it's 'just buy your food quick at the store'... especially for those who live in the concrete jungle of the city. If something were to happen in the food industry where all the processed food is contaminated, they'd have no where to go, no food to eat. It already happened recently with dog food. Growing your own food gives a person some freedom, responsibility, and an inner fulfillment of providing for yourself. There's gonna come a time when we can't buy or sell without conforming to being tracked by the higher authorities (it's already being done with Verichip, Onstar, Brinks, & Digital Angel), so it's best to get some land and prepare to grow food for your families & friends. I've tried hydroponic gardening and it works pretty good with the right nutrients. Just saying that it can't hurt, but only benefit you to be prepared for anything.
