I'm surprised you wrote that. I had always heard they paid well and gave great benefits. Have things changed or did I get bad information?

Thanks for sharing that, Wendy. One of the unique things I had heard about Google is that they provide their employees with meals for breakfast, lunch, and supper. On the surface, that would seem like a very nice perk, but maybe it is an enticement to get their employees to spend some very long hours at work?

Indeed, by NOT leaving the office building because of onsite services (doctor, laundry etc) you'd spend more time at work. Google even has a massage program to help tardy, tired and sore employees become relaxed ones. Sounds like a sweatshop huh?

Salary is low. But you get both stock option and 0 cost base Google stock unit. 401 match about $7500. Bonus base is about 15% multiply by a factor of both company and your performace. In recent good years, the factor is 2.

Ok, When you say that salary is LOW, it must be compared to something. What is this relative to?

I have 10 years of experience on software internationalization. Google offered only $20/hour for this position. It was insulting. I don't need free cafeteria meal, I just wanted real salary.

Software developer interns get paid $34/hour...Plus relocation expenses.

I'd imagine that full timers get more than interns.

Ph.D from top CS depts are Google's favored candidates. (They are more likely to carry their student lives to stay late). That group usually get good deal. If you have 10+ years' experiences, you could get 20K less than market pay.

Just to let some of you know, Google DOES pay well for certain people. Two years ago, my husband went to Google, he started at $200k a year, plus bonuses of about 25%. Even though it's a lot of money, we still had to pay ONE million dollars for a crappy little 1500 square foot house in the area (we came from Virginia, where a million dollars buys you many houses!!). Also, the relocation package was not as good as it could have been. However, that said, he is the happiest he's ever been at a job in his life, and that's what's important. Oh, also, I don't have to work anymore :)

I don't know what level he is...
He is a computer guy, not management. He writes and codes - computer stuff.
They basically stole him from another very large computer company where he had many years there.

Sorry I wasn't clear. I had a phone interview. The guy talked about the benefits etc. It appeared the base salary is rather low for the positioin but he mentioned you would end up making close to 100K. He mentioned it depended on both personal performance and company performance, but I'm curious how it could be that a big difference.
