The average starting salary is at least $.25 above minimum wage. Where I work I started at $8.50/hour. Depending on the store/state, this may vary.
Bonuses are generally earned through selling ESPs (Extended Service Protection plans) and the SPIFFs from these plans. There's also a Christmas bonus. Managerial positions have opportunities for more bonuses.

Travel requirements are only for managerial positions, mainly store manager positions. Other than commuting, there is no need for clerks/cashiers to travel. Managerial positions are required to go to Company Meetings, and Assistant Managers may be sent to other stores for training.
The main perk for employees is the 20% off any purchase via the employee discounts. Keep in mind that this discount may NOT be used in conjunction with coupons and/or other discounts. Employees may also be entitled to free lunches during big sales or other various special occasions.
