Harrah's Has a high turnover in Haughton, Louisiana 60 months ago |
Two years ago I applied for HR position employee threw away my resume in front of me. When I called Harrahs to tell them what I saw they took their employees work and had me eveicted from all of Harrahs properties. I am going to try and get them through the bbb, consumer affairs etc. watch out they are always hiring and letting go if the person is not intimated by you. |

That is pretty serious. Someone tell us what does "intimidation" have to do with getting a job? Perhaps this individual WAS attempting to intimidate the interviewer and got a negative response. Further attempts to intimidate probably is what got the individual evicted. Here is how I imagine the scenario.. The person is being interviewed and when politely turned down for the job, got belligerent, where the interviewer just trashed the resume to indicate that there was no way he/she was going to be hired. One should never try to intimidate or demand that a company hire you. |

That is not what happened at all. I did not get BELIGERENT for the simple fact that I was new here in town. Had been here for two weeks and was very open minded. Didn't evn care what the salary was as long as the position was HR. I was also on Television shortly afterwards because I was so professional and interviewed with 10 other companies was in my suit and everything. Here in the south it is a different culture and yes they were intimidated not because I made them but because I had an education, I am very pretty and I had the experience to back it up. Most people here in Shreveport are comfortable at doing nothing and getting paid for it. They fear someone else is going to take their position not that someone wants to work and is not competive. For I don't care what people know its how it is applied. And besides that I didn't say anything about my resume being thrown away to harrahs until after it happened. Two weeks later I went to another event and gave them a new one that one made it but then I was told that you have to know someone who knows someone and to start at the bottom as a housekeeper and work my way up. Thats when I really became annoyed and not beligerent because I owe no one anything. |

No one intimated anyone and here is the other thing if you look in shreveport why do they have such a high turnover rate? I can tell you idf I have education and experience then I am not going to start at the bottom no matter where I move from housekeeping to get in HR. NOT |

You don't make a lick of sense in what you wrote. Please define "belligerent" for me. I don't think you even know what the word means. I'll give you a clue.. it means something like thinking the interviewer is stupid and is intimidated by your beauty, education and experience and retaliating if they aren't. Or wait - is that haughty, conceited or egotistic? Darn, I am from the South. I just can't figure it out! |
|
Harrah's Has a high turnover in SHREVEPORT, Louisiana 59 months ago |
I make plenty of sense people here do not care that you are educated, that you have experience its about who you know not what you know. They are intimidated when you interview because of the fact that you want to work, you want to do a job and they are afraid because they think their job is not secure and you would take it from them. I was not beligerent and I have never even raised my voice or been nasty. It doesnot give any one the right the throw away your resume. If they are such a great company then why is it that their turn over rate is so high. Yes I have a voice and I wrote to the better business bureua, I contacted consumer affairs and I beleiev in standing up for what I believe in. I know what experience I have. I know what education to have and I also know that in California I had equal opportunity wasn't in a right to work state and people were not out for themselves and worried about replacement because they had confidence in their ability to do work. |

The interviewer was stupid after all had they didn't hire me. I know I am capable for doing the job and doing it well. Yes I am confident and thats because I have experienced the life outside of the dirty south or as they call it the good old boys town. At any rate I do not want to patonize church a company that works the way Harrah;s does and I do not want to work where the turnover is so high. Therefore, I am now contracting myself out and I am now in a position as the Exective Director of the Clifton Choctaw Reservation doubling my salary of what would have been at Harrah's and working at home. Its harrah's lost. |

They sure do just like I have a right to share my opinion on them and not do business wsith them and help others in making their decision by owning up what happened to me. I let them victomize me because they were afraid of me doing a better job then them. They still have a high turnover and I was blessed with a better opportunity. |
|

Yes I am one of their biggest competitors. This event happened two years ago at Harrahs. I am recently in this position. I am African American. I had never seen anything like this if someone has thrown away my resume it has been behind my back. Having come from a libral place I guess has sheltered me. It really should have been my decison that it was not a good fit and again I have never been beligerent. Just intelligent. |

Senior Citizen in Atlanta, Georgia said: Not true. That is a ridiculous statement. The decision rests with the interviewer, not the applicant. I have to say that if you do not have any clearer idea of the profession of Human Resources than that, it is most likely the reason you were not hired. This is why i always carry more then one resume with me that way if someone throws one away i have more to hand out , geeezz just move out of louisiannnnnna , there is nothing there anyways but you and your now file 13 resume , people in louisiannnnna have no homes now and you worrying bout dat resume , ever think GOD didn't want you to work there so he put the devil in front of you to eat your resume , shoulda just rebuked him and got the job ....lol ...love ya GOD BLESS ...JSON |

Its not a crazy idea. !st of all I moved to LOuisiana to be near my parents and they are retired . I do feel that here you can survive if you are retired and already making your way. Second of all as I stated that I was new here and it was a first attempt at looking for work. I went to a job faire I had several resumes at that job faire. I applied for several companies that I had experienced and frequented after my experience of them throwing away my resume service started to get worse. I wrote and complained. Had I not complained I would not have been banned. My attitude stems from why should I support, frequent or give business to anyone who is not worthy. Yes it was the devil but if you try the first time and do not succeed you try again and as far as I am concerned the first time that something does not happen you look at why what could have been done differently. So I applied again at another job fair and once I noticed that it didn't matter because I was told to get a professional job I have to start at the bottom in housekepping I knew that wasn't the company for me and it was an insult when I have the education and experience. It may have not been a good fit. My point in bringing this to everyones attention is that they have a high turnover rate and if you attend on bettering the company and growing with it and getting something back then Harrah's is not the place for you. |
|

Oh but it is true its their lost and my gain. For I am not a part of their turn over. I am about making a difference and I know what type of work that I am capable of. I know what I have learned and applied at several places ironically I have never worked in the south with HR but I have 10 plus years in Nothern California where you are not seperate but equal and constantly applying your worth recieving knowledge and giving it. To say I know nothing about HR I have a Masters Degree in Publkic Administration HR Management, worked at Hewlett Packard, Alameda County Medical Center, Gold West Technology and Seagate as HR GEneralst/ Recruiters and Executive Assistants in the HR Department. Did I mention ironically My bachelors degree is in Human Development because I watch why people do the things they do so we can learn from it so anyone with the high turnover rate like Harrah's needs help but they have to be willing to accept it. Obviously they did not and they will contuinue to be the worst place to work. |

Harrah's Has a high turnover in SHREVEPORT, Louisiana said: .. I am about making a difference and I know what type of work that I am capable of. I understand you are experienced and qualified but you are missing the details of the hiring procedure and that is (should be) a big part of the HR position in any company. Perhaps this will be clearer if I pose the situation in another way. Let's say a job opening appears in a company that YOU own. You are needing a person to do a job (whatever type). Do you bring the best candidates into a room and let them decide which of them should work for you? Or.... Do you interview them all and make the decision for yourself which one you want to hire? As for the banning.. I cannot imagine that you could be actually banned from the premises (even multiple locations) if you did nothing out of order. Your purpose here is to complain about a company that found you so distasteful they don't want you even as a customer. You are also now living in the South, arguing in public with an old Southern gentleman and calling us all stupid. All I am suggesting is that it is likely your attitude and possibly your misunderstanding of the basics of how one gets a job that caused your rejection. It basically is childish to let -the fact that one person threw just one copy of your resume in the trash- cause you to hate the company to the point you complain so bitterly they have to ban you and for two years later you can't let it go. It doesn't make the company "Harrah's" a terrible place. I personally don't believe gambling is a good idea so don't assume I am defending their business specifically, I am just stating general business practices and procedures here. |
|
Harrah's Has a high turnover in SHREVEPORT, Louisiana 59 months ago |
First and Foremost I am not childish and I am not arguing what I am doing is sharing my experience with others. I am standing up for what I believe in picking my battles and I stand strong harrahs has a very high turnover, and is not the place to work. Second of all it seems that you are rather closed minded and assumed your word would be final. How would you feel if i asked what is your position in all of this when you are elderly or senior citizen you should be working by choice and not because you have to. Are you an employee who currently works for Harrahs or did work and are standing up for their honor? If I owned my own company I would give everyone a chance and what you failed to realize Sara the person who took my resume at the job faire did not interview me. She took my resume looked it over and threw it away. I then went to another job faire and gave another person my resume and then called to verify it with the HR person that they had recieved it. They then took up for Sara and said that she never threw my resume away. Now back to the matter at hand I understand the sitution and I am not going to take responsibility for someone eles's ignorance she had no right to through away my resume. And if someone called the better business burua on you, the consumer affairs and the EEOC and you were wrong to cover it up and to have the good old biy sendrome since they arlready threw my resume away and lied about it why not also ad to to band me from all of their casinos in the world just to prove power. |

General Business Practices and Procedures here stink I have few choice experiences taht I chose to share they were wrong point blank and yes I am getting an attitude that I did not have before. The fact is they have a high turnover rate. They did not even chose to interview me a highly qualified individual. It was obvious I had the same experience that This person had and I could do her job. She said so when looking at my resume. She threw away my resume before even furting my chance and when I notified the proper athorities about her doing so I became a problem for speaking my mind. Harrahs is the one that needs to change not me. Am I still bitter? no I have moved on but that does not mean I have forgotten in otherwords you forgive but don't forget. Better yet if you had been in my shoes because you are from here you might have kept your mouth shut and moved on. I know nothing about southern politics- I do know right from wrong and in this case Harrahs was BLOODY WRONG! They don't respect their applicants or employees because if they did would their turnover be as high? |

I just quit Harrahs a few days ago. The reason i quit was because im dating some one they do not aprove of. I have been in and out of the HR's office for it and the managers office. They told me the reason they are having such a problem is because other people are making it that way. So rather than talk to the people that are causing the problem they come to me and tell me i have to choose between him or working there. Then they decide they need to know detail in our personal life. Im sorry that isn't any of their business. So I turned all my stuff in. Casino life is an alright place to work. As long as you can handle all the drama in there. They are good to your face but behide your back they are talking about you. The only reason i liked the casino if because of the players and a few people i worked with. Another thing about the casino they would tell my boyfriend that he could date me. Then turn around and tell me if i was seen with him they would fire me. |

NO you were not trying to sugest why I was rejected you were indignent on I am wrong. In fact you were trying to play the blame game and stick me with believeing that it was my fault and I should take responisbility when it wasn't. In fact didn't you say I should let go of what happened to me. Not be so bitter. In fact , givin the situation I have moved on and don't frequent Harrahs, will never apply for them they havea high turnover rate and are not a good company-END OF STORY. I even remember you saying that in LOuisiana peoplke are loosing their homes and their are betetr things to talk about. Well get your geography straight instead of arguing me down or trying to prove me wrong or bringing negativity which you did you should be taking a geography test. The only thing that Shreveporet, LA lost out in is that People from New Orleans migrated here where their already was no jobs. You couldn't go to job fairs unless you showed proof that you were a new orleans refegee and the same for renting houses and apartments. It was an act of God that their hurricane did and I don't blame the people for having to migrate here. I thought I told you to drop it case closed- you are not welcome. |

Did you meet him while at work? That could have something to do with it and itf you are hanging out with him after work but oin their property. I know that here you can not gamble where you work and some people may think its an inside job. Not that their is an excuse for what they did. |
|
harrahs in Windyville, Missouri 59 months ago |
Ya i meet him at work. They wouldn't let us hang out at work or any thing. They said its against the rules. But then I saw the lady that told me and her husband there at work also. He was playing and she was standing around watching him. You see people doing that all the time. People come in all the time with their husbands and wifes and watch them play or go out to eat with them. We are not aloud to gamble either if you work there. Then since i quit i have to wait 30 days before i can even come back on there. My managers told me it mostly is because the people I work with were making such a big deal about it all. WE are still going to go there some time and play but not that much. We rather go some where else now. We get free rooms all the time to different casinos. So we are just going to try to take them when we get a chance. |

I agree and I can sympathize. I use to go to Harrahs and hang out with my mom in New Orleans for my birthday but because of this that tradition stoped. In some ways I am glad because why give my money and let them control my happiness. How are they enhancing my life making a difference. They obviously have a problem to big for me to handle and don't care about customers or employees. |

Actually, a casino can ban anyone at its own discretion, without having to have any reason at all. Most of the time it's because a patron behaves badly in public, disrupts operations, imposes on other customers, etc., but problem gamblers also ask to be banned from the site when they realize they have a gambling addiction. Or, former employees can be banned for any reason. No explanations are owed to the person banned, that's the law in this state. Also, I'm well familiar with the HR office here, I once worked for corporate HR for Harrah's. The turnover rate is mostly in low-paying jobs, like Food and Beverage, EVS and Housekeeping. That's why they once hired foreigners through an employment agency that brought them here temporarily for a few months, mostly foreign students on hiatus, and then kept rotating new groups through here. I don't know if they still do it, but the guy who was responsible for that decision is now the Hotel Operations Director for the El Dorado Casino in Shreveport. Employees point out on attendance, ten points and they're out. That causes a lot of turnover, too. As for this HR applicant, first of all, you don't write or sound like anyone I ever worked with in HR. The bar is significantly higher than what is portrayed here. If you had all of this done in front of you, you were either called in for an interview, or cold-calling the HR office. Either way, you must have done something to push the other person over the edge, because ripping up resumes in front of an applicant is not standard procedure here. At any rate, Harrah's is not perfect, no employer is. However, I lasted six years, and I know people still here who started the first day gambling was brought back to Louisiana. Employment longevity is based upon many factors, including wages, the nature of the job, the number of people who perform that same job, and most of all, the quality of the supervisor for whom the employee works. |

The only stated policy we had was that individuals with direct family relationships, i.e., husband/wife, mother or father/son or daughter, etc., could not be in direct reporting relationships with each other. A husband could not supervise his wife or vice versa. Otherwise, we had a lot of dating going on among employees, and employees with customers. You should have had an employee manual issued to you by Harrah's that addressed this topic. |

I still don't understand where they got him and me dating was wrong. It never changed the way I worked. I wouldn't even wait on him. He would come up and talk to me for a few mins if I wasn't busy but other than that we never talked while I was working. |

The thing about employee manuals is that they're pretty much worthless. Truthfully, they provide employers with ammunition to use against employees, but employees have no legal expectation of the employer to follow those same policies. Here's why. With the exception of Montana, every state has passed what's called, "at-will" employment legislation. The employee serves at the will of the employer, unless there is a formal contract drawn up between the employee and the employer that states otherwise. The same arrangement is what allows employees to freely and voluntarily terminate their employment with an employer, so it's a two-way street, but admittedly, the thumb is on the scale in favor of the employer. Employee manuals do not constitute employee contracts, and the employer is free to disregard policies stated in these manuals, or to selectively enforce them, as unprofessional and morale-reducing an exercise as that would be. The only prohibition that exists is if they do so based on any of the protected classes under Title VII, that is, race, religion, gender, etc. That would be pretty hard to prove, but if you could prove it, that would be grounds for an EEOC complaint, if your actions led to your dismissal, or forced you to resign on your own ("constructive discharge"). It sounds like someone just decided to give you a hard time, and unfortunately, that's perfectly legal, unless based on discrimination stemming from any of the protected classes. Harrah's is so big that going from department to department, or property to property, supervisor to supervisor, it's like working for a totally different company as you move along. That's why it's better to try to transfer to another position or property instead of just quitting, unless you want to leave the casino business altogether. |

Actually, No it did not happen like that at all-it was during Katrina in Shreveport. I went to a job fair and I had not done any code calling or interviewing. It is the good boys attitude and the only thing I did wrong was complain about service and what happened to me. I am from corporate america in the bay area where you are promted by merrit not who you know or again because someone is afriad you will replace them. |

One of the worst mistakes people new to this area of the South make is to have an obviously condescending attitude towards the people native to this area, just because of the demographic and cultural differences between where they've lived and Shreveport. It may be possible that the attitude about Shreveport that you appear to have as reflected in your statements here became all too obvious to the interviewer when you applied for the HR position. I've lived here over 20 years. BTW, I'm from New York City, worked in the airline industry at JFK and in Oakland, CA (lived in Berkeley), then the casino industry via Atlantic City and Vegas. Most of the people I worked with, with some minor variation, followed the same route. Many worked outside the country. Eventually, they ended up here. The people who interviewed you didn't just get indoor plumbing last week, know what I mean? Nobody down here cares how people do things "Up North, on the coast" or anywhere else. Much the same way as people in those geographic areas think about Louisiana (if they think about Louisiana at all). They did there what they now do here, so your arriving on the scene complaining about good ol' boys and blaming them for your lack of success doesn't change the fact that you didn't sell yourself effectively enough to get hired, especially considering many of these individuals are "Yankees." Many of us from outside the area have consistently found employment in our respective fields here, and your argument doesn't work in the casino industry.

Its just the opposite the attitude was deveoped after I experienced the things I did. For instance my parents are from here not me. I came in Professional , smiling and networking. It was suggested to me to try housekeeping and work my way through at the same job faire. I was insulted because my experience does not lie their. I did absolutely nothing wrong. As soon as the indivdual looked at my resume she said and I quote :oh you have the same experience as me. The only way to get a job in Hr is to wait until someone dies or get to know somoeone who is retiring. too bad I'm not doing either. I walked away in shock and I tried other companies. When I walked away I saw here throw my resume away. I did go to other job fairs after that and give my resume to other recruiters because I had never experienced such a thing. People here down south accept anything in my opinion and yes I refuse to settle so if I have an attitude so be it. I wouldn't recommend for anyone to work at Harrah's and I know its not a reflection of me. Example I have high expectations and I know my worth. This weekend my a company from Shreveport came to spray my house. My appointment was at 11:00 at 11:15 I called to see where they were and a month ago with their 90 day service which didn't work they were a half an hour late. I complained and my land loard asked me if I wanted to move because being from California I am too high maintence for him. Again I think its down south-good old boys because you are from California have self confidence and have experienced life and are culturally different you become the scape goat for you have already told me I am benith you and I had to do something . I am in the wrong which is a pre judgement and a wrong statement. |

You're the one who has to live in your skin while you're down here. I'm just telling you that by the sound of it, you're going to have challenges while you're here unless you change the way you come across to people who have something that you obviously want, be it a job, housing, whatever. Principles are fine, but they don't pay the bills. A piece of friendly advice - - get a dictionary and spruce up your grammar and punctuation. This is not meant as an insult, just a suggestion, especially if you are in a management position. Although people say, "y'all" and "fixin' to" down here, the business environment still demands impeccable writing skills from its managers. I don't know if your position in the Bay Area demanded the same, but I assume you either were more careful there, or someone in your office edited your communications. If your resume contains the same errors as your posting here, that might be another source of your problem. Good luck to you. |

Harrah's Has a high turnover in SHREVEPORT, Louisiana said: Its not a crazy idea. I'm sorry, I'm not trying to be rude to you but from reading your posts..I find it hard to believe you are as educated as you say you are. Your posts have many grammatical errors, incorrect or no punctuation and you don't really express yourself in a highly educated way. I'm not saying this as a put down..I'm saying it because maybe your resume reflected this and that's why they weren't interested. There are many places (too many) where it's who you know and not what you know. |
