Are people dressed in business casual, jeans and t-shirts, or full-on suits? Do folks get together for Friday happy hours and friendly get-togethers?
What is a typical day in the life of an employee at IBM?
Almost forgot. As far as "get togethers" depends on the group. Some managers and teams enjoy being around each other given that they work about 60 hours a week. Or I should state, people are piad for a 60 hour work week. Some work a lot more and some less. Anyway, managers usually sent the tone for the group. Some managers get together and have outtings. Others are too focussed on their on careers and do not participate. Same holds true with individuals.
A typical day in the life of an IBM employee goes something like this. Meetings, Charts, Action Items, and Emails. Which is followed by scheduling a Pre-Meeting to discuss details and talking about the details in the Meeting. Spending hours creating charts and presentations, followed by receiving Action Items to redo the data. Then end up answering 100 emails a day.
In a more granule level, it is not easy to survive in the IBM ork environment. The shear girth of the company is complex and it is hard to figure out how things work and who is important. The company is extremely buearacratic and rigid to get anything accomplished. Most people think of IBM offering cutting edge products and fosters an environment that induces creativity. Quite the contrary, the company has too many systems that do not share a commaon interface. Data has to be pulled from 3 different systems and dumped into spreasheets and manually worked. Not to mention the politics. You have to be politically savvy to survive in IBM. As with anything in life, timing is everything. Being at the right place, at the right time, will lead to success within IBM.
