I've been reading this forum and getting a lot of good info. I got the call a few day's ago and I'm going to Houston on the 12th of October to inprocess. The job I got hired for is Admin Specialist. I just left Iraq a month ago and I was over there with LSI. So I'm just introducing myself if anyone has questions feel free to ask and I'll do the same:-)

Well at first he was fine and as time go on he calls me very tired and says he has not been sleeping because drills at 4am every morning and then today he says drill or what ever you may call them. Says the camp is not run by us anymore not sure what that means?)) I said well we agreed if you dont feel safe, you come home...he said I almost did! That scares me! Just wondering if anyone knows anything about this camp?

mellypryor in Fort Worth, Texas said: Hey James~you seem to know alot about over in the Middle East can I ask you a question? Have you ever been or heard of Camp Kandahar In Afghansitan? My hubby was suppose to go to Bagram and then when he got there they took him to Kandahar. Well he seems to really hate it and says he has already almost come home! He can't tell me anything as you know. I was doing research on it and that camp is not run by us! Just wondering if you can shead light on it? Thanks Melly

Camp Kandahar is a descent size camp. I just left their a few months ago. They always run drills between 4 am and 6:30 so it is really hard to get sleep after working 12 hours a day.

The US military is still running the camp. They have moved alot of their tropps deeper into afghanistan at a couple newer camps. Along with the move they took alot of the recreational stuff with them.

Yea hes not allowed to tell you much over the phone. He cannot go into any specifics.

I have been a IT Supervisor for 5 years now which allows me to get online pretty much anytime i wish to. All of my bosses are back in Houston and up in Arlington Virginia where the bigger KBR is located.

Keep your head held high though. It is a great opportunity for him over their. The stress will be great sometimes but you just have to push through it.

spawn in Katy, Texas said: so are you saying that 500 truck drivers are getting killed every month? also where do you get your "facts" from?

My facts are coming from the Death certificates which my office sends out to all the familys. My facts are coming from the amount of people currently over here. I am a IT supervisor and our office deals with all computer information currently operating in Afghanistan, Kuwait, Iraq, Dubai, Germany, and Africa.

We deal with the stuff which isnt very "heart warming" Im the lucky one who gets to notify next of kin and go thru miles of paperwork everytime a convoy is attacked which has our KBR employees in it.

Thats where my Facts come from

James, I'd also like to put my email out there to ask you a few questions about the IT aspect of KBR. The demand, the expectations, etc... I'm currently a Director of IT for a hospital here in Houston and have been keeping an eye on these forums for a few months now and have seen a few other members in our same field of IT. Your input and recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advanced.

I worked for LSI for 7 months but they are definently not a company to work for. The pay and rules are pretty much the same as LSI is just a subsidary of KBR. I was ready to leave LSI so I pulled some strings to get a kbr job. It's all in who you know when it comes to getting hired with contracting. It's really good to network while you are over there because you may meet someone that has the pull to get you hired on with a different company.

Do you hear which camp you go to before you go to Houston or do they tell you at processing?

- Was this comment helpful? Yes / No Reply - Report abuse

THey may tell you a camp during the processing but that may change after you get to Baghdad. My husband was told he was going to Camp Anaconda during the training but when he got to Baghdad they told him he was assigned to Camp Delta. He was there for 10 months then told he was being moved to Camp Echo for a few weeks till new plumbers came in. That was 5 months ago and he is still at Camp Echo. He finally had them permanently transfer him to Camp Echo so he could have his personal property shipped to him.

So don't plan on anything until you get where they send you.

melly, is your husband still miserable? It cant just be the 4am wake up can it? are the people that he works with o.k ? and what is the work like? I know that he is a journeyman electrician, has he got men under him?

I have not talked to him since yesterdays morning call....but that call was not a good one! Ya, he has some men under him but that camp only has 3 electricians, so not alot. I think that is why they kept him there) I wish I could talk with someone that has been to that camp before. Hopefully he will make it just fine for 4 months and then he can put in to transfer. Thanks for the concern.

Top 3 Camps Currently in the Middle East:

Camp Anaconda in Iraq They have EVERYTHING their and its the biggest camp.

Camp Kandahar & Bagram in Afghanistan are the other 2 bbest ones.

They tell you where you will be going in Houston however for alot of people that changes the minute you arrive in the middle east. Their are so many camps in so many different countrys currently they transfer like crazy.

KBR recruiters tell you to wait 120 days for a transfer however if you have the qualifications they will transfer you within a few days.

I have personally seen food service workers go into the Security & Logistics field just because they wanted a transfer out of the Kitchen.

Kitchen is the worst paid job for KBR but its the easiest. Yea its a 12 hour shift but 7 of those 12 hours your relaxing in the air conditioned mess hall watching tv on a huge screen TV. Theirs a little grunt work but hey its not that bad.

Summers are HOT HOT HOT getting up to 140 sometimes. Winter in Afghanitsan is beautiful. Your guaranteed a white christmas pretty much. Oh yea and that Fabolous Bonus KBR gives out every christmas is worth it all! That $10 phone card!! I almost cried with excitement! (they need to give money)

Alot of stuff will be changing once Logcap 4 starts up and everything. Pay rates will change and everything probably.

KBR wont hire any IT personal until you go thru Houston. They offer you some sappy job then once you get to Houston they promote you to the IT field. They have always done it that way. KBR promotes within the company very well to.

That is not always true about transfers or promotion within KBR. My husband is a Master Plumber he was told by recruiter that he would start as a regular plumber but as soon as he got to Iraq he would be a plumber supervisor quickly. He has submitted for supervisor jobs during his 15 months in country and he has received e-mail stating someone with more qualifications got the jobs. Right now at his camp their new Plumbing Foreman is a Bosnian that speaks little English and knows nothing about plumbing and no license. But they pay them 1/2 a American plumbers pay. It all about their profits and nothing about qualifications. KBR promotes who they want it has nothing to do with skills or licensing.

Thats because KBR can employee middle easterners for 1/10 of what they have to pay a licensed plumber from the states.

He is also in Iraq. They have been slowly moving everything into Afghanistan. He recieved an email from KBR? why in the world is he applying on the KBR website if hes already in IRAQ. All he has to do is contact HR in IRAQ and he can get transferred within a week. Ive seen hundreds of people do it that easily.

They havent released anything on if they are shutting it down. I will be over their in a few weeks doing some upgrades on their communications interface.

More then likely they will just put you somewhere else. It all depends on what your job title is and everything.

They are getting more and more middle easterners to work for them because they can pay them alot less.
