Was he in Dubai by the 20th? If so he should have a check sometime today. His check would be for 8 days. |
|
mellypryor in Fort Worth, Texas 44 months ago |
Don't think so....I think he left here at 4 then was in Atlanta by 9pm and then dubai was like a 16 hr flight.....but they told Curtis that his time started when the plane took off from Houston? |

Debbie can you tell me about R&R? My husband said his supervisor told him yes you only get 10 paid days but you can take 16 and unless we were really hard up for money it was worth the 6 unpaid days? |
|
switch in Austin, Texas 44 months ago |
How many days R&R can you have in the year before you have to pay taxes. I think you have to stay out of the country 335 days ,is that right? so the 3rd R&R is on the new year ??? |
|
Debbie Creery in Gatesville, Texas 44 months ago |
First check will be deposit on the first Thursday or Friday of each month. First check will be there if your spouse was in camp 10 days prior to last Saturday of the month. If they arrived after that check will be the following month for partial days and the month of October. |
|
Debbie Creery in Gatesville, Texas 44 months ago |
Yes that is correct but please give yourself an extra day or two due to possible flight delays, missed connection because if you aren't back in Dubai by midnight on your 16 day you will be terminated. My husband usually schedules his for about 14 days so he has a couple days if something comes up on flight issues. |

Debbie Creery in Gatesville, Texas 44 months ago |
To keep your tax free status for the first $87,500.00 you must be out of the United States for 330 days from wheels up date to date you return to U.S. at end of contract. The IRS starts their count from wheels up date. Hope that helps. Debbie |

So their 3rd R&R is on the new year? it must be because 3 trips of 16 days would be over right ? |

He left Huston yesterday |
|

my husband is in food service he makes far less that 87000 but does not the 330 day thing still apply |

millied in Raleigh, North Carolina said: He left Huston yesterday Did you ever find out anything about the camp he was going to ?

|
Debbie Creery in Gatesville, Texas 44 months ago |
From there wheels up date they can take 3 10 day R&R and be under there allowed 330 days in country, with 5 extra days they could add to any of the three R&R's. If they used 16 days each time they would be over the allowed time and would owe taxes on all money. |
|
Debbie Creery in Gatesville, Texas 44 months ago |
If he left Houston yesterday he's first check should be deposited on October 30. |
|
Debbie Creery in Gatesville, Texas 44 months ago |
The 330 day counts for anyone using the tax free IRS code. It does not matter how much you make in the year, unless you make over $87,500.00. |
|
millied in Raleigh, North Carolina 44 months ago |
They said they would give him a laptop. Is that the way he will commune with us solely or are there other means. Even so I hope he leans to operate the lap top fast. He was a man that never messed with a pc. But I know he will to reach his family. |
|
switch in Austin, Texas 44 months ago |
I am just not getting this, i must be having a brain freeze. They get R&R every 120 days right so the 3rd R&R is after 360 days. That is the beginning of a new year of not being in the country. So theoretically speaking why cant they take 16-18 days and then take the 3rd R&R in the new year. Does anyone get what im saying, its all very confusing... |
|
Debbie Creery in Gatesville, Texas 44 months ago |
The IRS counts days from wheels up date to end of contract not January thru December. So if your husband's wheels up date is Oct. 1, 2008 and his end of contract and he returns home is Oct. 1, 2009 he would only be allowed 35 days in US during that time. Does that make it clear. It is very confusing. It will probably be helpful to find a tax service because you may have to file an extension until he reachs his end of contract or pay taxes on money earn in 2008 and then file an amended return to re coup the tax free money. I have probably confused the issue with all that. Debbie afscme3920@aol.com |

Just a bit of information regarding the taxes. One thing they do not inform you of is that your taxed money (should you go home before your 330 days) is prorated. The number of days you are out of country is divided by 365, then multiplied by your earnings. For example. You earn $50,000 and are out of the country 350 days, your excusible tax will be $47,945. Hope that helps a little bit on paying taxes. |

You are in Baghdad? how are things out there and what camp are you on ? |

Hi Kim81, I was in the Green Zone (USMI-Central) for 4 years, and Ms. Sparky also worked there for a number of years, and Prosperity is located there, that part is right, but Liberty and Victory are not located in the Greenzone. They are in Baghdad, but in a totally different area than the Green Zone. |

What exactly does the Green Zone mean? |
|
Ms Sparky in Portland, Oregon 44 months ago |
Kim81-Baghdad is a very large city of over 5 million people. There are a lot of FOB's in Baghdad. The Green Zone is not an FOB. It houses the US Embassy, The British Embassy, The Canadian Embassy, the Iraq Government. It house numerous company headquarters. US Military Camps, It houses the headquarters and bases for just about every member of the coalition forces. It houses the USAID, the UN, the FBI. When I was there we had probably 5000 Iraqi's living in the Green Zone. Hope that clears it up. Kiki78-Did I leave anything out? Ms Sparky

Ok, it's not really something to go back and forth about and I understand that you guys were there in the past. However things change, I just left a month ago and FOB Libert/Vicory is considered to be in the gree zone. Also it's true that Liberty and Victory are two different fobs in two different locations, I was simply saying that they are a (very) short ride away from each other and both Fobs have bus's that go back and forth to each other. |

Ms Sparky in Portland, Oregon 44 months ago |
"What exactly does the Green Zone mean?" It's what is now called the International Zone. Most people just still call it the Green Zone. Everything on the outside is call the Red zone. You can Google Earth it. Just look for the Tigres River, Republican Palace and the US Embassy. I can actually see the trailer I lived in. You can see all the camps. This is why the whole cell phone thing bogus...they don't need cell phones to zero in on the camps. They have Google Earth. Here is the location in the "Green Zone" IZ of what I refer to as "The Traffic Circle of Death" I'm sure Kiki78 remember this. 33degrees 18' 07.92" N
Just use Google Earth. Ms Sparky

When I got there people didn't know how to use a traffic circle and everyone was driving every which way. It was one of those "cross your fingers and hope for the best" intersections. They may have taken it out since I left. It was dangerous. Ms Sparky

The rough and the smooth
Having said that, life here is not so bad for many American servicemen and women, even if almost all of them are working 7 days a week, 12-24 hours a day, and you can forget about having a day off. Still, soldiers and Marines will tell you, there are three different kinds of people -- FOBitts, grunts and MiTTs -- and some have it easier than others. A FOBitt lives and works on a FOB (Forward Operating Base). But they're not all that "forward." There's the International Zone (the "Green Zone"), Camp Victory and Camp Liberty. The International Zone may be the safest place in the country, with more security per square inch than the lobby of San Francisco's Hall of Justice. Camps Liberty and Victory, which are immense, also have tons of security, along with helicopter landing zones and thousands of pre-fab buildings where troops and contractors live, eat and sleep. Many FOBitts never leave base (called going "outside the wire"). The biggest gripe for many of them is that they get too fat from eating all the great chow in the mess halls. Apart from the occasional mortar round they're probably safer than if they were living in some parts of Oakland. A grunt is armed and prepared for combat. Life isn't so grand for them. They exist in harder, often more squalid environments, living in tents or in buildings once used by the Iraqi army. While FOBitts enjoy surf and turf at the dining facility on Sundays, the grunts mostly dine on MREs (Meals, Ready to Eat) or Iraqi food, or pre-packaged this and that. Grunts go on patrols, get shot at, hit with IEDs, chase down insurgents and such. They are the most likely to get shot or bombed. |
