The conditions are not a bad as they were in 2006 but then it depends on the camp. But as a plumber you will not be leaving the base and although there are occasional mortars dropped most don't hit anything. My husband is a plumber also and has been there 16 months. He says you have a higher probability of dying on the highways then in Iraq. Debbie |

This is maybe for Ms Sparky or anyone who is familiar with the other well known overseas contractors. My daughter works for KBR and is in Iraq right now and due to come home for R & R in a few weeks. What have you heard about CSA in Kuwait? Rumors are that ITT is taking over and CSA lost their contract?

LOL I waited about 2 months after I submitted my app online (truck driver) before I got a call. I was surprised, and excited, when I got the call. I'm tired of the available job selection around here. |

Know what you mean.. employment is down, my company laid off half of the people already.. our US jobs are going overseas.. Everyone "please, please, please" vote!! |

Is it true that you're more likely to get a fatal bite from a camel spider than you are to get blown up? |

Mixer Mike in St. Petersburg, Florida said: Is it true that you're more likely to get a fatal bite from a camel spider than you are to get blown up? Ha, ha, Camel bites are not fatal. A Brown Recluse is MUCH WORSE. Getting blown up depends on where you are stationed at. There are a LOT of camps that hardly EVER get hit. Loyalty (D-8) last year had 1100 CONFIRMED inside the wire hits from mortars, rockets, rpg's, etc. There have been deaths of soldiers from sniper fire at that base also. Just 4 1/2 miles away at Victory our nickname for it was "Camp CupCake!!" They hardly ever get hit (except for forty rockets that killed several soldiers 10 or so months back. There have been people who would rather de-mob than come to Loyalty because it is that bad. Seen full grown men start crying because of the fear. Cannot say i blame them. No one is. It was a difficult place to be and not everyone can handle something that intense and life threatening. Do NOT WORRY ABOUT CAMEL SPIDERS :-) Spray painted on the door of one of the soldiers buildings at D-8 "Do not fear the bullit with your name on it, fear the mortar addressed to sender." Sorry if I made you nervous, but you need to understand that THIS IS A WAR ZONE. Mark |

crazedchef in San Antonio, Texas 44 months ago |
Hello again, Proof read my reply, hope I did not freak anyone out. At LOYALTY we called Camp Victory "Camp Cupcake." It is not easy being in Iraq or Afghanistan, but for the rest of your life you can say "I DID THAT, I MADE A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF OUR AMERICAN SOLDIERS." Mark |

The Marines are bringing them back and they are now being found in the deserts areas of Camp Pendleton and 29 Palms. Saddam's revenge....the invasion of the camel spiders! Ms Sparky

I just thought of a good question, if anyone can answer it like soon, cuz I'm leaving 10am tomorrow to the airport. How much does it cost to come back to the U.S. on your breaks? If the company pays $850 towards the ticket, what is my cost? I'm thinkin of just hitting up Germany or some place covered under their portion. |
|
Debbie Creery in Gatesville, Texas 44 months ago |
The last ticket for my husband was $1560.00 from Dubai to Houston. |

My first post here.... I will be flying out for processing tomorrow and Im not quite sure what to expect. I worked for KBR for two years in Kosovo and there were only 88 ExPats there. I have taken a job in Iraq and starting tomorrow at the hotel, I will be blogging every night to let you all in on what goes on at the Processing Center. Hopefully it will give you all some insight. My advice for anyone who is going to work for KBR... Be smart, Political and PICK YOUR BATTLES!!!! Ciao!

After reading TSA's site, it looks like you're not allowed to wear a jacket onto the plane? I've never flown before, so its all new to me. That Paris Hilton role model chick...LMWAO! I cant tell you the actual base pay for a Carpenter, but I am guessing you would probably be making 7500 to 8500 a month, Maybe a bit more. But remember, You are not paying taxes, that is huge. to take home 8000 dollars a month in the states, you would have to be making like 13,500 a month. |

No that was a two-way ticket. I just meant that he flew into Houston, ticket prices vary depending on where you fly into. KBR will charge you more for a ticket then you can get a ticket for thru travelocity, cheap tickets, etc. KBR will also take out of your check for the full cost of ticket before you fly out then you will get the $850.00 back on the check with your R&R pay. Debbie |
|
Mixer Mike in St. Petersburg, Florida 43 months ago |
R&R pay? They pay you for the R&R's also? |
|
Debbie Creery in Gatesville, Texas 43 months ago |
You will get 40 hours pay with no uplifts. Debbie |

I don't think so. It is also very expensive to stay in Dubai. |

You are allowed to book your own flight and pay for your ticket. But you must realize that if for some reason they are unable to get you to Baghdad and Dubai on time it could cost you a lot of extra money for a change ticket. If KBR purchases the ticket they will make it good. My husband has had 3 R&R, we purchased one ticket ourselves, and the other two KBR purchased. We found it a little more expensive for KBR to purchase tickets but we did not want the stress of making sure that he got where he needed to be on time. The sandstorms can wreck havoc on flights. Mt husband once had to spend 10 extra days in Baghdad waiting for the sand to quit blowing so the plane and copters could fly. Hope this helps. Debbie |

millied in Raleigh, North Carolina said: what is labor base rate Except for new electricians, Drivers and may Generator Mechanics, I believe all labor is still at $2583 Base + uplift. Foreman is more. It works out to be about $14.90/hr without the uplift. That would be Labor Foreman, Carpenters, Plumbers, Welders...I think that's it. For those that are over there. Is that still the rate? Ms Sparky
|
|
Debbie Creery in Gatesville, Texas 43 months ago |
That is the current rate. Net pay on a 4 week check is about 6,000.00. |

Uplifts depend on what location you are at correct? So the more dangerous the more you make right? But does the extra amount of uplift really justify the added danger? To figure the take home pay you take the base salary and add the percentage of the uplift? |

All of Iraq and Afghanistan have the same uplift. 75% on the first 40 hours. Evidently KBR figures the remaining 44 are much safer because there is NO uplift on that at all. I know there have been several class action suits about the uplift issue. Not sure if there is still anything pending on this or not. Ms Sparky

If you are in Iraq or Afghanistan the uplifts are 75%. In Dubai you get 5%. Not sure about uplifts in Kuwait. If your base is $2853.00 you will receive $14.90 per hour worked with 75% uplifts on the first 40 hours worked each week. After SS and FICA taken out your take home pay on a 4 week month is $5873.78 and about $7653.69 on a five week month. Works out to about $17.25 per hour after SS and FICA taken out. Debbie |
