blessed2bme in South Eastern, Michigan said: I think what Gabi meant was that she was setting this up on her computer with a Houston area code so her hubby could call. To use it from Iraq, they would need a computer that is hooked up to internet and phone service...at least that is what I got out of reading here and on the magic jack website. So the short answer would be no.

I think I am going to set up a cell for me with a houston area code...I work 24/7 on call plus my office hours but my work week can't exceed 36 hours total so he could waste a lot of time trying to track me down...like he does now, lol.

Jill, if I understand what you are saying, he could use a calling card to call my pager (who has THOSE anymore right? lol) and leave me a number to call him back at? Then I could call him from my cell? That may be cheaper all the way around...

blessed what type of work do u do?

Thanks for the tip on this. how long have you been useing the phone this way, any problems so far?
Isabel

I have used for for my friend in germany and for around the states since november last year and had no problem with connection. Haven't tried it with hubby yet, just changed it to houston.

DOWN SIDE IS: if power goes out then you can't use that phone because it runs through software on you computer.

I set it up because my daughter is coming to stay with me while her husband is deployes. We would be fighting over the phone and I would have to pull MOM rank on here if both the son in law and my hubby called at the same time. Just saves alot of fighting :-)

For whoever is curious about the WABI test questions, this is a copy of the email I sent Patrick earlier....

Hey Patrick,

The test is pretty lame. They are going to ask you the same question over and over by rephrasing it. Your answers should be consistant with your previous answers. They want someone who is not willing to sacrifice quality of work to save time (even if it means missing a deadline). Safety is the top priority when regarding any project or routine work. There is a question that asks you if you would like to go sky diving? or bungee jumping? The answer is no. Even if you have before. In emergency situations, they want someone who reacts, and may even take charge, but calls for assistance. They want leaders, but not control freaks. They want someone who does not loose their temper, and can ignore other co-workers tempers. They want you to be willing to accept a new challange, but be happy doing to same exact job day after day without any changes in routine. Regarding vehicles, they want you to be overly cautious... leave early,so you dont have to speed..... keep your distance from aggresive drivers... dont try to get even. They want you to be punctual, or even early to work.
Some of the questions will not have a good selection for answers. You just have to pick the lesser evil. Keep these rules in mind when answering all of the questions. Safety, Quality, Puctuality, Team Work, (in that order)
Hope this helps.

The bow season in AR goes from Oct 1 through Feb 28. But the rifle season is only a couple weeks long, and ends after Thanksgiving. My kids are old enough to gun hunt now, but not old enough for bows. (they practice, but not hunt) In Georgia, the gun season goes from mid October to January with a 12 deer limit. Arkansas limit is 3 with firearms. I refuse to buy beef from the grocery store.... Ar sucks.

I am working on the cell phone switch, Verizon is not being very helpful. We just got cell reception last december in the sticks here where I live and it is through an altell tower. Does not seem to matter that altell and verizon have merged. they are giving me grief. Unfortunatly those are the only two carriers here. So I just keep hounding them. :-)

Best way to get the cell company to switch your area code, is to tell them you are going to be doing contract work in Houston. Or, if you have more than one phone with them ( family plan) tell them your child is going to University of Houston. They should still give you the new area code anyway, but lying will save a lot of hassle.

Still in awe and pleasantly pleased he was able to call me. I have promised not to worry if I do not hear from him again for a while. I have mentally built myself so as not to panic, U know giving him a 48 hr window, before I do begin to panic.

Gabi, I researched the magicjack after it was posted on here. It seems a good deal if hubby can get internet service. Speaking which I am glad he didn’t get talked into a mac before he left Houston. One of the guys in his group who bought one is having all kinds of problems with.

Tstrom, I understand what you are saying as far as it being safe. Its just that there is so much news coming out of there–Bagdad region. I realize there are likely issues elsewhere.

the bad news about baghdad region is in downtown green zone VBC is the airport its basically on the edge of town on west side. he prob will be here at the BTC in another couple hours

It's a little different this time. I was already in Houston when I processed before, and my recruiter gave me the Hotel info.. etc.
This is strange not communicating with the recruiter for this info. Waiting for someone else to email me or call.

Telling me they can't do that because they don't have cell service in Houston. I 'm like, hellloooooo my cousin lives in there and she has a cell with you. Its our rinky dink town of Libby, want to keep everything here. or I should say, Kalispell, we don't have a Libby or troy number with verizon. sigh, told ya I live in the sticks.

On cell phones, I already have one for work (their contract so can't change the area code) so I don't have my own phone. I have the teenagers on prepaid so I can add money at will and not pay for it when they aren't allowed to have them, amazing "currency" with teens. Anyway, what time can they usually call? Alltel has a prepaid plan with free nights and weekends that's only $.75 a day. It's what the kids have had forever and I really like it...I think it would work out cheaper than any plan I've looked at..still toying with the idea of just using my pager...just worried about how fast those pages actually come through....

times can range from 9pm central time, through 1 or 2pm depending how late they stay up.
Prepaid works good if you get one with a free night and weekend option. Plus, when you set it up you can choose any area code

Cell companies generally frown on the out of state area codes. Even though roaming is free to you, it costs them to use different towers. Normally, this is not a common expense to them for average users, so they offer it free. They are more likely to give you the # you want if you claim the phone will be used in that service area.

verizon now owns altell, I figure if they won't change then I don't need it. They can either change it or I will do away with it. Only reason we got cell phones was because hubby was driving log truck and I was in college. I am sure they will come around to my way of thinking.

Sorry cut myself off here,
the tower is now owned by both altell and verizon. so they don't have to worry about pinging of another tower.

Have a question. My husband was originally contracted for carpenter job but those went away so he has signed on as a concrete finisher. Anybody doing that type of job over there and any insight into what he will be doing, where he will be working, what he can expect.
Thank you very much.

Concrete finishers will mainly be building forms, pouring concrete, etc... for anything from Butler Buildings, to generator pads for Hazmat containment. Lots of night work during the summer, since the heat is a factor in the concrete pouring.

He should like the concrete deal. Its a smaller department.. less supervision... less hectic. He will still be working closely with the carpenters though. Does he know where he is going?
