Moprning and Hi Debbie, others who have signed on for a second or more yr. Dh is getting ready to call recruiter back this morning and there were just a couple more questions we wanted some of your take on before we–dh talks to recruiter. Debbie, I think this was ask of you before, your dh is on his second “tour”. When I was reading this thread in the early days of, there was mention that contracts were for approx 1 yr or so, and that if you wanted to sign on for a second term, you had to go all the way through processing in Houston again? There was even mention at one point of a 120 day wait, wherein you had to wait to reapply? I addressed this question to you Debbie as I know your hubby is in his second “term”–has been at this for 17 mth. But I would appreciate anyone insights on. Thanks

You sign a 1 year contract during Houston processing. At the end of your contract you go on your R&R and if you wish to continue employment you just catch your return flight back. There was no new contract and he did not have to return to processing in Houston. That 120 day thing and returning to Houston is only for rehires.

My dh left for Houston on Oct.26th. He left there, wheels up, on Nov.3rd. He originally was to be going to Bagram to work. When he got there he had 2 days of processing or whatever they want to call it and was then sent to Kandahar. He spent almost a week there and then was sent to Tarin, which is where he is now. He said he will be sent from base to base as needed.

As far as the food goes, he said the food in Bagram was good, at Kandahar he thought he was going to be sick. He said one morning he thought he was getting gravy for his biscuit and when he tasted it, it tasted to him like tacos. Well come to find out that was what they had for dinner the night before and as the saying goes, waste not want not, lol. Now that he is in Tarin, he sayes the food there is excellent! So I guess it is where you end up and who is doing the cooking.

As far as the weather goes he said it is cold at night. He can only take showers after 7 at night at the camp he is at and he dreads it because of the cold. I am getting ready to send him a sweatsuit to sleep in at night, along with some more knit hats.

Out of the 3 he also said Kandahar was not one of his favorites thus far and was glad to be at Tarin. He is getting used to everything and as long as you know that you wont have the comforts of home you will be OK.

Switch, Your hubby left out the same time as mine, he is still not at his destination yet? I thought of something else that might place him with you, he is one of the guys that had to wait for his papers because there was a hold-up on several guys becasue thier papers didnt get to the processing center with the others that Mon. morning, but they did show up.

R&R is 10 days paid you can take up to 16 days. This is what the recruiter explained to me. But can you take a longer R%R at the end of the year contact? If so how long before you have to go throught rehire status?

With the packet make sure you fill everything out in black ink. We were not told this and received an email today stating that all paperwork heading to huston needed to be filled out in black ink. Needless to say we had already filled most out in blue! I looked back over the forms originally sent to us and could not find that anywhere!

My hubby was told to type on the PDF file and email it back...its a huge packet

Hi Adam it is great to hear from you. I still have two more classes to take next week but I signed my contract already. There is a major backup here with previous class so I am not sure when I will leave. I expect maybe 2 weeks. I have been moved to the Hill but I have a roommate. I wanted my husband to come spend sometime with me but since I have a roommate I have to drive back home this weekend, which sucks!!!
Our class started with about 350, I think it is around 280 or so now, but I hear the next class is a big one. So it will be a hot mess around here next week. Medical went smooth, they seem to have a system that is working..get in get out. I am supposed to go to F1, but I am hearing I might be at the BTC for at least a week and then have to go to shared housing until I get a wet hooch. That sucks!!!
Anywhoo,I am meeting a lot of interesting people here. For those of you that are starting on Monday, come on down...;)

I'm scheduled for a November 29th arrival in Houston. I'm a firefighter/flight paramedic here in the States going to work as a medic in Jalalabad. I have a question on the physical. I've had a small umbilical hernia for 10 years, never a problem till now. I hear that a hernia can disqualify anyone in the physical. There are many different types and sizes. Does anyone know the truth? I also work in the ER/OR at the local hospital and such a hernia is a 15 minute fix in surgery. I would like to know if I need to get it fixed before Houston and before retiring my current positions at work. Thanks.

I know some people were disqualified for medical/drugs/dental. After medical the original class kinds of splinters, meaning if you have issues you may be held back or may sign your contract after you get clearance from dental/background and or medical. So maybe my estimations are a little off. But the contract signing class seemed a bit smaller.

I still bet they will process you electricians fast. They are desperate for you guys out there. When hubby was in Houston 2 weeks ago there were other people there for 2-3 weeks and they got quite ticked off watching the electricians come in and then fly out. I dont understand what went on at the DPC but i wonder what will happen on thanksgiving break.

Yeh,
But I live 30 min. away and with traffic that can be close to an hour. I am so afraid of unpredictable traffic issues that I don't like to go home on class days. If you miss any scheduled classes or do not come back from break and sign/scan in on time, you are out.

Hi, well dh did interview with recruiter this morning and had the conference call later in the morning. We are just awaiting packet via email. Seems as everything is moving ahead and fast. Fortunately for this site, there are very few questions left to ask. We spent this morning getting all the paperwork he needed gathered. I am a bit concerned by the news of the congestion down Houston way–Dh has made the decision that if need be he will depart before the holidays–Christmas. But I’d hate to see him get down there and be stuck in Houston–away from us over the holidays–while he awaits a flight over seas. Does seem as if they really need electricians– and there is plenty of work to be done. I am confused by the luggage weight allowances– 44 lbs for Iraq and 35 lbs for Afghanistan–but if they will not know till they get over there where they will be going??? I guess the safe thing to do is to keep luggage down to 35 Lbs–though told Dh he could always pull on layers.

Switch I am surprised your dh is still awaiting a more permanent assignment. Sounds as if they are really doing a lot of testing/ training once they arrive overseas before they cut em loose to an assigned camp. For those of you awaiting in Houston to depart. God’s Speed to you.
