That has only recently happened for the electricians. This has happened due to the many electrocutions of soliders and civilians due to poor electrical work in country. Most of the work was being done for years by workers with no licenses. It took Ms. Sparky and others families that lost a loved one speak out to or Congress to force KBR to do the right thing and hire people with licenses and now they have to come in a re do all the work already done. The other skilled trades never got the raises they were promised. My husband is a Master Plumber working under a Bosnian with NO LICENSE. I guess until the waste and water problems start killing people will KBR do the right thing. I can't beleive that our Federal Government would allow any company to hire employees in the skilled labor area that do not speak our language and don't have licenses for their skills. Maybe it will all work out and KBR and others will do the right thing. Debbie |

Ms Sparky in Portland, Oregon said: Yes...I have huge issues with the way KBR treats it's employees in Iraq and Afghanistan. You don't tell them the truth. I just had a friend process through Houston. For one, how about knowingly exposing employees and troops to sodium dichromate in Iraq and Afghanistan. How about, mismanaging the electrical work in such a heinous manner that soldiers are killed and KBR employees are injured. How about knowingly providing seriously contaminated water to troops and employees. How about holding rape victims hostage and not allowing them medical services. And the list goes on and on and on. Ms Sparky.. you sound like a woman that has nothing better to do with their time but be negative...there are alot of wives that get on this forum..and are already upset that their loved ones are over there..and you are just adding worry and heart ache to them...i dont understand your reasoning behind it.. who cares what you think..thats just your opinion...I know that there are ones over there that has been over there for 6 yrs..and all that you are saying has not happened to them... do you just call that LUCK??
thanks to debbie and switch and all the others that keep posting POSITIVE things...they are the ones keeping the wives calm..the working conditions are not as you are telling.. my husband has been over there for 2 months now...and i talk to him everyday...heck yesterday they were watching the OU AND TECH game on a big screen..

Leaving for Houston was one thing, leaving the country brings on a whole new set of emotions. I guess this week was kind of surreal. I spent most of the time consoling the kids and busying myself that I had not cried about it and dealt with it myself. When he called last night the kids were already asleep and after I hung up with him I completely broke down. I hear it gets easier though. To all those on here, you have been my backbone. Knowing that others have went through this and are there to offer support and answer questions for newbies has kept me strong. Knowing that if I have a question with something and I can turn here makes me be more supportive in my husbands decision. So thank you to all. |

It was one of the hardest moments of my life. I kept saying Are you sure you dont want to come home ? I woke up in the morning with a lump in my throat. Those first days i think we always cry and cry and question ourselves as to whether we did the right thing. So many mixed emotions. My hubby will have been in Iraq 3 weeks this Wednesday and it does get somewhat easier as long as i get my phone calls every day !! Like Debbie says you just have to stay strong and not worry them . It hard to do on the phone when your voice is quivering.. I dont want my hubby to worry about me, he has enough to worry about and get through> Thankfully we have thei forum to keep eachothers spirits up and hopefully vent on here as opposed to our hubbys. Take care and chin up. |

Well hubby just called from the airport and he flies out of there at 6:35 with a 4 hour layover in London then a 7 hour flight to Dubai. Switch - I am extremely glad that I didn't go to houston to see him off. I would have been hysterical and I don't even want to think about how that would of affected the kids! I just wish that I could have seen him one more time before he left the country. Oh well! It probably would have made it even harder. I also have to remember what he is going through and how emotionally hard it is on him as well. BethB05 - I hear you on the PMS emotions! I have tried to avoid listening to the radio and watching made for TV movies! Been getting my fill of Spongebob and Hannah Montana though! To those who already have hubby's there, Do they have phones in Dubai for them to at least call home to let us know they made it there? Or do they have to buy a calling card to be able to call?

Hello Everyone, My husband just finished processing and should have been flying out of Houston tonight, however, there was a problem with his LOA (letter of authorization). He can't seem to get any info about this, can anyone shed any light on this, what LOA and at this point what would prevent him from going, he has been through so much this week and to see everyone you just went through training with on their way is a bit difficult and worrisom. Any info would be greatly appreciated. |

He will have to purchase a 15 minute phone card for about $20.00 to call home. My husband called be this morning from Dubai on his way to Turkey for a 5 day trip. He wasn't able to get a full 15 days off during Thanksgiving or Christmas so we decided the cost was to much for only a 5-7 day trip home. He hopes he can get a phone card in Turkey so I will be able to hear his voice everyday till he gets back into Iraq. Debbie |

He didn't call me until he was at Camp Victory - that was a rough wait. He finally called me again today. He said they are in class all day learning about the British electrical standards, so I'm thinking it would be a complete waste of time for anyone to bring any US code books with them. He said only he and one other guy are going to Camp Speicher from Camp Victory - he said they changed everyone else's destination. About the "smoking" incident in Houston, he said they heard that they sent 61 guys home after redoing the drug screening. That's incredible! He said they hear Black Hawks flying overhead all night and also hear tons of gunfire - thank goodness it's a green zone. The food is good and he's trying to be careful that he doesn't start to pack on the pounds - although with their schedule, how could they? I'm anxious to get an address so I can send a care package - and he's incredibly anxious to get one! |

I have heard from other people that LOA issues can include name changes, misspelling of names, passport issues ( like expired, or numbers that are wrong). I am not sure how long it will take to clear up... maybe a couple days maybe a couple weeks. When dealing with the gov't you really never know. One guy has been here 6 weeks because of some visa issue. Good luck to your husband. I hope they clear it up fast so we can get out of here and start getting paid;) |

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum but I've been lurking for a while before deciding to register this is a great group "Curious then, recently you were mentioning Task Force Safe and it being a good thing. Should Tast Force Safe pack up and go home as well? Isn't the risk the same for any contract worker? Not just those working for KBR?" Oh and I get the idea that Ms Sparky is a disgruntled ex-KBR employee who got fired and has way to much time on her hands!! Hopefully you guy's ran her off this forum for good because her comments were really annoying and negative. Anyway, I'm due to ship out to Iraq this week, I've been here 3 weeks but the flight I was scheduled was missed due to the whole drug test fiasco that happened last week.So I'm hoping to be out of here by Thanksgiving. |

Morning everyone, Rluckins2, Welcome to the board. as jdc said, if you go back and read all the post your will gain a lot of info on what to expect and what to plan for. If you have any direct questions I am sure someone will be along to answer them soon. Debbie–how exciting for your husband. But is this normal–the restrains on his RR or is it just the holidays? I read somewhere else that it can be rough taking RR over the holidays–because like the post, everything is so congested and gets backed up. There was also something to the effect of the time of Spring break being another hard time of the yr. By the way Debbie is ‘hooch’ what they call their accommodations? That’s what we called them in Korea–I remember sending a pic of one–grass/ straw hut- like from the Korean Folk village as a gag–to my parents telling em that was our hooch. Wirenutts wife, know you and your hubby on are in my thoughts. Candybear, glad your hubby called! Wow, 61?! “ . . . although with their schedule, how could they?. . .” I wondered about that one myself, what with them working 12/7. Redbuddafly. Hope your LOA issues get resolved real soon. MsSorento, hope you catch your flight too. Switch, I agree with others here. After reading your entries it crossed my mind to go and visit him and see him off. But the idea that they are rushing trades through has made me change my mind–in that he’ll have too much on his mind already. And it would be too easy to beg him not to go. I like the way everyone is thinking as far as the 4 mth count down. I am trying to convince myself I can do that standing on my head. Is it working? Nope, but I am trying. But like you Debbie, I am grateful I have my 14mth old granddaughter to keep me busy too. Ok I am off this morning to see if I can find a good British Electrical standard book. |

Never had a problem with any other R&R's but he was temporary assigned and had to go on assigned camps tracking board 14 days during Thanksgiving. All was okay but then they permantly assigned him to new camp and Thanksgiving and Christmas were already taken so they said. So we decided not to spent all that money for a non holiday time and he planned the short trip to Turkey. After his supervisor returned he re checked the tracking board and he could have come home but it was to short notice to get the mess changed.

There will be a Special Investigative Report on CNN on Lou Dobbs at 7pm Eastern Time. TODAY!! Provided they don't reschedule. This investigation has been going on for awhile. Here's an excerpt from the CNN website. "Pentagon officials say the largest U.S. contractor operating in Iraq and Afghanistan is failing to protect the lives of American troops. This example of bureaucracy and incompetence has already led to the death of 18 soldiers. We'll have all the details in our report from CNN's Special Investigations Unit." Just to clarify...they are not referring to your husbands or family members personally. It's the company as a whole. Ms Sparky

It was my understanding that the US Contractors working in country were their to provide food, laundry service, move supplies between bases, fix plumbing and electrical problems with crappy structures they purchased from other countries, NOT protect the lives of American Troops. If they are supposed to be over their protecting the soldiers lives, I suggest training in Houston needs to be revamped and our contractors should be armed. I THOUGHT WE HAD GOTTEN RID OF MS. SPARKY !!! |

this is what my bf said about LOA: I had to get a letter of authorization too. Everybody does that travels through foreign countries. Its basically a letter from our government telling other governments what your intentions are in the foreign country. Basically someone forgot to file the paperwork at KBR which is par for the course for them. A couple guys from our group got held up because someone didnt file the paperwork for their common access card(CAC). In houston they make you stand in line like heards of cattle. Its kinda hectic sometimes there. They process probably around 1000 people a week and things rarely go smoothly. There is always someone getting left behind. One guy I talked to had been there for 3 weeks.... |

Okay so its becoming more real... my husband is just waiting for the travel itinerary which I have read in the post he may not get until just a day or 2 before he was told he was going to Houston (Dec 7).. I got a bunch of stuff yesterday (toiletries) ...I was at walmart and this older lady everytime I ask her how she is, she says 'Im blessed'..so as she was ringing up the stuff that my husband is going to take with him.. I just asked her if she would keep him in her prayers because he would be going overseas to work... she wrote his name down in a little notebook.. and told me to keep my chin up an dbe strong for my family... after I paid she came around the corner and gave me a huge hug.. and said i little prayer.. (mind you this is walmart...there was a long line of people waiting to pay)...I felt so good after I walked out of the store... so refreshed, energized and as I was driving back home there were tons of Christmas songs playing and instead of thinking that he was not going to be here for christmas I just felt like I couldnt wait to go and give him a hug.. so I got home, left the bags in the car... ran inside, turned on the radio and we began to enjoy the moment we had right then and there... then our little girl came out of her room and hugged her daddy and they started dancing to the song playing on the radio... so I know this is long but Im getting to my point... The lady at walmart reminded me of this forum and how unselfishly all of you are and how willing you are to make our experience a little better and to know what to expect... I would be a wreck if I didnt have you guys... and I know that when my husband leaves I will have you guys to read my comments and cheer me up...and I hope that I can do the same for others coming on board too... So during this Thanksgiving week I just wanted to said that I am thankful that I have you guys... Its funny, though we all have never met my husbadn and I talk about you guys ... |

Part 2: okay so this thing cuts you off ..(I guess I wrote too much) Anyhow so I was saying... as if we knew all of you personally... my husband will say... Actually Sparky has a point. KBR and the other contractors are there (paid) to support the military operation in Iraq. There is obvious complicity from all parties involved. This does need to be brought into public light so hopefully nothing like this ever happens again. To think that slip shod electrical work cost the life of US servicemen is sad to say the least. My problem with Sparky is that she served two tours over in Iraq but didn’t raise those issues up then. If these conditions were as deadly as she says (which they are) why didn’t someone as concerned about the safety of the troops speak up at once? It makes her seem a little self serving to say the least. I’m sure what sparked her outrage was being denied some kind of comp claim. Not to say what she is saying now doesn’t have merit or isn’t true. Her moral outrage is just a little hard to take considering she had an opportunity to do something about it while it was happening and took a pass. But as I said before this doesn’t make the issue any less important. |

The CNN story is based on KBR not providing electrical to military and contractors building on camp due to non qualified and license personnel. The have had 18 people electrocuted due to no grounds in shower units. Why do you think KBR recently is mass hiring licensed electricians and moving them through Houston in 6 days. It is CYA time for them before the military inspections show up at all the camps in country to verify that electricial work is up to code. This issue should concern all of our loved ones because I would be very upset if I received a phone call telling me my loved one had been electrocuted in a shower or washing thier hands, because no licensed people were doing the work. Please watch the story because this are the facts in country. Asked your loved ones what the ratio of American skilled trades is to Forgien National performing skilled trade jobs that have no idea what they are doing. Happy Holidays

Her negativity just get old when you are trying to be positive about the decision that you just made for your family. |

“Why do you think KBR recently is mass hiring licensed electricians and moving them through Houston in 6 days. . .” This was my assumption. I believe there have been other issues too–I recently read somewhere that third world nationals that are working in theater for the contract companies are no longer allowed to eat in the defacs too, -after four plus yrs of being allowed to--which I think has something to do with the contract companies and or military move to provide better protection for the soldiers–in reference to a horridus bombing in 2004 at a defac/ mess hall. An insurgent disguised as a security officer. I am happy with these moves to make things more safe for the soldiers and our hubbies. We do intend to watch the show. Thank you for the info. |

Sometimes i read things i really dont want to hear but i dont let it bother me i just put it in my little sack of information. Just skip over the posts that you dont want to listen to. I don't mean to sound mean spirited or rude, all I'm saying is that her negativity is counter productive to what I believe this forum is all about. If she wants to contribute something relevant and FACTUAL by all means I welcome her comments, however, it seems that all she has to offer is what it used to be like when she worked for KBR before they implemented changes. It is obvious that she feels she was mistreated by KBR, but that was then and this is now. There are plenty of current recruits and employees sharing their experiences in Houston and when they arrive in country that seem to contradict everything that she is saying. We have enough to worry about without hearing things that aren't true or have been exagerated to serve her purpose. |

Jjsymax, I understand what you are saying as far as what the board stands for–moral support, which I too, am grateful for. But everyone is entitled to their opinions–misguided or not. Not my place to judge. Albeit MS Sparks does appear to be on some personal crusade–my opinion, right or wrong–not my place to say--and ultimately, the special report that Ms Sparks was attempting to draw everyone’s attention too, is just another set of opinions, under the guise of a special report. Watch it if you will. The media after all–have their own politics and beliefs too–another opinion. |

I am with Switch, not to undermine things that are going on but at this point I am worried about hubby's flight and when I will talk to him, will he arrive safely, and if anyone else is like we are, we agreed that at the first hint of danger or anything unsafe he was headed home. The media does sensationalize everything and in my position right now the last thing I need to do is become an emotional wreck. We all are entitled to our opinions and the right to state truths etc., there is just a way to state things in a positive manner. We are all aware of the dangers and our dh's are or will become aware of some things that are not in the comfort zone for them. I can't speak for anyone but myself, we choose this path knowing that there were sacrifices and some danger involved, but did so in hopes that we provide a better life for ourselves and our family. So again as Switch says I listen but put it into the sack of info. So I am off to work and fret over when he will call, you are all in my thoughts and I too love to read the posts, somehow it makes it a little easier and you don't feel as if you are all by yourself.
