Debbie Creery in Gatesville, Texas said: Have your doctor write a letter explaing the meds to are either currently on or meds you have taken in the last several months and rhe reason why. Make sure that if the medical issue could be a problem in Iraq that they clear you for work. My husband had been on Darvocet for chronic back pain. It showed in his urine and they questioned him and he showed him his doctor's note and they passed him through. They did not allow him to take the Darovcet to Iraq so I took it home. Hope this helps. THank you, Debbie. The situation is pretty stupid-- Long story short, my doctor prescribed me an ADD medication which is a controlled substance. I'd never taken anything like it before and hated it, so after 3-4 days I stopped using it and saw him again. He said that I obviously didn't have ADD and probably needed to drink less coffee and exercise (what a way to diagnose!). That was about a month or so ago just before I got the KBR offer. He wrote me a note that basically said I don't have ADD, am not on meds, and 'am fit to work in a war zone'. My concern is bringing up something that may not/probably won't show up in the blood test. I mean, I don't want to be disqualified for something like this b/c I brought it up in advance of them asking about it. Should I not say anything unless they ask? Do they just 'fail' you without asking questions? What kind of medical forms do you fill out before the blood test? Final question- I got an email saying we go to the Hilton North, but it also sort of sounded like I would go there to sign in and then possibly get sent to another hotel... does everyone just go to the Hilton? I ask b/c my flight gets in pretty late on Sunday night. Everyone here is the best! Thank you for all your help! SD99 |

My Husband goes to the Hilton tomorrow and will be working in Iraq. He smokes and constantly asks me to find out through the forum if they allow smoking there. Do they? Also where do they go first before they reach Iraq, is it London, then Dubai, then Iraq.

If he has the room it would make for a good cushion cause some of the mattress aren't so good. Blankets are also in short supply. Debbie |

You can send them either way but it could be expensive with a larger box. They provide the flat rate boxes and they cost $10.95 or $9.95. I have sent both ways but if you have some over size stuff maybe a one time cost would be more cost effective. I have learned to compress small large items in small boxes, also take it out of the packaging will allow for rolling or folding to make it fit. Debbie |

You are allowed to smoke but they have designated areas at training building, as far as the hotel that will depend on his room assignment but he can always smoke outside. No smoking on plane or airports. Smoking once in country is okay in designated areas, no smoking in living quarters. He could be in Houston from 6 to 21 days, depending on the flights arrangements. And his flight could be to just about anywhere, London, Amsterdam then to Dubai. He could even have a direct flight with no stops. Debbie |

The questionerre will ask want meds you are currently on and I beleive it also ask about meds in the last 30 days. List everything cause there is usually not a problem if it is listed and it shows in urine. Everyone goes to the Hilton for their hotel assignments, they have a van that shuttles everyone around. From airport to hotels. Debbie |

SD99 in New Brunswick, New Jersey said: Not to seem dense, but then the BIAC/Camp Victory/HQ are all in the same place and not in the International Zone/Green Zone? I am having that problem with packages. You could use the spacesaver bags and suck all the air out. I went to the post office and they said a 20 pound box going to Tikrit Iraq would cost $32 priority mail. So i guess for the bulky stuff i will do that, its not so bad. Then i can use the flat rate boxes for the smaller stuff. |

Computers are a major issue, my husband has one but unable to get any internet service at his camp. Some of the camps have internet available and other do not. If they have connections it may cost you 80.00 or more dollars a month. All camps in Iraq I beleive have internet cafe's but they have few computers and everyone uses them. I would probably leave computer at home until first R&R and then you can figure out what works at your assigned camps. Debbie |

The spread sheet is set up on a $2000.00 base pay most of the people I send the link to are making much more then that so the numbers will have to be changed in order to have a correct amount.

He arrived there on the 21st. He seems to be adjusting just fine. The only thing he has complained about is the constant dust in the air, but he said he will probably gain weight because they feed him good. |
|
Debbie Creery in Gatesville, Texas 42 months ago |
Hello Coni, Glad you got him off now the adventure begins. It will be a very trying month or so. But just stay focus on the next 120 days till his first R&R and stay busy. Once he gets to camp and settled in you will be hearing from him regularly with his request for items to be sent. LOL Debbie |

Something else everyone should be sending to their loved ones in Iraq is the blue face covers they use in the hospitals. The sand blows all the time and there is bacterial infection in it. If inhaled they will become very sick with major flu like symptoms. My husband and many others have contracted a bacterial infection while in Iraq called Q-fever. I sent bandanas but they don't seal around the nose and mouth. Another item needed is nasal saline, the air is very dry and many begin having regular nose bleeds due to sinus passage being so dry. The saline also helps clean out some of the sand, etc. Think of the comfort items but don't forget the medical and first aid items either; e.g. daily vitamins, band aids, motrin, tylenol, anti bacterial cream, sunscreen. My compliments to everyone who contributes to this board. Thank you for all the great information. I had been in limbo for two months and finally got word that I will be starting processing on January 5th. Starting IF I pass the WABI tomorrow. I will be a procurement specialist and my recruiter says this position is at Camp Victory, which I believe is okay. Sounds like it would behoove me to check into the Hilton earlier rather than later so I don't get dealt off to one of the other hotels. The kit you get via e-mail is pretty comprehensive, but I will be so much better prepared since I got a major in LOGCAP right here. Thanks again and see some of you after the first of the year. |

I had a job offer from RECON International two weeks ago, but they wanted me to leave ASAP... jump on a plane to Dubai for processing... and offered very little information except that I would be working out of Kandahar, the pay would be $7,500 total regardless of hours worked - paid on first of every month, 3 meals provided per day, and 28 days vacation per year with plane tickets.
Oh well.... sure I need the work, but am not prepared to just jump off to Dubai then to Afghanistan with-out some questions answered first.
