So, how do your friends and family react to your choice to do this? I told my best friends last night that the hubby was gonna be doing this and they kind of flipped out on me. "How can you be okay with that?" "Why would he want to leave?" "What are you suppose to do while he is gone?", etc. It was kind of a let down I was expecting support not a lecture, lol! We were once military and then my hubby also traveled with his corporate job for awhile so the seperation will not be completely new to us. We've weighed it out and feel like we're making the right decision. |

(paid almost $60 at PX)Pretty much everything for his bed, he said they suck too. He said they are scratchy. So if you can send him with a good set, do it. I just went and bought hubby some more stuff to send and he could not stress enough that he wanted sheets and a blanket and more thermals. |

My hubby said that the first week he was there, him and the entire group of guys he arrived with were sick. (Due to altitude change, colder weather, it was -5 there yesterday and the sand) So vitamins, headache meds, and maybe even some kind of nasal spray. |

That is the usual response from family and friends. My hubby has been gone for 17 months and his mother still can't beleive that he made the choice to go to Iraq. I told him I would support whatever decision he made because I knew that he would only do what he thought was best for his family. Times are tough here in the US and alot of people have made the decision to work overseas to ensure their family of a better life. We will all support each other on this forum and most find comfort in talking to each other. We are all on the same ship. Good luck and don't listen to the nay sayers. Debbie |

Coni, Its does get better. I know saying that is easier said than done. My hubby went for 2 years before with LSI. We are here doing it again after saying we wouldnt but, jobs have went way south and we saw this as the only option to help us out. Even though I have done it before it doesnt make it any easier. Hubby went on Sunday and I am feeling like I cant do this again. But, I know I can and will it just takes time to get through it. I just get myself involved in hobbies and downloading stuff for my hubby to watch LOL.. All I can say is keep your chin up and please dont think about how many days its been or to go LOL you'll go mad.. Hugs to you |

I actually informed my hubby today that we now have a green kitchen. And wow ...I can't believe how organized everything is around here! Hi, i'm just jumping in on your conversation...my husband went to processing in houston oct 3 and flew out for afghanistan oct 17...the first 3 weeks were really hard...but it is getting better...i still cry ... a lot...my husband and i have never been apart from each other...actually when he left to actually go over was the very first time since we met that we had gone a day without talking to each other. but now since he has been over he calls home everyday and we talk...it helps...we are planning a nice vacation/romantic reunion in london for his r&r. as for everyones reaction to his leaving they all said go!!! it was crazy they were like yeah do it...what's a year? he'll be back, but when he actually got his itenerary they all had a different story...they were like are you sure...are you nuts? what are you thinking? I was like geez people make up your mind are you sad or not! |

Wirenutts wife is correct, Chris says his sleeping bag is ok for now but I would send him another blanket, or an electric one. Go figure, when he was home, he never used his side (we had dual controls). Guess it is a lot colder there than NY. They also have lozenges called cold-ez that you can get in Walgreens, etc. They help to shorten the length of a cold. I just hope he gets his package before he gets a cold! |

Switch I just asked my hubby and he said they just made a new one. Its a decent size one. He said that your hubby should go there when they have deliveries because things get sold fast and they don't get more till the new delivery. There is a new Burger King, Taco bell and Pizza Hut. They have a gym too and the MWR is right near the PX. Everyone is pretty friendlyIts not a bad camp at all its just a smaller one. They have had a lot of improvements in the last year. Unfairly the upgrades were done after my hubby was there. The original PX was a packing container LOL. |

Thats funny about the snow it did only once and it was a dusting. I was so mad because I always want it to snow. As far as cold not to bad down to the 30s and 50s in the day time. It fluctuates but nothing to extreme. Most times it was warmer than it was cold.

I just spoke to my husband (electrician) who has been at Sharana since the 22nd and he said that it hasn't snowed yet, but it's around 33 degrees in the am. He said that during the day it's not so bad. He is already asking for tools. He said they have a Pizza Hut there but it is not up and running. They have to get the electricity going to it first and needless to say it's not priority. He said they are short handed on electricians. He started out at 12/7's and quickly moved into 14/7's. He said the days go by fast, but he is still tired. I to am trying to keep busy. I work at the local schools as a Campus Supervisor which is great because it puts a little cash in my pocket without a lot of hours. Thank you for all your advise, and it's nice to know that we can help each other from such a far distance. Paula |

I always feel bad for my hubby when he calls after work and dinner. He sounds so tired, there is really no time to do anything but work eat and sleep. Ah well its not forever.. |

Morning. I was right, the last piece we were waiting for was in the mail box. Jdsc’s wife, I think I am going to take a cue from you and try to pack a sleeping bag. The lack of and or poor quality of the issued bedding and then the time it can take for them to get to a more permanent camp concerns me. Partner, if you try Kandahar or camp Kandahar at flickr, there are loads of pictures, that might give you an idea. Just keep in mind some of the pictures are older–from the earlier yrs of. |

They give you $500 cash when you leave Houston. When you have 2 timecards filled out, 2 weeks you can take a draw. Every camp is different, some $500 twice a month or some one draw of $1000. You can send it Western Union to arrive home the next day providing they have one on camp. My hubby sent $500 home and they charged him $30. |

I'm trying to fill out the online application for the passport. His recruiter said fill it out and print it off but do not pay for it because KBR will take care of that in Houston. The instruction sheet says fill out the DS-11 form and then hit "Create Form." I don't see that anywhere....it just takes me to the page where you would actually pay for the passport. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? |
