Ko Ko- dont feel bad.. I joined the forum the day after my hubby got the offer... Initially I wanted him to wait after the holidays also but after thinking about it.. Im not sure if I would have wanted him gone all year and still miss next christmas with him.. if we figured it out right he should be home next christmas...

So we also moved it up because Im due in April and if he leaves now he will have his 4 months under his belt and qualify for his R&R right around our baby's birth...

and not to mention he's been off work for almost 2 months..

the waiting goes by fast... he got his itinerary Wednesday and leaves for Houston on Sunday...

Enjoy the time you have... we are all here to support one another..

So, how do your friends and family react to your choice to do this? I told my best friends last night that the hubby was gonna be doing this and they kind of flipped out on me. "How can you be okay with that?" "Why would he want to leave?" "What are you suppose to do while he is gone?", etc.

It was kind of a let down I was expecting support not a lecture, lol! We were once military and then my hubby also traveled with his corporate job for awhile so the seperation will not be completely new to us. We've weighed it out and feel like we're making the right decision.

Q-fever is a flu like system that can get serious, most think its a cold. Houston starts you on an antiotic doxycycline used for
this and maylaria. sometimes you need hospitalized so if they
think this is what he has go to the medic now before it
gets worse. Its a disease I think that is in the air. if
have those blue hospital mask wear them when around people.
There good for the dust in the summer also.

My husband is in Afghanistan and he had to buy sheets, pillow, blankets. (paid almost $60 at PX)Pretty much everything for his bed, he said they suck too. He said they are scratchy. So if you can send him with a good set, do it. I just went and bought hubby some more stuff to send and he could not stress enough that he wanted sheets and a blanket and more thermals.

No problem. Also, make sure that you send him with some medicine for nasal congestion and headaches. My hubby said that the first week he was there, him and the entire group of guys he arrived with were sick. (Due to altitude change, colder weather, it was -5 there yesterday and the sand) So vitamins, headache meds, and maybe even some kind of nasal spray.

That is the usual response from family and friends. My hubby has been gone for 17 months and his mother still can't beleive that he made the choice to go to Iraq. I told him I would support whatever decision he made because I knew that he would only do what he thought was best for his family. Times are tough here in the US and alot of people have made the decision to work overseas to ensure their family of a better life.

We will all support each other on this forum and most find comfort in talking to each other. We are all on the same ship. Good luck and don't listen to the nay sayers.

Hey everybody, new here, can you help me understand a couple things

1) How do you find out what the jobs pay
2) When do you find out what the jobs pay
3) What is the best way to get in contact with a recruiter
4) How long does it take to get promoted withing KBR?

Please only respond if you know the answers to these questions, I see a lot of speculative replies in this forum, and would like to get real answers.

Thanks !

I worked with KBR for 2 years in Iraq, FWIW

(1) You find out the pay of jobs when a recruiter contacts you and tells you
(2) Same as #1
(3) You have to post your resume and info on kbrjobs.com and IF they are interested in your skills, they will contact you. It is very difficult to find a recruiters info UNLESS you have spoken to one already.
(4) Depends on job, location, availability of higher positions, and your competition!

Good luck

Hubby went on Sunday and I am feeling like I cant do this again. But, I know I can and will it just takes time to get through it. I just get myself involved in hobbies and downloading stuff for my hubby to watch LOL.. All I can say is keep your chin up and please dont think about how many days its been or to go LOL you'll go mad.. Hugs to you

No I haven't heard from he said yesterday that it was going to be a bunch of training stuff so I know I won't hear from him till there done. They do run them hard with all the stuff they need to do. What is your hubby going for? Mine is in HVAC he'll be working on tactical vehicles this time. Before he worked on vehicles and buildings then became a foreman. Not sure he will do the foreman thing this time too many politics LOL.
As far as the bird I have a few talking ones and its usually one sided lol. We were in Florida last year on Sanibel Island. I loved it, I would love to move to Floria but hubby says no lol. He doesnt like the humidity ( although its not much different that here LOL).
Does your Hubby know what camp hes going to? Mine is going to Anaconda I know that can change but for now its a good camp. He was at Kirkuk before and its a small small site.
I have a few kids you can come kidnap if your lonely LOL...

since he has been gone i resigned from my job so i could go back to school ... i am changing my career path...and have been keeping myself busy with all my girlfriends (movie nights and such), our little girls of course, and projects around the house. I actually informed my hubby today that we now have a green kitchen. And wow ...I can't believe how organized everything is around here!

Hi, i'm just jumping in on your conversation...my husband went to processing in houston oct 3 and flew out for afghanistan oct 17...the first 3 weeks were really hard...but it is getting better...i still cry ... a lot...my husband and i have never been apart from each other...actually when he left to actually go over was the very first time since we met that we had gone a day without talking to each other. but now since he has been over he calls home everyday and we talk...it helps...we are planning a nice vacation/romantic reunion in london for his r&r.

as for everyones reaction to his leaving they all said go!!! it was crazy they were like yeah do it...what's a year? he'll be back, but when he actually got his itenerary they all had a different story...they were like are you sure...are you nuts? what are you thinking? I was like geez people make up your mind are you sad or not!

Wirenutts wife is correct, Chris says his sleeping bag is ok for now but I would send him another blanket, or an electric one. Go figure, when he was home, he never used his side (we had dual controls). Guess it is a lot colder there than NY. They also have lozenges called cold-ez that you can get in Walgreens, etc. They help to shorten the length of a cold. I just hope he gets his package before he gets a cold!

Switch I just asked my hubby and he said they just made a new one. Its a decent size one. He said that your hubby should go there when they have deliveries because things get sold fast and they don't get more till the new delivery. There is a new Burger King, Taco bell and Pizza Hut. They have a gym too and the MWR is right near the PX. Everyone is pretty friendlyIts not a bad camp at all its just a smaller one. They have had a lot of improvements in the last year. Unfairly the upgrades were done after my hubby was there. The original PX was a packing container LOL.

Thats funny about the snow it did only once and it was a dusting. I was so mad because I always want it to snow. As far as cold not to bad down to the 30s and 50s in the day time. It fluctuates but nothing to extreme. Most times it was warmer than it was cold.
The hooches are ok. He stayed in one that had 2 rooms then a bathroom in the center with like a little porch. It has A/C and heat and are usually either 6 x 8 or 8 x 8 I cant remember. No windows and a door that locks. Some come with little fridges and a microwave if not he can get one from someone. People are always selling stuff or giving it away when leaving. They are very resourceful though they made makeshift grills and all kinds of stuff. They make it as close to home as they can.
My hubby stayed away from trouble makers and there are always some in the bunch. Its nice when they can hang out with a few guys and watch movies or play video games. I download loads of movies and stuff online so hes always set for something to watch. They do have internet there but its usually a guy who buys the system and lets a few pay each month and they get internet. Its not great and most times it doesnt work. Depends on how many are accessing it and so forth.
My hubby had an Iraqi cell phone where he could call me. I will warn you its expensive its like anywhere from 35-52 cent a minute both ways to call. We went through quite a bit of phone cards. You learn to be quick and say your I love yous fast, Of course the time delay is always cute LOL.. Expect a 1-5 second delay sometimes. Some days it was worse than others. But, I was happy and satisfied that I was able to talk to him every single day. Not to mention If I needed something i could call him. Barring he wasnt working.
They have kinda of a rainy period but I cant remember what time of year it is. It makes it tough because they have gravel on sand and it creates flooding. It seems I have run out of space to type LOL. I'll be back later =) Jenny

I just spoke to my husband (electrician) who has been at Sharana since the 22nd and he said that it hasn't snowed yet, but it's around 33 degrees in the am. He said that during the day it's not so bad. He is already asking for tools. He said they have a Pizza Hut there but it is not up and running. They have to get the electricity going to it first and needless to say it's not priority. He said they are short handed on electricians. He started out at 12/7's and quickly moved into 14/7's. He said the days go by fast, but he is still tired. I to am trying to keep busy. I work at the local schools as a Campus Supervisor which is great because it puts a little cash in my pocket without a lot of hours. Thank you for all your advise, and it's nice to know that we can help each other from such a far distance.

I think Sharana is a relatively new camp isnt it ? I keep hearing the name on the forum now but about a month and a half ago nobody had heard of it. Hope they get their pizzahut wired up. Yes those long hours make you tired. I always feel bad for my hubby when he calls after work and dinner. He sounds so tired, there is really no time to do anything but work eat and sleep. Morning. I was right, the last piece we were waiting for was in the mail box. Jdsc’s wife, I think I am going to take a cue from you and try to pack a sleeping bag. The lack of and or poor quality of the issued bedding and then the time it can take for them to get to a more permanent camp concerns me.

Partner, if you try Kandahar or camp Kandahar at flickr, there are loads of pictures, that might give you an idea. Just keep in mind some of the pictures are older–from the earlier yrs of.

They give you $500 cash when you leave Houston. When you have 2 timecards filled out, 2 weeks you can take a draw. Every camp is different, some $500 twice a month or some one draw of $1000. You can send it Western Union to arrive home the next day providing they have one on camp. My hubby sent $500 home and they charged him $30.

John: from reading the forum you get 500 before boarding the plane
then you have to work a couple weeks for a draw. get paid
first friday of month. Might not get check till Mar. Not
to sure but that is what we are planning so he isn't without money.
I think about First week in Feb,you should be able to take a draw
on your first pay. good luck, my husband is leaving for the
fifth also. Our recuiter said about 800 guys and women will
be at processing.

I'm trying to fill out the online application for the passport. His recruiter said fill it out and print it off but do not pay for it because KBR will take care of that in Houston. The instruction sheet says fill out the DS-11 form and then hit "Create Form."

I don't see that anywhere....it just takes me to the page where you would actually pay for the passport. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?
