My husband is there now. He said that it's not so bad during the day and a little cold at night. He was told that last year at this time there was 3 feet of snow. He compares the mornings to Mammoth. When the sun comes up it gets real cold fast because the heat pushes the cold down, but once the sun hits where you're at it warms up. He says in about 3 weeks it should start getting colder. He estimated the mornings to be around 33 degrees. During the day around 62 degrees. Says the monday after Thanksgiving it started to get colder. He was told in about 3 weeks it will start to get colder. I am mailing him more thermals and an electric blanket. He was told it has to have an automatic turn off. Hope this helps and good luck on your adventure. |

He has me looking up Carhartts. He said that most of the guys are wearing those. He mentioned they are quilted on the inside and go down to the hip area. I looked on line and some say "Artic", not sure if that means for extreme weather or not. I was about to e-mail him but he won't be able to answer until he's done with work. Paula |

Hubby says the same, Nothing to watch and nothing to do. He hasn't heard yet when he leaves. I hate the waiting and not knowing anything. He hasn't gotten his CAC card yet so Im assuming hes not leaving soon. He's having a hard time finding time to wash his clothes theres always someone there. I told him I think it was the first time I had ever seem him so eager to do laundry LOL.. |

anzac - I hear ya on that one. I've been getting the "You're crazy" routine since I applied to KBR over a year ago. I'm so excited that it's almost time to go! I'm going in as a truck driver, and the other workers on my last project at Fort Dix told me to pack my armored underwear. That's just the kind of thing my poor wife needs to hear. Ugh! KO from BC - My name is Steve, and I'll be sporting my signature, super short, flat top lol. I'm gonna try to get one last day of surfing in tomorrow, since I was told that I'll be going to Iraq. This will be my first time in any desert, and I'm gonna miss the Atlantic Ocean pretty bad! Anyway, I'm off to bed, if I don't see any of you folks on here between now and Sunday, have a safe flight, and I'll see you all in Houston. |

And to those questions about the carhartt, if you know its gonna get cold you want the arctic quilt lined, for the colder temps. I too go on jan 4th, and am also tall and bald, guess we will all blend in,lol. |

Kevs beloved in Camarillo, California said: Thanks for all the input. All this stuff is new to me. Ahhh 'Winter Sports'... dressing for them is an art form! When I was in the Army we called it "Snivel Gear". Hehe
Unlined verses lined - guess it all depends on what your doing. If moving around a lot you tend work up body heat..... but if you're just standing around or if it's windy you want the thicker lining. I tend to dress in layers so I usually go with the unlined bibs unless it's extremely cold and/ or windy then I break out the Red lined bibs and an extra hoodie. Basically I have Winter clothes and Summer clothes. Winter jeans are a size or two larger to accommodate the sweat pants. And larger sized flannel shirts so you can wear two or three layers under.
Here's a run down of a typical Winter construction worker dress -
I cant stress enough about water proof boots... nothing worse then wet cold feet! Next would be the hands.... soaking wet gloves do no good at all. It's always best to have two or three pairs of gloves, even extra socks in the truck just in case.

|
operator649 in Galesburg, Illinois 42 months ago |
...... then there's the Gortex type clothing... good stuff but can be a bit high priced. I have a ton of Winter gear from over the years of living and working in the midwest. I keep all kinds of extra gear in my truck too, just incase the weather turns for the worse.
Wind shirts, also known as Golf shirts are a plus too! |
|
Kevs beloved in Camarillo, California 42 months ago |
WOW! How can you even move around in all that gear. He just ordered a pair of boots, but it sounds like out first paycheck is going to be clothes. We live in sunny California, didn't require winter clothing. I went to working persons store and they seem to have the best prices unless someone knows of another. I guess the trick is to buy big so that you can layer. Thanks for all the info. |

My husband is also at Kandahar. Are you an electrician? I ordered and shipped to him Carhartts from a company called Gemplers. They will ship to the APO...I ordered the Bib overalls with the zipper legs (so he could leave his boots on) with the red artic lining and hood. I had also bought him the same color coat at Tractor Supply (before I found Gemplers) and I had to ship these. Take Care...Work is hard... Hardy3742 |

Well hubby called at 4am and he has arrived at his final destination Yeah , Its been a long journey. He left Oct 26 for Houston , then 2 Dubai. He spent one week in Baghdad training and nearly a month in Speicher waiting for his final orders. So my famous packages will be sent off tomorrow !! He is at Camp Warrior in Kirkuk and he seems to be excited about it. Said they gave him a nice dry hooch with a mini fridge and what looks to be a nice new cushy mattress. Funny how we appreciate the little things... so i am a happy camper now and can let out a huge sigh knowing that he is safe and gonna stay in one place now. |
