The minute you step foot on the plane, you start getting paid, that is correct. You do not get paid for processing while you are in Houston.

I think that's what happends... at least that's what we are planning on happening.. so we have to make sure we put money away to pay taxes on the portion of the salary that is NOT tax free...

wirenutts wife in California said: Hey everyone, sorry i've been extremely busy these past few days and the drama here has been mounting it seems. Hubby was told that he was paid on Friday but I dont have any money in my account to show that. So between him and I we have been going round and round with payroll. Add to that drama, we were at my sisters house yesterday and her car was broken into. Then when I got home I found out that my neighbor was found not breathing yesterday. They have no clue why!! He is in ICU now and has not regained consiousness. Scary!! So it has been a crazy weekend.
Wirenutts wife:
I am so sorry about your neighbor and your sister's car being broken into! The whole paycheck thing is odd because Chris went wheels up the 24th and he got a paycheck. It's the small things that make you appreciate your spouse, we blew a fuse here last night (wiring is REALLLLLLLY OLD) and so saw some sparks, etc. Well after a go round with the landlord who happens to be my dad, I called my father in law who is an electrician and asked to him to walk me changing the fuse since Chris kept saying turn all the power off before you touch that box. I had the flashlight, my father in law on the phone and my 19 year old on the couch with the 3 cats and the dog, walked down cellar to get to the circuit breaker and a bat flew into the back of my head, LOL, Thank God our neighbor was home and he came over and saved my butt! Boy do I miss hubby! I called my mom and was hysterical and then we had a good laugh, by the time I told hubby what happened when he called this morning, it was funny! So wirenutt's wife, it must be our turn in the bucket. To all with your spouses going or gone, keep on keepin' on, it gtes better lol!

We did not withholding but our yearly wage is less then $87,000.00. Anything over that you will owe income tax. IRS figures wages from date started to 365 days in country.

You can do no taxes and just put up some money to cover the amount over $87,000.00. Not sure of exact amount but a guess is about $1600.00 per month in taxes, could be a little more.

Any health condition that may require medical treatment, only medics on base, many have no hospitals. Things I know they look for are uncontrolled blood pressure, seizure history, diabetics, etc. Hope that give you an idea.

You will need to find a tax person that knows the laws for overseas work. Some will need to file an extension till 365 days occur and some will have to file with income from KBR then file an amended return to get refund of overpayment in taxes after 365 days occur. To complex for me I recommend hiring a professional.

I think that if you are in country by the 15th you should receive a check for 2 weeks, but after that you will probably not get one till the following month with full month and two weeks.

87,500 is tax free providing you stay out of the country
apx. 320 days, you get 10days paid when r&r (straight time)
I think you can take up to 15 but only paid for 10. they give
you 860.00 for airfare but don't get that until you get back.
Also if you decide in 6 months you hate it and come home
you will be taxed for everything you made prior
DONNIE: We expect to be paid a short check in Feb.
Only if you make it out of Houston by 15th. then get full
first week in march. If you don't get anything
by Feb.9th you can get a draw. Hope this helps

kiki78 in Atlanta, Georgia said: Yes Sasha, I am female. As far as the 12 hr 7 day shift goes, it's something you will need to get used to. Me personally, I was pretty tired at the end of the day and went to bed early on most nights, but it does make time go by really fast.I said I wasn't looking forward to Houston because I've been through twice and believe me, it's not fun, with all the paperwork and classes and waiting around and more classes, oh and you can't forget "banana suit training", drink plenty of water on this day, you'll be hot for a while.Where I was at in the Green Zone, we stayed in containers. It all depends on where you go.In the summer time, the temperature is hot as hell, and at night it's still hot as hell,150 degrees plus, but most places have AC so don't worry.I don't remember what the weight limit is, but i'm pretty sure it's 2 40 pound bags and 1 carry on if I remember correcty. It might have changed since last year.I wore mostly jeans and shirts, but you can take khaki's too. it's not required though.I am an Admin Specialist. I worked at the old embassy in Baghdad for for years and just came home in July. I decided I wanted to go back, so I called up my old supervisor and they requested me back.

Hello KiKi, I've applied to a couple of positions as Admin Specialist in October and haven't heard anything from anyone. Just how hard is it to get hired on with KBR or any other contractor to work overseas??? I was drawn to your comments because I'm female as well, and just wanted to know if it was harder for female to get noticed.

Hi Sunshyne,

No I don't think it's harder for a female to get noticed, it depends on your qualifications, and what they're looking for at that time, doesn't matter if your male or female. I think I just got lucky because I worked for the company for 3 years in Baghdad and just went home for a 3 month break and asked to come back. I didn't need to contact a recruiter, i just knew some people over here already. If you send me an email, i'll shoot you the name of my recruiter, she might be able to help you out.kanika.grant@kbr.com.

Debbie-thanks 4 the tax info.. We decided not 2 withold.. we will create a seperate account for the taxes we'll have to pay later..

My hubby finished his 1st day of processing in Houston. He hated it. he said that it seemed like he was already there about a week.

I guess they were given some info about taxes & more paperwork to fill out.
Sandra-my hubby also mentioned about the R&R.10 days but up to 15.. I think the first R&R he will do the 15 because it will be when Im due with our 2nd baby.. then the 2nd R&R we might do out of country. It will be tough to travel with 2 kids for me.. but I guess we'll cross that bridge when we get to it..
Wirenutts- Im sorry that you are going through all that stuff... Was anything take from your sisters car?? several years ago..I had my car broken into but nothing was taken..well nothing of value.. they could have taken a bunch of CD's but instead they took my book bag with all my notes from my credential class... sometimes people just have nothing better to do...I have everything ready for the Candy/treat making day with the kids this weekend.. I hope you guys have a good time here.. Im looking forward to meeting you and the kids..

Kristi- I've heard the connection is slow on their side.. How much does you hubby pay?? and is it worth it??

COni- I told my hubby about traveling man but he's at the Comfort Inn.. I guess they might send them to the Hilton on Wednesday... How long has traveling man been in Houston?? They told my hubby 6-9 days but no more than 12....

He was hoping that it would be just the 6 days.. he says it doesn't seem like there is such an urgency to get the electricians out.. I think he just had a long day.. said it was pretty boring.. he just wants to get on that plane already!
He took an exam..I guess electrical stuff.. and they do medical tomorrow.. they have to be up sooner tomorrow..
Its funny I feel Im interviewing him when I talk to him.. I want to get info for all of you.

haha...yeah when my husband wasat processing i felt like i was interviewing him too! As far as the internet connection goes if i understood him correctly there are different speeds that you can pay for (at his site anyway...site 2 afghanistan...don't know what it is called other than the guys there call it camp cupcake)anyway my husband said that the other guys there told him even if u pay $100 a month for the fastest one you can't really tell a difference. So he pays for one that is like $30 a month and it is alright. It depends on what he is wanting to do....my husband says that is definetly worth it so that he can chat with us on the webcam in the privacy of his own "room". he doesn't have to go the community phones or whatever...and we can email him pictures and everything

Good morning everyone and newbies, wow this site has exploded.

Davsgirl, I am not real computer savvy, but saw an ad for those minis and was wondering if they work well as I plan to send one- a computer- over to dh after he get settled. My hubby is not real comfortable with computers other than surfing ebay , so the girls and I are giving him some lessons while he is here. I know it varies with camps but it is heart warming to hear of some people being able to see loveone via web cam.

Wirenutts wife, I hope you and hubby were able to get your pay issue worked out. Maybe it is just a matter of a mistake on the routing number. I had this happen with my own pay before–payroll department or the bank not sure, and now that I think about it, its usually been in December! It usually got sorted out in a day or two.

Beth, all that plus a BAT to deal with!? Ain’t it the truth? We do appreciate them more when the like happens. And why is it that it never seems to happen until after they are gone. Oh well that which does not kill us makes us stronger–so they say.

Alexi, yeah for you and your hubby. I know what you mean, not exactly show you want to see, but if you have to, might as well get it on the road.

Debbie, could you please clarify for me again. I know we have to send all the originals as far as certificates, and licenses with my hubby to Houston. But should I also send copies of too and after he uses his originals have him send them–the originals back to me in Florida and keep the copies to take over with him. Or will he need to take originals with him? I am just nervous with having him travel over seas with all his important paper work.

I send originals and one copy of everything. I was in Houston weekend before he left and he was through with the processes so I took the originals home and he kept the copies. Switch stated earlier that when her hubby arrived at camp HR asked for all his paperwork as they did not have it. I beleive she had to fax them to them. My hubby said no one has ever asked him for any paperwork, so safe side says send copies with hubby just in case.

Hello JourneeJones-KBR,

I too am in need of a little help, as many people are in these desperate times, but if you could find it your heart to give me a few pointers that would at least give me the opportunity to talk with a recruiter it would much appreciated.

I'm currently a Heavy Equipment Operator with over 12 years of experience running various types of equipment from excavators, back hoes, trenchers, skid steers, asphalt paver's, loaders, dozers, etc, etc, etc.
I've been doing construction for over 20 years so I'm also pretty handy with other aspects of the trade and would even be willing to take on a Laborers position.

I currently have 2 apps in for the position of HEO. I noticed this morning that a position for Labor has been taken off the list, so will apply for the next Labor position today.

I have included my email address in the profile link to the left.

Thank you so much.
Looking forward to your response!
Gary

On the little bit of research I've done over the past month I've found that you don't pay taxes on $85,700. You must be out of the country for 330 days total.... and can holiday in the USA for no longer then 28 days during that time.
Here's a very useful link.....

If he's through with training its a sit and wait game. They have a meeting every night at 5 p.m. to let them know who's leaving the
next day.He actually went thru processing pretty fast. Did they
say where in afgh.? My husband is going to Bagram, but can
be sent anywhere from there. Glad to see you on forum
this is a nice place to talk and connect with wives who are
experiencing the same thing.

Hubby is at Bagram and just to give let you know he said the first influx of troops are in Afghanistan so things are getting pretty crowded. When he tells me what they seem to be in short supply of I can give you a heads up if you want. And it is getting pretty cold.....

Funny to finally be almost through the first month and talking about taxes etc., I didn't think that I would manage those first few days, It is funny that this is the first thing I check in the morning with coffee in hand. Off to walk the dog since he is so MOPEY. Chris called today and talked to him, Diesel just walked around looking for him. Worse than kids I think sometimes!

I know that they receive 500 before they get on their flights. Can someone tell me how they did it? My hubby wants to send money back to me but we are not sure how things will work for him. Can someone tell me if they have been in the same situation and how did they do it? Or if you just know how and when its done then that will help too..
thanks so much in advance. He flies tomorrow so its already going to be stressful enough..
