I am schedule to go to Houston to process on Jan 12th. My question is that my recruiter told me that I am going to a B Site base in Iraq. She also told me that I can't bring any type of iPod or laptops there, is this true? Does anyone have any info on those bases? Is there any information that my recruiter can give me about the base that I will be going to? I've been in the Air Force for the past six years and been to Iraq three times and I never heard of a place that you can't bring any of those personal items, what do they expect you to keep yourself sane!! Any info would greatly help I have to start the paperwork asap.

Brendo2382, first off welcome aboard KBR!

As far as your questions are concerned I am going to do my best to address them as clearly and as best to my ability. Every B-site has set forth a code for contraband items, this is reinforced by the Marines. If you decide to take any of the following listed items (which is not a full list) these items will be confiscated and not returned to you, meaning they will be destroyed:

a. Cameras
b. Cell Phones
c. Blackberry type devices
d. Radio transmitters
e. Personal Data assistants
f. Pagers
g. Any Device with Global Positioning System (GPS) capability
h. Sims Cards
i. GO #1 Violation (Drugs, Alcohol, etc…)
j. Laptops (if one needs to be issued to you, it will be done so one base)
k. I-Pods
l. Any device capable of storing data (i.e., desktop or laptop computers, thumb drives, external hard drives, disks)

If you choose to take any of the above mentioned items and/ or do not surrender them or give them up at the given chance of "amnesty", an incidnet report will be written by secruity for contraband and possible termination from KBR could follow.
There will be many extra activites that will keep you busy overseas. We have area(s) setup for phones, and internet to keep in contact with family, and recreational items as well. You are going to be working ALOT of hours, and I don't forsee you getting bored or worrying about having too much free time. There isn't any.

Do they allow you to buy those types of things there at the BX/PX? As in you can't bring them there but you can buy them once you get in camp?
I worked as a generator mechanic in the Air Force, when I was deployed in Iraq three times we also worked 12 hour shifts six days on and one off, sometimes even working 7 days if things were backed up. Trust me there is going to be times when you get back to your room and want to pop in a DVD to watch, or even go to the gym and workout to your own music. This is a big selling point for me, if I can have anything to allow me to escape the everyday I don't think I can do it. Having those personal thing were the only way that I was able to make life out there bearable when I was deployed.

Just for my info.. what's the reason...?? I mean I know there are obvious reasons..duh.. we are at war.. but can you explain the different types of sites and the reason for more or less security at others..

Again just for my knowledge.. my hubby is at liberty right now..

KBR will deduct medicaid and social security from all Americans paychecks. Withholding taxes are optional. If you are out of the United States for 330 days during any 365 day period you are allowed to receive $85,500.00 that is tax free. If you are making more you will own taxes on the remainder.

We elected not to withhold any taxes as his income is right around that level. I filed our joint return last year without his W-2, as he had not been out of country 330 days at that time. I received our refund and then in July when he had reached his 330 days I filed an amended return with his KBR W-2 and I had to return $500.00 at that time.

The best advice would be to talk to a taxpayer that knows the in's and out's of overseas work and get them to give you the best way for your situation.

Hope this explained a little better bur remember what worked for us may not work for someone else's tax return.

Debbie

Does anyone have info about the B sites? They say it's new to them and there are sending almost all people to these sites, including me. Has anyone else spoke to their recruiter about this? My recruiter told me she didn't know much about what they allow you to have (laptop, iPod,...) but all she knows is that you can't bring it there with you. Can you at lease buy it at the PX/BX if they have one or can you get these things shipped to you from family or amazon.com? If anyone can speak to their recruiter about this it would greatly help me and probably many other new employees that will soon get shipped out to the B sites. Feel free to email me at, brendo2382@yahoo.com.

Thanks!

now based on another 44 hrs/week ie 7/12s==84hrs/week or 336hrs/month
at 14.90/hr = 5006.66 x
5% uplift
35%uplift
35% uplift or 75% total
=3754+5006=8760/month

The formula goes as follows:

2583.00 X 12 = $30996.00 divided by 2080 hrs. = $14.90 per hour

14.90 X 40 hrs = $596.00
75% uplifts X $596.00 = $447.60
14.90 X 48 hrs = $715.20

Weekly salary is $596.00 + $447.60 + $715.20 = $1758.80

4 week monthly gross is $7035.20
5 week monthly gross is $8794.00

minus cash draws, social security taxes, medicaid taxes, and health insurance.

You will also have deductions for any plane tickets for R&R, you will be re-imbursed the following month after R&R for $860.00 airfare.

I say we have a KBR Forum getaway for all wives and girlfriends and kids in Myrtle Beach !!!!!!! ~ Debs~

I just have two questions, do I have to bring the dog? :) And can we come tonight, we are going to get another 7-12 inches of snow here! I hope you are all well, and Debs it does get better. We officially passed our 1 month apart yesterday, and only 103 more days to go until I see him! They say that the first 21 days of a change is the hardest, since this is a family forum I am not going to comment except for the fact that my quitting smoking day is Jan 1st and I think that will be easier!
Perhaps I am sad because he was homesick today and we all have our days, and I didn't want to be sad for him so I was Mrs Suzie Sunshine! But for all of you, Debbie, Switch, JDC, Koko , Sandra, Coni, Kev's Beloved, Alexi, Kristi, Cathey and for anyone whom I may have forgotten, thank you for the posts. Even when they aren't for me I read them because I am feeling all sad and sorry for myself and manage to gain strength. You guys are awesome!

Have a great evening!

TO all of you: I think a get together would be great. I figured
if rick gets to Houston and everything checks out he should leave
I think by the 15th of jan. So his R&R would be around the end of
May or first part of June so girls any time in may would
be fine with me.
I am the same way BETH, I read everyones forum just to get knowledge
and insight on how my days will be.
I think it is great that a recuiter is on here also, He can help
answer some our questions. Thank you Journee!!

Kerry, don't worry my hubby said that the urine test was very hard that it would bring up anything that may be a problem for him even a UTI..and for the dog try letting him (your Hubby) talk to him on the phone the next time he calls. Maybe he or she just needs to here his voice to LOL. I had did that with my two furry kids and they seemed to do a littel better but now every time the phone rings they think its for them. LOL..I agree I think that this forum is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Good luck to all of you and as far as the getaway I'm in too just tell me when.
Good night ladies & friends

I know when we first got a new phone package this way I could have keep my northern state number, so I do think that T mobile is one that will allow other state numbers–at least in some states. My dad called last night from Dubai. Should be in Bagdad by now. He was so tired and with the time changes he could not tell me what day it was. But he sounded in good spirits and eager to get to work. My husband is in Houston now. He is worried that he will be stuck in the hotel for Christmas and New Years because they are saying they are having problems getting flights out. Not good. Anyone else heard about this from Hubbys that arrived in Houston on the 14th? My hubby is in good spirits but nights are hard. That is when he gets home sick so I do my best to reaasure him. This forum is the best thing sliced bread! Thanks to everyone. You really bring the spirits up!

He's mailing me back his cell phone and other stuff he didn't need.. (paperwork)... I guess they are waiting for guys to get there from Houston to begin their training.. Im glad he has had the opportunity to rest before he gets the ball rolling....

hi Coni, another one mentioned was Sprint–both Debbie and Switch have mentioned. So I am going to check into both Global and Sprint. I think Switch mentioned something about 750 minutes for about 27.00 for Sprint and can be reloaded. I am checking into Global too, but will likely go with Sprint since have used them before, just been a while.

Koko Wilson in Florida said: hi Coni, another one mentioned was Sprint–both Debbie and Switch have mentioned. So I am going to check into both Global and Sprint. I think Switch mentioned something about 750 minutes for about 27.00 for Sprint and can be reloaded. I am checking into Global too, but will likely go with Sprint since have used them before, just been a while.

Sorry.. the calling card wasnt "Global".. its called "World Wide Extra" ist just that it has a picture of a globe on the front.. those are the calling cards we're using.. so far so good..
