Hi everyone, Haven't been on much lately because of working long hours but does anyone else have a spouse at Bagram? Apparently there was an earthquake on Kabul, which isn't to far from Bagram. I won't hear from hubby until the morning so just wondered if anyone else had heard anything?

Sara Conner in Austin, Texas said: Thanks for our level headed response. I got an email yesterday. He's in Irag but didn't say which camp. Apparently no phone card yet (big mistake), but he said he was going to buy one asap. I know those stateside can relate to the worry of delayed communications but they say patience is a virtue. I'll work on that. I'm going to sign out of forum for a while- too much miscellaneous info received/not relatd. Thanks again-Sara nobelcom.com is a great place on line to get a phone card. We use it here in Kandahar and it's alot cheaper then the PX. They give you your access number and pin via email so no card to keep up with. You can get 2200 minutes for $20. |

switch in Austin, Texas said: Actually its $87,500 taxfree as long as you stay out of the country 330 days. Journeyman wages are roughly $10,600 per month. Then you have your deductions. Family medical insurance is $500, or for just him its $165. They will take out Fica and Social Security which is about $800. Thanks Switch. My husband and I have enjoyed "getting to know you" on this forum. I am not sure how each of you came to your decision to let your hubbies go. This process has been very hard. Just when we think he is going I start having second thoughts. His recruiter told him today that KBR needed 1000 Electricians and they have just about filled all the slots. So if he wants one he'd better decide fast. Anyone know if this is true or just a way to get him to sign up? |

Its funny you should say that because my hubby told me back in November that he had heard at Speicher they were hiring 1000 electricians and they already had 700+. My hubby had 2 friends over here that wanted to go over and he told me to tell them hurry up. They are actually processing next week !!

switch in Austin, Texas said: You are just so sweet and kind. How is hubby today ? By the way i was meaning to ask is it a boy or girl or are you waiting for a surprise ? Hi there.. we are going to wait and find out what we are having... We waited with Jazmin and it was pretty cool that way!.. Our Dr. kept telling us that she was going to be a boy because of the heartbeat.. we always had to remind her not to hint at what she thought it would be.. we just want a healthy baby.. We will be naming the baby Jesse like my hubby.. so either way, boy or girl, I think it would be cool to have a girl named Jesse.. |

LYTE_281 in PORTER, Texas said: remember ms shocker we here in the u.s are in a recession. think about all the people that are losing jobs. ! Yeah.. I would suggest that you guys decide.. I think we are lucky that our husbands are electricians and there is such a demand for them right now.. My husband was an electrician in the Navy and when he got out in 2001, that's all he's been doing and it was great until Dec 2007..we live in Southern California and he had to take a job up with the Union in Las Vegas because this came to a halt here.. Not just for his Union in OC but in the Inland Empire too.. so he was up there til October -He would come home for the weekends and I would drive up there every once in a while I would tell report sick to work and request a sub.. so I we could spend time with him.. then things started to slow down up there too and he came home and actively looked for a job for an entire month.. NO JOKE!! Everyday he was calling somewhere.. he interviewed with several companies that could not offer much.. then he posted his resume on careerbuilder and got a call the next day... Of course we would all want our hubby's home.. I have a 2 yr old and Im 6 months pregnant.. and my hubby may or may not be here for the birth.. after alot of praying and talking and crying we decided to do this... at first the only support we had was this forum.. our family thought we were crazy ..they are coming around now.. but you will not find a better group of people here on the Forum.. there are some of us that cannot go more than 8hrs without reading or posting... we keep eachother afloat..!! I would say, if your family needs the money(whose doesn't?) and your hubby's willing to do it and you feel strong enough, Go for it!! We'll be here for eachother!! Sorry its so long- we all on the same boat! |

The phone on the camps are not payphone. Only payphone would be used when they travel home on R&R. Sounds like a good deal. Debbie |

Hello everyone. I have a question for anyone familiar with KBR policy in Iraq. My husband called me today and when I asked him about what he had for dinner he said he was at the mercy of the forman to get from his CHU to the jobsite and back and did not get to the DFAC because of this. I do not think this is right. Does anyone know anything? |

Hey whatever makes the time pass faster. |

If they work days they are required to have breakfast before their shift starts. Lunch would be taken during work hours for 30 minutes, and supper would be taken after the shift ends, on their time. Camps all vary on how this all happens. Some will have to walk, some provide vechicle to get back and forth. If he is not getting time for lunch then he should say something to his department head and maybe they can work out something. Hope this helps. Debbie |

I thought they work staright 7 days until there r and r after 120 days. Is nice if they get days off but I imagine that differs by job and by camp. |

Debbie that helps a lot. My hubby is going to call me again tonight before he gets up to go to work. I am just hoping he can hold on. He is so used to working with his hands and being constantly busy that another prob for him is that his jobs is just to push some buttons and write some numbers down. He was down on the phone but still said that after 120 days he was going to put in for a transfer for another job on the base if one was open. We will see. Hoping he can hang on and I think he will. I think he was just super tired after 14 hours of pushing buttons. Apparently his job site is quite the hike from his CHU and that is why he has to wait for a ride. If he walked it would take him about 30 minutes if not longer. I will know more when I talk to him tonight and keep you updates. Thanks for the info. You are def the Mom of the forum adn I know we all love you for that! |

Thanks guys. Reading your posts has really given us a lot of the info we will need to make this decision. Having this forum has helped us feel like we have people in our corner. We have not been able to tell anyone because we know our families will definitely not approve. I can hear it now. "You are willing to send your husband to a war zone just to make money. No money is worth having the boys separated from their Dad for a year and possibly a lifetime. I'd rather live in a card board box that take this chance." We have 2 litttle boys that would miss their Dad immensely so that is what is holding me back. My husband has a job but he has gone from working 65-70 hours a week which was necessary to make our bills to now only working 40-45. My fear is that things will get worse before they get better. My husband, Chris, is supposed to call his recruiter tomorrow morning to finalize the process so my goal is to have a decision by the end of day today. Wish us luck. It is going to be a tough day. |

You go to the passport processing center the morning of the day of physicals and then you get your physical. The passports are issued the day you get your CAC but you sing the passport book I believe the Thursday of the first week in Houston. At least that was the case with my husband. |
