I have been contacted by a recruiter from a small company (I've checked their web page, looks formal). She just gave me a brief telephone interview and afterwards faxed me a few forms which I would need to sign and fax back including providing my SSN for a background check.

Just wondering if it is normal to give out a SSN at such an early stage, no real interview has been scheduled yet!

I know it's the buyer's market right now. Should I just take the chance to give them my SSN number?
