Do you work at Level 3 Communications? How did you find the job? How did you get that first interview? Any advice for someone trying to get in? |

I worked for Level 3 up until two years ago--had been there 6 years before leaving for a position at another company. At that time it was a bit dicey to work there as you never knew when another layoff would occur. That was one reason I left, the other being I had the opportunity to get more experience elsewhere. Recently, I was rehired at Level 3. I mistakenly thought the job I was offered would provide another great opportunity at a company that had become more stable--boy was I wrong! The hiring manager is a newby who was supposedly "lured" from another large company where he spent many years. He has done nothing but give me a bad time from the get-go. His expectations are that his team, work 10-12 hour days Monday-Friday, with no breaks or lunch breaks. After all, the more work they produce, the better he looks to his boss, our VP. In addition, he offered no support or guidance nor made any attempt at outlining his job expectations. I have only been back at Level 3 one month now, and have been "talked to" 3-4 times already about my unwillingness to work ridiculously long hours on a regular basis (I do work long days, but apparently not enough to satisfy him), and have also been told what a "disappointment" I am. I have now been placed on "Performance Review," i.e. I was hauled into HR and proceedings that will no doubt lead up to my being fired have been implemented. Managers and co-workers from my previous years at Level 3 are totally shocked at my treatment, but no one more so than I. I wish I had never returned to this company, and know that I will soon be listed among the ranks of the unemployed. Would I recommend working here? Only if you have personal knowledge of, and/or several positive recommendations from the people who work for the hiring manager. If you don't have prior knowledge of the person, I would steer clear of the place. They are obviously hiring new managers who don't care about their employees' success. |

I have no idea why this shows me in Salem, Oregon. I'm in Broomfield, Colorado! |

The company has a churn and burn reputation in Denver. They seem to bring in a lot of consultants and spend a lot of time distinguishing their backside from their elbows. I also heard that they would rather hire externally than promote from within. |

Puzzled in Broomfield, Colorado said: I submitted my resume through their website for some Would like to reiterate this same frustration. I see regular postings for jobs that look just like my resume but I've never received any sort of interest - I've stopped sending resumes to them. |

I worked for L3 for 2 years before getting canned for reporting improper hiring practices by new management to HR. FYI, HR is not an employee's advocate. But I still L3 is a great company and they pay better than most. Right now they are restructuring at the Atlanta site and some are being let go and then having to re-apply & interview for their old positions. It's BS, but what can you do? A word to the wise, stay away from telco companies. |

I submitted my resume online for a very specific advertised position and was contacted by an HR specialist. He set up an interview with a department manager that I thought went well. When I returned home, I found an auto-generated message in my Inbox that my resume could not be matched with any availabe positions. Huh?!? Was the position filled that quickly?? |

If you really want to work for Level 3 Communications I advise moving to India and applying to WIPRO or Infosys. WIPRO and Infosys are both hiring for current Level 3 positions held by employees in the United States. Level 3 employees are getting RIFs or Reduction In Force letters.

How do you know that they are getting RIF letters? And for what particular reason? I have a possible job interview coming up with them and this would be helpful to know. |

Level 3 fired over 2000 people as they reduced the workforce after buying 6 companies in the last 2 years. Level 3 was working to integrate the networks from the different companies but ran out of money. The integration of the networks has stopped. The executives and managers that made the decisions to buy the 6 companies have been forced out of Level 3.
Level 3 also stated they can't afford to upgrade equipment they have that is 'End of Life cycle'. They stated they can't afford to upgrade the Juniper M160s because of lack of money. Juniper isn't going to support them with patches and IOS upgrades. Also no more vendor support. Also Level 3 has been gradually giving the tasks done by IT to other departments. As the other departments have begun to take over the work IT used to do the IT department is being disbanded and the workers let go. The customer support of the customers is being outsourced to foriegn companies. WIPRO and INFOSYS are 2 companies taking over customer support positions. Of course some departments may be hiring at the moment while others are being laid off. That is for the moment. Who knows about tomorrow! |

Also make sure you get all promises in writing and signed by HR and management.

Does anyone know if Level 3 has a hiring freeze? With its stock dangerously low (near being de-listed on NASDAQ) and debit very high ($6.4 billion) with debt payments coming due now I'd think that they are pulling back hard on expenses. |

Seems to me that the positions advertised with Level 3 are a wash and strictly advertised for protocol. I stopped applying to this company. |

Me too, applying for this company has become a waste of my time and after reading some of these messages, especially from Colorado, I don't think I want to pursue a career at Level 3 any longer. I began thinking that Level 3 might be a bad place to work when I kept seeing so many job openings on the net; this tells me "high turner-over" and that means bad management. Sorry you all had to go through all that, but thanks for the heads up. |
