Hi everyone! Hopefully some of you have stories to share :) I have done my phone interview and in person interviews, and yesterday was contacted by HR to start background check process. From reading other posts here, I see 2 common experiences: 1) this means I am being considered for the job, and 2) the LM background check can be a long process.

What was your experience with the LM background check? How long did it take? Did you pass? Any glitches along the way? If you did not pass, what reason did they give?

This has been such a long drawn out hiring process... I'm worried about passing on other offers and the this falling through.

Thanks in advance for any responses!

I received and email from an HR rep saying they received the info I submitted for the background check, and that the check would take approx 7-10 business days. I know I don't have anything negative like bad credit or anything criminal. It just worries me having the fate of this job in the hands of some outside agency, you know? I've read some horror stories about them causing people to lose out on jobs by reporting false info or marking things as a discrepancy without contacting the applicant for clarification.

How long have you been waiting?

I can't speak specifically about LM's hiring process but I can say that going forward you need to save all your paystubs, W2's and Employee of the Month awards.

My sister once had to "prove" that she worked for a bank that went belly up. If hadn't had all her paystubs for the last 10 years, they probably wouldn't have hired her.

Waiting a week but just received an email saying they did not receive the copy of the release of authorization I faxed to them. I also understand your fears as I also have the same fears.

I'm really counting on this job and have started the whole application process with Liberty about a month ago.

I want to wish you luck and please post as soon as you hear anything and I will do the same. :)

Bluetea in Texas, saving all those documentation is not something I have done in the past but in the "new" job seeking world I will always save everything.

Wow, that's crazy. I'm glad it worked out for your sister! I have w2's, but only back to 2005 due to older paperwork getting lost in a move. Hopefully I won't run in to that issue. Thanks for the heads up :)

Companies are so fussy nowadays. They are asking for old supervisor names, email addresses, your salary history and on and on.

Save everything you can especially names and payroll stubs. A lifetime will fit in a shoebox but I have mine in a safe deposit box.

Liberty Mutual uses a company called Lexis/Nexis to do there background checks. This is the same company they use internally when a policy holder calls in to file an automotive or home claim. Lexis/Nexis does take 2-3 weeks to conduct a background check on a potential employee. The background checks usually consist of a candidates credit score, which the company uses that determine a candidates worthiness based upon the job applied for. The company sometimes verifies college degrees if the job your applying for pays over $50k a year. If the job you apply for is under $50k a year or a frontline CSR job, they typically don't verify your college education and will take you at your word for it.
When you go in for an interview, be prepared to answer behavioral type of interview questions. Like for example they may ask, "Tell me a time when you had a confrontation with an employee in a former job" What the interviewer is looking for in an answer is something like: At XYZ company, I had this confrontation, this is why we had this confrontation, this is how I handled it, and this is how the former employee and I dealt with this xyz issue moving forward. The company is looking for ways to deal with employees through teamwork.

The company is looking for ways to deal with employees through teamwork. When you fill out an online application and have a supplemental questionnaire, the company is testing your ability to tell the truth. They will have multiple questions in one section than two sections later will ask you the same questions in a different format using different verbiage. They are looking to see if you give the same answer in section 3 or 4 that you gave in section 1. This is how they know if your telling the truth is by this type of questioning. Liberty Mutual is a performance based type of company. They use proven workflows to determine your performance and your performance is based upon many levels, with the first level starting out with your team manager. Other levels used to gage your performance are through customer feedback.

When you become a permanent employee of Liberty Mutual, you get company benefits from day one. The company doesn't negotiate your pay, your manager will tell you what your pay will be upon hire. LM employees typically get a 3-5% a year pay raise based upon metric performance which is measured at many levels throughout the company including your manager, co-workers and customer satisfaction surveys, Quality Assurance and other variables. If your still applying or waiting on a hiring decision, DO NOT go in and apply for other positions within the company on the website. If the company sees too many of the same person applying for multiple jobs, they will discard you as a candidate. Lexis/Nexis there background check company typically only checks your employment listed on your resume and only goes back one or two employers during the background check. Good luck if your going through the interview process or waiting on a background check. Just hang in there.

Thanks Mark Gerard, great info! One question: is Lexis Nexis connected with First Advantage? When I had to fax the authorization forms for my background check, they were for a company called First Advantage.

ChicagoGirl in Elgin, Illinois said: Thanks Mark Gerard, great info! One question: is Lexis Nexis connected with First Advantage? When I had to fax the authorization forms for my background check, they were for a company called First Advantage.

It may be. Lexis/Nexis is a vendor group of contractors that L/M can use for a premium monthly fee. They have contractors that can be hired through them to do pre-employment background checks, insurance fraud checks for the companies insured to see if an insurance claim may be potentially fraudulent, they are a legal resource for the company. The company uses Lexis/Nexis for many things.

LM evolves just as any business does. If you get hired with the company, mind your p's and q's,make sure you listen and do exactly what your boss tells you to do, don't go over your bosses head to your bosses boss, etc. I have seen people fired for doing that and when the company terminates your employment if your a full-time employee, what I have heard and seen happen is that they will come into your cubical with boxes, box everything up and have it professionally delivered to your house. They will do this while they bring you into a meeting and tell you that your services with the company are no longer needed. This is I have heard how they fire people, they tell them exactly that and don't say anything else and than grab your employee badge, escort you out and have your stuff professionally delivered to your house. If you want to keep your job, you basically kiss up to your manager at LM. Thank goodness I have never experienced this myself. Its a good company with good benefits, but they are a couple levels below my Element. Good luck if your trying to get into the co, but there are better ones out there.

Good luck to you too! Have you tried emailing your recruiter to check your status? That's what I did, and an hour later got the email that they needed the additional documents. I don't know if that was just a coincidence or if emailing her prompted it.

I will be at the Warrenville location in Underwriting. Good luck with your 2nd interview! As you can see from previous posts, getting hired at LM can be a long process. I can say that the recruiters HR reps I worked with we're helpful and responsive when I had questions along the way. Keep us posted :)

Do not let yourself become discouraged because of the long process, it is worth it. I went onto the Liberty Mutual site before my interview and learned all I could about the company before the interviews. In addition review in your own mind your experiences and situations you have come across during your previous employment as they do ask several questions that are, give me an example? What did you do? How did it turn out?

I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers that you have a good outcome with the company. Please keep us updated. :)

Update - The first day was filled with information. The company also provided lunch and we jumped right into the overview of all we will need to know to pass the license test. I would highly recommend this company. The people were all friendly and willing to answer any questions.

Ready to leave for my second day on the job. Good luck everyone!!

please let me know how it goes and enjoy your weekend.

I'm also curious with your respond, I got an offer and they stated the BG check will take 7-10 business days and today is the 10th day and I haven't heard anything. I haven't given my current employer a notice yet since I didn't want to jump the gun. LM gave me my start date already pending BG check clearance. I know my BG check will be fine but I do have issues with my credit report. My position is Underwriting, it's not like it's a Financial position. I'm just anxious. I emailed the Recruiter and she said they are still waiting to receive the clearance. IDK... It's driving me nuts...

Well I just received confirmation of my start date. They finally cleared my BG check. So in my case, the credit report did not matter. Boy I can really say this was a long process and I hope it will be well worth it. My firt phone interview was January 8th and received my offer on February 10th, and in between that I had two interviews. And today I finally received confirmation. Good Luck to all... BTW my position is underwriting.

Hello everyone! I had a successful phone interview and my face to face interview is this week. Does anyone have any insight on this? Also, do they check credit for employment? I don't have good credit, so I am nervous about that. Anything else during the background process I should be fine on.

I had a 2 hour long interview today. It went well and the manager was extremely nice! He told me the next steps would be another in person interview with the area manager and he said I should know soon. Well I got home and he called me to schedule my second interview for this Monday! I am so excited! I just still have the concerns I mentioned earlier in this thread.

Yes, they verify everything they are going to ask to list your last 5 years of jobs once you have been offered the job. They really do a credit check ...but they are looking for major things like bankruptcy, repossession , and stuff like that
