I can only give you my experience in Colorado I would say that LM probably has some good people somewhere? Stay away from their IT! It scares me to death to think that a DOD contractor has hard drives laying around desks and important data is not even wiped properly off of disk arrays. Their data centers a joke in Colorado a huge mess with amateurs just getting things done no documentation bad place.. ohh and one of the storage managers leaves every friday to go fishing at 2pm. So you can kinda get an idea of what its like.

It was good fun though! I realized I never would work for them in a full time position that why contracting to hire is best so you can try the company out if you don't like them you just leave simple and say "Im done with you" my favorite quote.

Good luck maybe someone has a better view of LM

Heck give it a try if they offer you a job.. If you don't like it just say "I'm done with you" ;)

Just as a heads up to anyone and everyone thinking that working for a big company such as AT&T or Lockheed Martin, Sun Micro systems (I have worked for all of them) or whoever is cool. Realize one thing when a company gets that large departments begin to become islands with bad wiring between the other Islands.. If I had my choice I would love to work in a small company any day over a large one.. Do not let the name and so called prestige sway you.. Its not prestigiuos to work at these huge companies they have not idea who is who and most of the time who does what.

hehe

Exactly that is the attitude one must have. YOu could find the perfect environment and have a boss that is a back stabbing jack ass that talks about white Elephants in the corner <---- Gosh I love using that "you never know what your gonna get"
I was so fed up with the simple mindedness of it all and yes I agree with others age discrimination
does exist and its a reality. When I was in charge of hiring for my dept in a large publicly traded company I cant tell you how hard it was for me to hire someone that was not between 20-35 for IT. I had to fight for many people because they were the better candidate. Ok enough of my ranting I'm on a roll.. Ive been a bad boy! hehe

Can anybody help me get my foot in door at Lockheed Martin? I have B.S with a 3.64 G.P.A along with a Public Trust security clearance and previously I had a Secret clearance from the military. I am a very hard worker and would love to work for a company that would utilize my skills. Any suggestions or help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I work at the LM facility in Littleton, CO as a contractor for Boeing/ULA and I must say this surprises me. Maybe what you see is true for the LM employee IT team but not for us contractors. We have very tight standards because of the security issues involved. We do not leave anything lying around and everything is locked up tight, and nobody leaves early. We have--at least for the Boeing side, a quality team of people that work hard to do a good job. The only BS that I see is that political crap that goes on between CSC-LM and DELL-Boeing for the ULA contract.

Start contacting LHM through specialty job sites (e.g. military.com, clearancejobs.com, etc.) and at job fairs that they attend. Talk to the recruiters, find out what you can do to better increase your odds of getting an interview and eventually getting hired.

Oh my gosh what a terrible place to work! There are a bunch of losers that work here. I can't believe the government contracts with them! The guy who is across from me sleeps with his head down at his desk for at least an hour or more a day along with the 30 minutes he gets for lunch. Sometimes he take an hour for lunch -eating at his desk surfing the net then sleeps. I watched this happen almost on a daily bases. There is no time clock or way to monitor people coming or going. Other people make lots of errors yet are still employed there. People dress like hookers. I have seen many people with their butt cracks hanging out.

I am not sure what kind of people (ie engineers?) work at your current location but at the facility I worked we had (mainly) engineers and the environment was a casual but very busy one. Rarely did I ever see people not working and committed to what they were doing. And the dress code, jeans or dockers and a nice shirt. Everyone was professional to say the least. Lockheed/Boeing was one of the best places I've worked and I made a lot of friends.

Lockheed is famous for hiring family members. I would love to get back in where I was but all of the people I know are in low places.

The people you speak of must have previously been working at the drivers license building.

I have been with Lockheed for about a year now. This is a great place to work. I applied for the job only once and had a single interview about 2 weeks later. I waited about 4 weeks before hearing back about the job. The trick with Lockheed is the same as with the government, tailor your resume to the specific job posting including all of the keywords. Just don't rely on one standard resume. If you are looking for an engineering job look at Lockheed in Huntsville AL. The LM Space Systems company is needing at least 40 engineers ASAP. Look on www.indeed.com for Lockheed jobs.

What I don't understand is why they advertise they will sponsor visa workers and not at least talk to me since I am a born and raised american white male.

What's going on?!

Lockheed probably hired 5 folks with visas in the 9 years I've been with them. If you are not able to get a govt clearance your chances with LM are slim to none. Foriegners are not able to get govt clearances.

As far as outsourcing, go to google an type in insourcing and see what you get. Defense contractors can't outsource much of anything.

All I know is I am qualified and I have the right college degree. There is no reason not to at least interview me. I know electronics and I can obtain a security clearance.

Your proplem may be the resume format or the content. Government and government contractors like detail and key words included in the resume. Look at the job announcemnt that you are applying for and tailor your resume to that job. Make the resume chronological and put as much detail as you can into every job in your history.
Put your contact info at the top followed by your job history then education and any other information pertinent. Refrain for including personal info on family.
Limit the resume to no more than 2 pages.

I no longer work there. But when I did it seemed that there was a lot of who you know in the company. Job reqs can be posted and then internal people apply for them, say me as a contractor, and then the req suddenly dissapears or gets put on hold or they already found someone to fill the position. A lot of politics to me. The were on a big hiring spree a year ago for entry level engineers and that's it. I work in IT and even as a contractor they wouldn't look at me and I worked around a lot of people there. Maybe it's whose ass you kiss the most? I am still trying to get into United Launch Alliance and I keep getting rejected for those positions. I had a Raytheon recruiter, someone that works as an engineer in the company tell me that I have everything Raytheon is looking for yet they always turn me down for jobs. Go figure. He even went so far to say that he saw one guy recently that applied and was turned down 6 times before they hired him. I've been interviewed twice in three months and turned down so many times I could wrap the world with them.

I worked for LMMS at SWFLANT and was studying for my masters. One day, my boss called me to his office and said it didn't look good for me to study at my desk because people might get the wrong idea. I was so mad that while he was talking I was making notes about one guy (his buddy) who made 90K and took several smoke breaks a day. When he was finished berating me, I told him that what looked bad was for a manager to waste 17K per year outside smoking, increasing our benefit premiums etc.... I was livid!

Needless to say, I was never promoted after that!

Host said: Do you work at Lockheed Martin? How did you find the job? How did you get that first interview?

Any advice for someone trying to get in?

Hello,

To answer your questions:

1. Yes i work at LM
2. My resume was posted on Career Builder and an LM Recruiter called me
3. Advice is to be persistent, tailor your resume to highlight the strengths that correlate to the position you are applying for. Have a good cover letter.

Apply for only positions you have experiences and qualify for

Good luck!!!!

There is some untruth to the whole its who you know scenario, i can say this because i didnt know anyone there and i was hired. First of all Lockheed receives thousands of resumes each week, so in order to get noticed your resume needs to be unique and stand out. You need to have the experience and or education that correlates to the position(s) you are applying for. Having good cover letters and resumes are one thing but how you dress for an interview, how you answer questions, if you follow up after the interview with a thank you note, litle things like that gets noticed.

Hope this helps

Good luck!

I am reading these comments and sad to say i find them quite disturbing. I am an educated person that served my country and was hired by LM even though i am not related to or knew anyone that worked there. What you all are saying is diminishing the qualifications, education and experience of us that work hard and were persistence enough to get hired by Lockheed. In my case however, Lockheed called me I didnt even apply they didnt know if I was male or female black or white. My belief and again this is just my belief is that education, experience, qualifications, interview etc contribute a great deal to getting a hired at Lockheed. Defense companies are competitive in nature because of the type of business so they like competitive individuals that can work in team environments. If you are persistent enough you can get in but keep in mind there are thousands trying each week so you have to follow up and dont just sit back and expect the recruiters to come to you.

People please try to be civil and not name call. If you disagree with someone then try to be the better person. You could have transferred to another dept or business unit or contact the Ethics dept and file a complaint either by name or anonymously.

Please note i am not taking sides but there are two sides to every story and there is only your side posted here, so to be fair only suggestions are offered.

I too worked for Lockheed/Boeing in Denver but I found the people to be good people. LM gets a lot of resumes. They like people with security clearances and military folk. I got lucky in that I got in through a recruiter as a contractor and then sometime down the road I was hired perm to United Launch Alliance which is now having serious financial woes. ULA is a good company but it too suffers like other companies with people that can easily be your worst enemy. Life goes on-find another place to work, be happy, and make a genuine contribution to the world.

What surprises me though is the "lack" of professionalism in some of the comments in that people are called out by their names (which shouldn't be done in the first place-show a little class) and yet you hide behind a screen name.

That amazes me.

Thank you for your positive comments and I totally agree with you. No company is perfect but every contribution counts even the smallest ones, what you put in is what you get out essentially and what i am seeing here truly surprises me given the current state of the economy. One would think that the current state of the economy would be a motivation to be a better contributor and try to help better the situation not add to the frustration and make the working environment worse so again thank you for your positive contribution to our company it is much appreciated.

Benefits to working at a DoD contractor:
Money-not so much(industry wages, dependent on your skill set, experience, yada, yada)
Benefits-very nice and cheap (July 2010 I paid $145 month for a family) optical and dental were free. Extremely hard to find.
3 weeks paid vacation to start
Immediate 401K investing, rare in today's world.
9/80 work schedule
Profit sharing bonus at years end.
Week of paid holiday starting at Christmas and running to New Years day.
No time clock except for manufacturing.
Very laid back environment

Not so great aspects:
Nepotism
A majority of the workforce is older. They need young blood with new ideas.
Hard to get into.
Contract company so if it loses a contract you might lose your job. And with respect to this it is very hard to lose a job.
It's hard to compete against ex-military or those with security clearances-they will have first shot, noifsandsorbuts.

I'm sorry I'm quite new to the job search world right now and I was wondering what some good things to say to a recruiter would be? Should I discuss my excitement about the position or am I more trying to sell my skills and abilities that would be useful a that particular position?
