Hi, I submitted an online job app. for a new Lowes opening in my area. I received word and went in and I filled out a Reid questionnaire, the one about honesty and drug use, and then spoke to a person who only asked me about 12 work experience questions. I received word today that at this time I'm not being considered. I have 18+ yrs of experience in residential construction as carpenter and handyman/maintenance type work. I've never used drugs of any kind and consider myself to very honest. I find it surprising that I did not make it to the next stage of the hiring process. Any ideas? Reid report; what are they looking for in your answers? I was totally honest and supposedly honesty is the best policy. Confused...

I havent been at Lowe's for a few years so I'm not up on their current HR practices. However, I am familar with the REID survey from years ago.

Unless you answer the questions like you would be willing to have your mother arressted for stealing a pencil and you have absolutely never taken an unprescribed drug, you would fail. At least that is they way it worked back in the 80's.

In otherwords if you admitted to even the slightest theft (less than $5.00) you failed. Also the questions were worded in a confusing manner.

We would actually give applicants "tips" on how to take the Reid survey, because of it's nature of disqualifying otherwise decent people.

That is all I know. On other forums, I am reading that Lowe's has just insituted a hiring freeze. Your rejection may have more to do with that than the Reid Survey.

Thanks guys, It's a new store opening so they're hiring. I said I would rat on a family member but question as posed isn't black and white. Stealing is stealing so I said yes, fire for all amounts also. I've never used any drugs ever and never stolen from an employer or store. I'm currently working for myself, 7 yrs and haven't stolen from myself...lol. I don't get it? If someone is more qualified to work at lowe's then me, wow.

That is why I hated the REID survey. Honest people were sometimes gauged "too honest, so they must be lying". Personally I think it sucks. Some people who passed it still ended being up fired for stealing. So why use it?

Yeah, that was my gut feeling about being too honest. As I was taking it I thought that also. I worked for a local Lloyd's Lumber years ago and they had a guy come in and basically give us an oral Reid test. When it came to drug use I said no, never and he kept pushing it and pushing it. He's like you've never even tried it...etc. He was basically implying I was lying to him. The thing I don't like is that some of the questions aren't really black and white. If I could talk to someone that would be better then just a computer reading the filled in dots. Oh well...as it's said, their loss...not to be conceited but was hoping for this job because I really could use the change. Thanks for your replies. Take care, Bill-

The Reid report is to see how honest you are. If you noticed they asked several of the same questions many times, however they reworded them. It's also a form of an intelligence test from what I'm told. If you pay attention to the questions you'll catch the rephrasing.

i.e.: If you know someone is using marijuana would you report them. (Here is where you will say yes even if you wouldn't)

Later in the test they ask...If you have a family member using drugs would you turn them in. (Again here you say yes even if you wouldn't).

You are never submitted to a lie detector test, at least not in Virginia, in most places it can be considered illegal.

I just had the same experience with Kent, a building materials company in Atlantic Canada. I have had a responsible job with the Canadian Government for 35 years and have a Top Secret security clearance so someone thinks I'm fairly honest and reliable. I have no idea why I was rejected due to my survey answers and there is no appeal process. My attitude is this - it's their lose. I will now apply with one of their competitors. My greatest fear is they they may use the same approach. Does anyone know where one can get some insight into how to answer the questionnaire. Clearly honesty is not the best policy in such cases as these.

I applied for six different seasonal jobs in the Schererville Indiana store.
I got an e-mail back saying I'm not being considered. I'm sure it was not for lack of skill or ability so I went back to the store and saw the human resources lady and asked why I was not being considered. The reply was "it is our policy not to tell applicants why they were not being considered" My advise.. don't apply there
and don't shop there. Go to ACE hardware.
