Avoid the Direct Hire Consultant position. This is not a 40 hour a week position. In fact you will need to work at least 60 hours per week to make it. Making it requires making a benchmark of 100 phone calls per day (1000 calls per month), typically necessary to achieve the 15 connects per day. This position also requires a person that does not mind making tons of "cold calls" pestering every business and it's employees in the town you work and beyond. The Direct Hire Consultant can be best described as a "sales" position and not a recruitment position! Imagine all this for a low base salary and stinky commission. Don't walk away from this opportunity, run! |

I'm a DHC, and would hae to say that I whole-heartedly disagree. Granted, this is not a 9-5 job. I work very hard for my candidates and clients as well, but regarding your comments on the commission, I'm very happy with it. I can tell you that I will make over $50K this year - and there is potential for so much more. You just have to be comfortable talking to people. I wouldn't consider that "stinky". It seems to me that you're just not the type of person that they are looking for for this position... which is why you ran. |

I'm looking at taking a position with Manpower as a Full Desk Recruiter/Sales temp and perm hiring in there office downtown for Professional Services, IT related. Is your position similar and what can you tell me about the environment there. |

I did not run, I simply relocated to California because I accepted an offer as a corporate recruiter and am earning a salary for my efforts. I work hard, but my time is worth more than a "stinky" base and and unpredictable commission. I simply could not afford 50K per year; hats off to you. By the way, I did not calculate the number of required calls per month; the number of calls required per day to achieve 15 connects is 100. This means a DHC must place 2000 calls per month for success. Whew! Good Luck to you! |

Gypsum, I think your math is flawed. I am a recruiter and you are on the phone a ton, but I also came from a true sales position(finance cold calling remember the movie Wall Street). If you didn't make 100 calls a day you where gone, and about 1 in 20 bought. The number of contacts I make a day is 25 to 30 which takes 50-75 dials. This is not a big deal if you know how to manage time and have a good work ethic. Glad to hear you are earning your salary, because without corporate recruiters like you I would not earn my commissions :) |

Gypsum, I completely agree with you. The DHC position is not worth the time and effort. And Smack back, I have no idea of what type of territory your in but generating 25 to 30 contacts from 50-75 dials sound COMPLETELY unrealistic. I am one who knows how to get past the gatekeepers and still this wouldn't never happened where I was. I think it really depends on the territory. |

The key to having a good contact ratio is the research you do before you make the call. Gatekeepers rarely hold me up, and if they do I get to know them and next thing you know I am talking with the person I was calling. Territory has nothing to do with it, know your market and be professional. The numbers I am referenceing are tracked over 6 month time frame. Everyday does not produce same results, but the numbers are accurate. If you truely want to succeed work hard and smart, it may take more than 40 hours a week. |
