Any advice for someone trying to get in?
I recently got interviewed at New Service LLC for a Software Developer position. I was given a task over the phone to complete a web application to showcase my skills and ability to learn. I completed that task and exceeded the standards given to me. I was then scheduled for an interview. When I came to the interview I did not exactly know what type of worker they were looking for. It was either, part time, full time, contract, or an internship. I met with the owner and all seemed to go well except he wanted to hire me unpaid. I explained to him that this was not possible as I was out on my own and simply could not afford it. He explained to me that in that case he would be flexible and allow it, and that we will discuss the details of my pay over email. He also said I would be starting the following Monday. So I emailed him to discuss how I had given my 2 weeks for my job and was ready to start Monday. Although he stated he would be open to paying me, I instead received an email where I would have to work two 40 hour weeks unpaid, and that from there he may or may not pay me depending on how quickly I pick up everything. I explained to him again I could not afford it, and insisted on pay of atleast minimum wage. Instead I got no reply and I had to retract my two weeks notice from my other job. I recently found out most of the "employees" at New Service LLC are unpaid interns for at minimum 3 months if not longer. They also work roughly full time unpaid, NOT LEARNING but WORKING. If i had demonstrated my skills correctly and be doing a job that most people in the real world get paid between 20 and 30 an hour to start, I should atleast be given minimum wage. According to federal law this is illegal: www.nytimes.com/2010/04/03/business/03intern.html?pagewanted=all
