What are the average starting salaries, bonuses, benefits and travel requirements like at Nielsen Media Research?

What do you like best about working at Nielsen Media Research? Are there any great perks or special treats for employees?

28,000 year/ company car and laptop / for FR or MR positions / If you like 60 hours a week and no thanks in return for your hard work.....if you like their horrible health benefits... and the constant threat of being fired unless you produce more with continual threatening emails..... then GO FOR IT

I recently applied as a MR. You say that the health benefits are bad? Can you elaborate?

Would you say that 60 hours a week is common?

Also, do they have just one MR for a single market? How does that work? And why would they expect you to live in a different market from the one you would primarily be working in?

50 to 60 hours or more is very common with FRs .. especially with the AP equipment mess.... The equipment is very hard to hide and doesnt work well at all. 1 MR that I know of works over 40 hours but is told not to report it..... The health benefits stink because of the high amount you have to pay and high co-pays on top of that... For a family an employee can expect to pay $500-600 monthly. $30 co-pays and you have to mail away for any consistent meds.. big pain

What kind of qualifications are they looking for in a new MR?

I found the job posting to be very open and kind of vague in what they are looking for. I am just out of college and, although my background isn't specifically in communications, I am very familiar with Nielsen and the way the ratings system works. I also have a background in sales. I am very interested in the position but worried that I haven't heard from Nielsen yet.

Run to the hills.. They are totally unprofessional. My manager told our whole group to break the rules. Same manager held a home in the sample after the customer died. Clearly against the rules. The rep tried to report this and was fired 2 weeks later. They used other reasons that were totally untrue!! I know all companies play these games, but they do it regularly. I you last long enough YOU WILL BE FIRED.

How long did you work there? How long would you say the average MR works at Nielsen?

All of this information (such as starting salary) depends on the area of the country you live in or will be working in.

You get a company car, laptop, benefits. To survive in this company, dont plan on ever being home (except Sundays to prepare for the next work week)

Your numbers have to be excellent which means 60+ hour work weeks or they will threaten to let you go. Performance reviews below 1% unless you are married to your job and never home.

They dont pay their field reps enough to support their families (IMO)

Medical Insurance premiums for High Coverage is $300 a month for a family (pretty decent insurance)
$18 / month for vision (family)
$26/month for dental (family)

My husband worked for Nielsen for 9-1/2 years in the Houston market and my brother worked for them for 15 years. Somebody at Nielsen's top spot needs to get a hold of the management in Houston and make some serious changes. It is all about the numbers, not about the person. Hurricane Ike, wow, your numbers are bad, you are now on PIP, we don't care if we just had a major hurricane, you need to get your numbers up!!!! Then they fire you when you have the highest numbers because you wrote an e-mail answering a stupid question that you manager asked you! Well don't ask the stupid question if you don't want the truth! They can't handle the truth at this company! The truth is they don't know how to run an office and handle people, they only know the numbers! I am glad he is gone and if I could have gotten him to save all the nasty e-mails they wrote him over the years then I would have a grounds to hire a lawyer and sue! Hours are awful at this company, they work you like a dog and for little pay! Only worth it for the benefits because the cost of health care if out of control. Private insurance is extremely expensive and COBRA was totally out of reach, in fact, COBRA cost almost what you clear in a month! Wow, also some of the management in Houston makes sure they spend Nielsen's expense money at beer and strip joints! Nielsen always make an impression when they have a company party somewhere in Houston. Last time that I attended one of their celebrations their management people got extremely drunk and put so many people in the eleveator that they got it stuck and the hotel had to call the fire department to get them out! Great impression!
