i am a conductor for the last 3 years. i grossed $38,000 for 2008. i do have to pay union dues which is about $140 a month also pay for health insurance $170 a month. has good benefits. right now i am laid off due to the automotive business. railroad has not told when i will get to come back to work. usually your travel away from home less than 48 hours on a single trip. sometimes longer but i would say my average time away from home was about 34 hours. |

I am in the Management Trainee program and I am making $54,000 a year starting off and I am eligible for a 5% bonus, when I mark up I will probabally be a little over 60k with a 10% bonus option, we get FRA (Federal Railroad Retirement) Company Pension that is only for officers, and of cours 401K. |

T-snizzle, very accurate. I was a MT before and an assistant trainmaster before quitting. If you don't mind working 60-70 hours a week then you are good to go. And if you don't mind having off one day a week (that being a tuesday or wednesday). I enjoyed the people I worked with and the industry, but the quality of life drove me away. Good luck! |
